I had some walnut lying around and an N-frame with Pachmayr grips, so nature took it's course...

The grips are fitted to my largish hands, and my trigger falls on the trigger perfectly when I grip the gun. The grips are hand-sanded to 3000-grit then finished with five coats of lacquer.

The gun is a 1950 Target Model .44 Special.

Very nice! Did you stabilize the wood before you made them? I have some koa I have had for years I would like to make into some grips but not sure if I have to stabilize it first or not.
Nope- no need to stabilize it. It's lacquered inside and out, so it's sealed well. I don't imagine your Koa needs to be stabilized either.

There's no kill like overkill!
Spoken like a true responsible hunter. ;)

I'm like you and need a grip that fits a larger hand. Unlike you, I'm pretty good with metal but wood befuddles me. :( My problem's not finger length it's palm width. I really like the Hogue coke-bottle grips.

I was shooting an HSc on Friday and the mag kept dropping out of battery because my pinky and ring fingers were curled up under the grip and was hitting the release on recoil. Mag safety kept kicking in. Kind of a pain.
