It's settled... Lever Actions must have side-gate loading port.

Just to quibble a bit, it is usually the magazine follower slamming the column of cartridges in the magazine backwards that tends to telescope bullets into the case, not recoil. Every time a round is stripped out of the magazine the magazine spring shoves the follower back pretty violently, then all the cartridges come to a dead stop. That is usually what telescopes bullets into cases, not recoil.

It's probably a combination of the two, but I don't discount the recoil effect.

:neener:

Lever actions have side-gate loading ports! You may disagree, it is a free country, but you can still be wrong in a free country.

I agree 150%!!!! The thing I hate about my wife's golden boy is the tube loading! Side gate loading ports are the best!

I hate having to run the ammo through the chamber to unload lever-actions . . .

I can't speak to all lever guns, but you can unload a centerfire Marlin without chambering any of the cartridges.

Open the lever to allow a cartridge to advance onto the carrier from the magazine. With the lever still open, roll the rifle on its right side to let the loose cartridge fall out of the receiver.

Once the receiver is empty, close the lever then open the lever again to allow another cartridge onto the carrier and allow that cartridge to fall out of the receiver. Repeat until the magazine is empty.

This is one good thing of the modernized version of many lever-actions that have some extra hammer block or firing pin block safety integrated into them. You can engage this safety and can cycle the rounds through the chamber with significantly increased confidence you will not have a negligent discharge. I move my hand and grasp the lever with all four fingers to ensure that my trigger finger does not wander into the trigger guard while unloading too.

I have to agree that a single shot is not a "leveraction rifle". The levergun is a purely American invention and we can't have the British Farquarson falling under that heading for God's sake.

By your definition would this gun below be a lever-action, revolver, both, neither?

The very first Colt Paterson guns were not handguns but ringlever revolving rifles and shotguns. So that's not at all a new concept.
