It's probably a combination of the two, but I don't discount the recoil effect.

I can't speak to all lever guns, but you can unload a centerfire Marlin without chambering any of the cartridges.
Open the lever to allow a cartridge to advance onto the carrier from the magazine. With the lever still open, roll the rifle on its right side to let the loose cartridge fall out of the receiver.
Once the receiver is empty, close the lever then open the lever again to allow another cartridge onto the carrier and allow that cartridge to fall out of the receiver. Repeat until the magazine is empty.

This is one good thing of the modernized version of many lever-actions that have some extra hammer block or firing pin block safety integrated into them. You can engage this safety and can cycle the rounds through the chamber with significantly increased confidence you will not have a negligent discharge. I move my hand and grasp the lever with all four fingers to ensure that my trigger finger does not wander into the trigger guard while unloading too.

The model 95 Winchester was a pretty good design. It has neither a gate nor a tube. Of course not many people have ever experienced one.

I have to agree that a single shot is not a "leveraction rifle". The levergun is a purely American invention and we can't have the British Farquarson falling under that heading for God's sake.
The very first Colt Paterson guns were not handguns but ringlever revolving rifles and shotguns. So that's not at all a new concept.
