Glasses... who knew?

Picked up my first pair of prescription glasses in over a decade today. Stopped at the range on the way home. Taurus 415 .41 Magnum, 7 yards, 1 shot per second.

It's almost like... like being able to see the sights and targets helps. Weird.

Great shooting!

 Actually, I'm just an optician, but thanks for the Dr's degree!

And yes, all Walmart associates are nuts in one way or another. It's a requirement for the job. ;)

Nice to see another firearm enthusiast optician!

Great group & great grips.

Or it just rubs off by contact?

I don’t see why you need an obstetrician to be able to shoot.
That's the straight line for some jape about putting a 9x19 through a .30mauser chamber isn't it?

have some shooting glasses with a +1.25 diopter correction in the upper portion of the lens instead of the lower as with conventional bifocals. They let me have the front sight in focus without having to crane my neck backwards to focus out the bottom of my regular specs.
I do something similar, except I get safety glasses that have +1.00 diopter correction in the whole lens, not just part. Then no matter which was my head is tilted, the front sight is in focus.

I used to do the same, but it drove me nuts not being able to focus on anything beyond 1 meter. It made finding my brass difficult and seeing hits on target impossible.

Michael,
I have the same gun and have stayed with the original (butt ugly) gripper grips to help tame the recoil of my hottest loads. I would be open to try some different grips if I could find some that will fit this model Taurus. Where did those grips come from? I am almost sure they are custom made, and though they are not what I would buy, they are good looking grips. Here's mine with the ugly but very functional grips. I also noticed the front sight has been modified. Did you do that yourself?

I started wearing progressive lenses when I hit 45 yrs old. I'm now 52, and learned the hard way just how much the way the various lens configurations affect things.

I had gone to a local optometrist and with my excellent vision insurance, got a pair of glasses with poly lenses, fashionable frames, all the coatings, etc. for $330. Ouch.

About a year ago, I was ready for new glasses since the old one's frame was damaged from sweat and looking haggard. A couple of people had told me how great Costco glasses were, and were super cheap, and they worked with my company's insurance. So I went there.

I got the same progressive poly lenses, all the coatings, plus a pair of cool prescription sunglasses, for $250.

But, the way they configured the progressive lens and what percentage of the lens was what strength, really messed up things. Sights were now blurry, working on things on my bench required taking off my glasses and holding the items up to my face. The glasses didn't fit right and kept slipping off my nose as soon as I started sweating. The lenses were hard to get smudges off of and scratched easily. Now, a year later, all of my pistol groups are awful, and the glasses look like garbage.

I'll be going back to my original optometrist.

Sounds like being a programmer.

Nice shootin' Mike! Still love them grips! ;)

Glasses I got. Still can't see the front sight, rear sight and target all at the same time. But at least I'm legal to drive, again. :D mostly  Doc' says I'm far sighted and got something called 'stigmatism or something such. Plus I got some floaters and flashers from having my bell rung too many times in my misguided youth. As long as I don't concentrate too hard on one spot too long, they don't bother me. I can see the target real good and one of the sights, mostly, but not all three. It's okay, I point-shoot Minute of Pig good enough just from decades of doing it to put sausage in the freezer. ;)

And you weren't even in a rush to get them done in an hour like I was at that famous optical chain I worked at. ;)

As a witness to the effectiveness of poly lenses protecting the eye, I will admit to a foible I committed a couple days ago. I was installing a buffer & spring in an AR and my fingers slipped, shooting the buffer up, it hitting the upper nasal area of my right lens. It left scratches on the lens, but that's a whole lot better than it could have been.

No wonder you're wearing that bandana, Tinker. I don't think it was a shotgun blast, though.....:p ;)
My optician is a gun guy. He gives me a discount for buying poly lens bifocals. My wife gets the krystal vision progressive light changing whistle blowing speaks three languages trifocal lenses. Mine are $99 with new frames; hers are $500 plus the frames and she likes the pretty ones, not the el cheapo ones. Needless to say, when he sees us walk in, he call his travel agent to arrange for a nice vacation in Maui. :(

Can someone explain why small pieces of plastic, eyeglass frames, cost hundreds of dollars?

Nice shooting!
BTW as part of out patient cataract surgery i had both eyes rebuilt (new cornea, lenses ect,).. and can for first time in my life see clearly and brilliantly to and beyond the 1000yd targets. As to cost of glasses does just pair of 1 Dollar reading glasses kinda give you a clue?

I don't typically post targets on here because theyre always messed up. All my handguns have the sights drifted for me to shoot 2" left at 15 yards. Then, on days I'm wearing a contact lense for an astigmatism my POI is 4" right...which is only 2" right of center.
I could forego the correction and only wear a contact when I'm shooting something scoped. Glasses woulda been easier but they didn't work. Both pairs they prescribed had me high stepping with my right foot and dragging my left. That much trouble walking was enough to discourage handling firearms with them on.

Back when i needed glasses i always went to big box stores like costco. About 5 years ago the fitting and quality slipped dramatically. The service slipped as well. I think the contract opticians aren't making as much as they used to after Costco charges rent and fees. With so many getting surgery bet the numbers have dropped as well. Still remember first time i put on glasses (Gemco circa 1962 - Thought wow i can see both sights!!)

Nicely done!

I went the tri-focal seamless progressive route with some of mine, best shooting glasses I own. :)

The upper part of the lens is set for distance, the center for about 24”-30” from my beak (right about the front sight distance), the lower is set for in close/readers.

Keep it up, I think you’re on to something .

Stay safe.

Wait, guns have front sites?

It's that small fuzzy blob you see thru the rear sight looking at the large fuzzy thing you are shooting at.....;)

I had a pair of glasses made that makes the sights be in focus, great for standing and shooting targets on the square range, didn't work out so well when I tried to shoot a practice stage. Having everything but the sights be very blurry was no fun when trying to move and shoot. Next time my insurance will buy a a pair I am going to try right eye sights, left eye distance and see if my brain (what's left of it) can put things together.

A few years back I had glasses done like that. It took several months to get used to them and for a couple of years I thought they were wonderful but for some reason, after about 2 years, the started to drive me crazy. It may just have been that my prescription needed an update but I didn't want to try that concept with new glasses for fear of wasting the money if that wasn't the issue.

I can only assume you bought those grips before the new glasses!:p

Yes, I modified the front sight myself. The grips were a Christmas gift a couple of years back. Purchased on eBay, I believe they were made in Thailand. They are for a K-frame S&W, and required significant modification to work on this gun!
