Opportunity knocks….Should I? Would you?

I don't own an AR rifle but if I was going to get one that is the caliber I would buy. Great hog rifle. The only reason to buy a new rifle is because you want it. Good luck.

Shows what I know. I didn’t even know Nosler made ML bullets. Shame they don’t make them in .452. My 450 might really like them. But I’m also sitting on 650 300gr Speer Deep Curls that I still need to load and test (adulting sucks).

I’ve got plenty of bullets in .458 (350gr Hornady RN) that have never failed me for my 45-70. Do the Noslers stay together pretty well? I haven’t been able to recover one of mine to find out. But I know they make big holes in big pigs.

$80 for a set of dies. That’s ridiculous.
At the 1900ish i was running them they blew impressive exit wounds, but nothing i hit stopped them.
The 350 Hornady are also a really good option, i kinda skipped thst weight but my buddy has a 458 and likes those.

I think I have around $700 in my upper w/scope, this is pre freak out prices!

Try finding anything in stock right now for a .458 Socom thanks to the panickers.

That's a turnkey rifle, everything you need and with all the extras, should keep you going for awhile. So if you like it and can knock a few bucks off the price, I say go for it.

I've got no use for that caliber so I'd pass. But that's just me, it's a nice looking gun and probably a good value with all the extras plus the ammo.

For the price I would pass, but I similarly pass on basically all upper echelon guns. For the money I could have a S&W 686-0 in good shape along with a S&W 27 or 29 in good shape. I could have 2 Witness pistols in basically any of the top tier packages. I would say no, but then again if I were really looking for a hard hitting semiauto then it would be a consideration. 450Bushmaster seems a more popular option for big bores but realistically for their purpose they are almost interchangeable.

On the other hand, it’s a very solid and well built gun. If there ever does end up being any kind of ban then you would have a top tier gun at a reasonable price. If you would use it and enjoy it until that point then it makes sense. I always kick myself years into owning a gun because 5000 rounds later you could have had XYZ and it be a nicer or more durable gun for a bit more. Compare that gun to a lesser but similar setup and I think it will be the same thing, and still if a time to sell comes along you should get what you have unit back out of it, or at least close to it.

Hummm, so your "buddy" at the pawn shop is going to knock off $218 from a 2016 list price? I regard Wilson Combat as top tier and love mine. Most pawn shops offer about 40-to-60% of the value which he might have $1500-to$-1800 in it....that's being generous. Used glass won't add much. Think I'd pass, if there's an "opportunity".....it appears to be in the pawn shops favor.

Sounds like this is the guys personal rifle....here's what a naked rifle of similar spec, but minus all the stuff that makes this one cool, sold for.

Its also combining with something like 300 dollars in ammo, a scope that's going used for 330ish, case is probably another 100-150used, 60 bucks in mags, 50 dollar mount....

Again I'm playing devils advocate here. I KNOW (or at least I'm pretty sure) I could put together an 80% as good rifle for 20% of the cost.......but it wouldn't have the pedigree, look as nice, or be worth as much in the long run.

@LoonWulf and you are both correct. It is a personal that was taken in on trade and he subsequently purchased it for $200 over trade in. They gave $1800 for it I believe in trade. But it was a bare gun with no ammo, scope, mount, or case. He’s had the gun about a year.

The scope is technically used but has a forever warranty so that doesn’t really matter. I was at his house 2 weeks ago and it doesn’t have a single scratch on it. If something were to happen to it, I have 2 Nikons and 3 Burris’s I could put on it. I could also just take the scope back to him and he hands me a new one. That’s how they handle warranty with Vortex. In the 5 years he’s worked at the pawnshop, he’s only had one vortex come back. He would be charging me exactly what he paid for everything.

I realize you don’t know him. I called him a buddy. That wasn’t accurate. He is one of my best friends and I have bought several rifles from him. Some examples:

M70 Extreme Weather 338WM in like new condition for $650, a nice sporterized Krag for $250, a Sporterized 1903 with an omg great trigger for $250, original T/C Hawken (not a kit gun) in great shape for $190, a Kimber Montana 260 with Leupold VxIII like new for $550, and a 1975 Ruger Carbine 44 mag in used but pretty good shape for $400.

