I can't seem to help it. There's always another one that looks like the coolest knife ever. In this case it's a faithful reproduction of a true icon. Ka Bar Becker - Kephart. There's an old thread in here about the knife and it tipped me over the edge.

And sometimes it's another one to replace that one you used to carry a lot and somewhere along the way it went missing. In this case it's that old black USA made Buck Stockman.

And once in a while it's just that you want another jigged amber bone Case with the old CV blades. Never owned a copperhead before, but that's soon to change.

And then there's the SAK that's been out of stock like forever that has all the tools you want and none that you don't and includes the tool you've never had but always wanted - mini screwdriver that stores in the corkscrew. Voila, here comes the SAK Compact!

It's a sickness I tell ya. But one I enjoy. Danged old SMKW catalog anyway....

The internet has made that slope so steep and slippery that anytime I get near the edge I find myself falling into a new knife.
You paid retail for that Ka Bar. THAT is what convinced me.

I'm doubly blessed when it comes to knives.

Firstly - because when I like one..... I REALLY like it!. No half-steps, no waffling.... I'm all in. Never a regret or afterthought.

Secondly - I have to REALLY like a knife for it to catch my eye (a rare thing) so I am impervious to dragging everything even remotely interesting home with me. They have to pass in front of me - I never seek them out. Much like firearms for me.

As with so many things in life, I find the enjoyment of particularly pleasing items diluted when I allow something in that does not actually *speak* to me.

Todd.

Welllll, the KaBar is not quite a 100% faithful reproduction. The only one doing one of those is Mike McCarter. Too many little details for a manufacturer to do a true reproduction. I have two of Mike's. One 1095 and maple with all the little details and the real treat from period steel and antique furniture walnut that could have been made at the time. I'd call the KaBar a 95% reproduction.

I've had the Kephart in my cart while shopping online before, but just didn't pull the trigger. Probably the only thing holding me back is that I have a BK16 that I've done a little custom work on that I still think I'd like better. I removed the coating to get down to bare steel and added a little patina to it. I also replaced the grips and found a better leather sheath.

But one day I may get one just for the historical perspective.

There is something about the classic blade shapes, especially the spear and harpoon, that really draws my attention. I did pick up the Esee Nessmuk, Becker harpoon and BK16 for that reason, and have a few Ontario Old Hickory knives that I may customize a bit. Those old timers used what they could find, but put their own touches on them that still make sense today.

There's a Lionsteel war horse on it's way. All the way from Italy. Cool looking folding knife that appears to be very well made with quality materials. Ebony scales, a unique to me mix of traditional and modern.

I like knives, but I like simple and cheap stuff thankfully. The blades that get me are hatchets, especially belt sheathed hatchets. I remember both my grandfathers and all of my great uncles carrying those on their belts at one time or another, and always while fishing or hunting. Most were CaseXX or copies thereof, and none of them are cheap. The one I have done the most with is a sig fast hawk and I would hardly call it a working blade. It’s more of a toy to look at. One of these days I’m going to make a hatchet from a circular saw blade with a stubby leather washer type handle and try to copy one I remember my cousin having back when I was a kid. I’m pretty sure he made it but that was 30 years ago and I have slept a few thousand times since then.

We have been programed to buy stuff and live beyond our needs.
I'm not sure why I have a bunch of knives I never use?

Just ordered my first Spyderco folder - Para3 lightweight. Want to see what the compression lock is all about and it's got some steel I've never had either. CTS-BD1N, flat grind, made in USA. Looks pocket and hand friendly.
