I am curious if any member has successfully developed shot loads using vintage components. IE powder, nitro card, fiber cushion wads, shot charge, overshot card and crimp. I am not looking for high performance or productivity. Just want to play around in my cave and use time, maybe even go the route of black powder and brass cases(already load for a couple of cartridge Sharps and a Ruger old Army)
I digress, the focus of this query would be the loading of traditional components into modern plastic(of which I have in abundance) and smokeless powders and a fold crimp. I ask this question as it is becoming difficult to procure some of my favored modern wad columns.
Is it possible to develop a load using a known powder to propel a calculated total weight of ejecta(powder, wads and shot) Or am I venturing into dangerous ground.
thank you

I reload 12 gauge brass with 11 gauge fiber and cards using Herco with 00, 000, and No. 4 buck.
10 gauge overshot cards.
Grocery sack strips for shot collars that also help to keep the patterns tighter.

I also put the above load components into AA's and Nitro hulls (wads and cards are 12 gauge though)
with 1 1/8 oz. payloads.
Blue Dot for the heavier buck load weights.

I would not call card and fiber wads vintage, but rather load specific.
In my case, they are the ticket for consistent patterns.
I tried cut off petal plastic wads, but was never satisfied with either the patterns
or the POI shifts.

My old 16 ga grouse load used vintage components as that's what I got a bunch of when I bought the setup for loading it. I had a large quantity of Remington paper hulls, and the cards, fiber fillers, 57 primers and roll crimper to go with it. Worked very well on birds with 1 oz of #6 over Herco until I ran out of 57 primers and switched to modern components.

They still work well, you just might have to adjust your choke selection depending on your use. They tend to throw slightly more open patterns than modern plastic columns. I don't think fold crimping is a good option for card/fiber columns. They require significant compression to perform at optimum from my understanding.

Vintage and antique are qualitative words that don’t mean much. In my State one can get antique plates for any car that’s only 25 years old.

So to some I not only use vintage components but antique ones too.

possibly I misstated I was referring to components available to the reloader, before the advent of one piece plastic wads.
BTW i have been a classic for 45 years.
thanks much

Here again, in the vein of the current discussion. I have no access to pressure testing apparatus, What are the indicators of pressure to the intrepid experimenter, difficult extraction, flattened primers, etc.
I realize my question flies in the face of existing mandates of adhering to published data.
I just have the time and resources to venture on seldom trod paths.
Again thank you for your time

to not belabor an expired equine. I happened upon BPI's website, it appears that under normal conditions they have everything i would need. But I saw many out of stock notices. Apparently there are shotshell reloaders out there that have bogarted all the booty. I ask now, where would I go to procure the requisite wad punchs and wad stock? Your assistance is appreciated.
thank you
I shall search the web

once again I am here. Having done a search for resources, I have found almost everything I will need thegunworks.com, trackofthewolf.com, logcabinonline.com and precisionreloading.com
I will update as my adventure continues.
Thank you