Now I feel bad for calling him a buddy.

uhh.....whats his number I can always use a "buddy" like that....wait no I don't, cant afford the ones I have.....

You do what you want… I wouldn’t buy it for any amount of money because I have literally zero use for the caliber.

I guess its worth it if you like it. If it were offered to me, the first question I would ask myself it what would I use it for. I have plenty of AR's, and no real use for that caliber that can't be handled with the other calibers I have (308, x39, 300 blk, 6.5 CM, 243, 223, 30-40, 30-06, etc.) Heck, I shoot hogs with 223 most of the time, and deer with everything on that list, depending on what mood I'm in. In the end, it depends on you, I guess.

I'd buy it. The ammo alone is worth a pretty penny.

I reload for 45/70 and 458 Lott, so bullets wouldn't be an issue.

I'm not fond of the color... but... given the about 1.1K worth of accessories... the price isn't that bad.

Well there’s a new twist to this. Talked to him yesterday. I tried to get him into reloading for the last couple years but for some reason he was hesitant even when he had a guy give him basically an entire reloading setup. Well the rifle deal, unbeknownst to me, also includes a full Hornady I believe, reloading setup (that I don’t need) 458 and a couple other die sets, 3lbs H-110, 2lbs of H-4895, 300 CCI LPMP, and 700 LPP, and various bullets though I’m not sure what they are. I’d ask him about everything in it, but he and his wife just had their second child a few hours ago.

That's a really nice package deal though. Gotta love a nice package deal. If he would go $2500 I'd probably do it. I do that sometimes, if it's not an immediate need, not something you were specifically looking for that just found you, I put some arbitrary threshold on the terms in which I can move forward, if that makes sense.

In this case I'd say, "if he will take $2500 for it I'll buy it, if not I wont". He may decline and look for another buyer, if he cannot find one he will go to a gunshop where they are likely to offer much, much less and then he may be back to you. Either way, if you end up with it. AWESOME!

If not, did you really "need" it anyway?

Congrats to him! Take them a nice baby gift and while your there pick up your new toys:p

Congrats to him and the wife for the new baby.

I'm all over the pace in this question and really not qualified to answer... but since you asked...:).... and keep in mind that I'm a pretty practical guy but admit I've spent my fair share on things that I just wanted. There is something to be said about the satisfaction of owning what you want even if it isn't practical in the traditional sense.

I wouldn't buy as it doesn't appeal to me and I could find a ton of other things to spend thatuch money on. If I did buy it, id sell it for profit judging by what some others have said the value is.

Having said aaaalllll that......

Given, 1) what some others have said regarding better than good value, 2) it seems you do want it, I think you said 3) a good friend and 4) just had a baby (as opposed to an acquaintance type friend or coworker) ..... if all 4 of those thing are true, Id say pay the $2800 as I couldn't, in good conscious, talk down the price.

In fact, if all 4 were true and I had the disposable cash, I'd probably give him $3000 and tell him congrats on the new baby... and ask him, in a smart-a** way, why he didn't learn his lesson after having the 1st kid. :D

But that's how me and my really good friends role. We do things like borrow not cheap tools, dont break them, and then maybe buy lunch when retuning tool,,, just because.

If the conditions are right, buy it and have fun.

All 4 are absolutely true. And now that I know the reloading setup is included, I think I can sell the press, scales, etc to help negate some of the cost since I already reload. But definitely keep the powder and dies. And while he doesn’t actually need the money because he has 3 jobs (full time firefighter, PT pawnshop, and PT EMT), I know it certainly can’t hurt. So I’m going to do it. I wanted honest answers and you guys didn’t disappoint.

It will be a little while before I get the gun. They’re still in the hospital because she had to have a C-section. Baby was 3 weeks early and weighed 9.8lbs. But I will send the well wishes and congratulations from THR. And I’ll post pics when I pick it up.
