That moment where you realize you might be an idiot!

I have a friend who never, ever reads the manual for his cars and trucks, and I always suprise him when I point out something he didn't know he had. One of his cars had a whole "Vehicle Indormation System" that had tons of info on everything from fuel on board, engine hours, etc. He had owned the car at least 2 months and I said, "Hey, so how many hours are on the engine?", and he had no idea and I said, "You didn't check it before you bought it to see if the hours corresponded to the miles the car has on it?". He denied it had any VIS, until I told him what to do to get it to come up. This kind of thing happens every time he gets a new/used vehicle. Later on, with another car, he was shocked to know he had HD radio, even though the logo was on the display.

Either way, next time I get a new firearm, I'm not only going to read the manual, I'm going to copy it word for word so I don't miss anything.

Heh! No, you won't! You'll just read the manual like anybody else, don't lie to us!

This happens to the best of us, so don't worry...we're laughing WITH you not AT you!

Remember, there are no dumb questions, but there are dumb answers.

There is a demotivation poster site (despair dot com) loaded with a ton of demotivational posters, they used to have a poster that said "There may not be any dumb questions, but there are a lot of inquisitive idiots."

ANYWAY...That tube (orange plastic in my shotguns) annoys the bejeebers out of me. Quite frankly, the only reason why I keep it installed is so I don't loose the bugger. It comes out at the range and goes back in when I'm done.

I suppose I COULD put it in my range can, where all my little parts and tools are.

Check your jurisdictional hunting laws/regulations on the subject, but essentially that plug is required to be installed when hunting migratory birds. This is governed by federal statute, specifically 50 CFR 20.21(b) which states ". No persons shall take migratory game birds: (b) With a shotgun of any description capable of holding more than three shells, unless it is plugged with a one-piece filler, incapable of removal without disassembling the gun, so its total capacity does not exceed three shells;"

State statutes may impose further limitations or clarifications. (Like in Virginia, for non-migratory birds and crow, the plug is not required to be installed.)

I bought a 2017 Toyota Camry in August '16. I have to admit it has functions I have never used. It has some type of voice activated system you need to "program" by saying certain phrases or something. I have never programmed it.
I don't want to talk to my car. :uhoh: I fear it might talk back.:what:
An IPhone can be synced to an in-dash system. Mine is, because the guy at AT&T did it for me ....I'm such a luddite:oops:.

The car doesn't have an ejection seat .... so I think I'm safe ..... maybe .....

We become too soon old, and too late smart.

Old German saying: "Wir zu bald alt werden, und zu spät klug," if I remember it correctly.

Well, “I thought I was wrong once, but I was mistaken!” is a sentence I tell my wife often. :D

I always read the manuals on my firearms. I am also afflicted with something my 3rd grade teacher called “Walter Mitty syndrome”. If you don’t know who Walter Mitty is, just do a search.
Anyway, I have read entire manuals only to find that I didn’t retain a thing because while I was reading I was doing something like; fantasizing about riding my motorcycle and having an internal discussion on why my accuracy has gone to crap when shooting my whatchamacallit. The older I get the shorter my attention span seems to be.

Then you have the manuals like the one that came with that gawd-awful Remington R51 I bought. The instructions weren’t quite accurate. They said nothing about having to cuss a blue streak while holding your mouth a certain way just to get the darn thing out back together. Sheesh!

As a very young patrol officer I rolled into work and was making my first cup of coffee for the night. I noticed my sergeant was looking at me so I started mentally reviewing the previous night to determine if I had done something stupid. I'm sure I had but nothing that was worth the sergeant's scrutiny. After I got my coffee he motioned me up to the briefing room podium. In a not-so-quiet voice he asked me if I was going to put a gun in my holster. I reached down and realized my service revolver was sitting safely at home. Silence filled the room as I walked past those grinning faces. To add insult to injury the floor had just been mopped so my boots squeaked with every step I took. As a rookie I would have been very happy to have a how-to manual on how to escape briefing room humiliation.

A lesson I learned, when you buy a brand new rifle in JULY don't wait until 10 days before deer season to mount a scope & try
to zero it, it might not shoot......It didn't.
Many years ago my friend bought a brand new 38 spl revolver loaded it with maxed out reloads, it didn't last
past the first shot, sure can't return it like that, you can try, he didn't get hurt was the best part, not bad anyhow.

I posted this years ago on another site to a thread titled "Stupid Collector's Tricks"

Bought a very nice all matching Yugo Mauser 24/52c from Empire arms. Picked up my first bayonet at a gunshow. That night put said bayo on that rifle. Tried but couldn't not remove said bayo. Pulled and pulled and finally tapped with an old wood block headed hammer. Finally it came off....with the front barrel band/nose cap. Held up the bayo (with cap still attached) and notice this little button and pushed the button whereas the nose cap fell freely to the floor. My cat just rolled his eyes at me on his way back upstairs.

I use the voice thing all the time! Why wouldn't you? The programming is just it learning how you pronounce the words it uses.

I get in the car, and call the Chinese place for takeout:
Me: "Call BM Chen"
Car: "Calling BM Chen"
Only thing I did with my hands is press the green voice command button and then the red one to hang up. They are on the left side of the steering wheel.
No taking my eyes off the road.
Calling a friend of mine:
Press green button:
"Call Doug"
Doug answers.
I can change the radio station, music source (FM, AM, Sirius)
Raise or lower the volume. And it does other stuff I don't care about, but the phone stuff is used constantly. Just the hands free part is a huge improvement over holding the phone up to your head.
Your car isn't going to bring the Gestapo down on you.

For a bit of fun,

So, I recently bought a Maverick 88 as my first shotgun. I took her home, read the manual, racked her a couple times and went to bed. Over the next week I looked at the manual a few times over and then took her to the range. To my horror I found she only accepted two round instead of five. I searched the internet for how to fix what and what to replace parts with. I posted on this very forum and got an answer. A wooden dowel is used to plug the magazine tube for bird hunting. Removed the dowel.
.

You are not alone my friend, I did the EXACT same thing with my Maverick 88. Lesson learned on my part.

It's not generational. A buddy of mine bought a new dive computer that was an updated version of the one I owned. I wanted to know about the new features (and knowing I would end up showing him how it works) so I borrowed the manual. I knew damn well he was the type that would never, ever RTFM so I wrote on a random page that I would buy him a steak dinner if he asked for it.

Never had to pay.

I am the type that ALWAYS reads the instructions and the manuals. Oh and I still screw things up!

That's sorta like shooting a squirrel or rabbit with a 30-30... you better be a damn good shot or you're gonna have mess! Ask me how I know....

:D

Not if you load .310 round balls on top of a powder puff load of Unique (there are other powders that work well for this also) with poly fiberfill (pillow stuffing) to take up the extras space. I loaded up those for taking rabbit, squirrel and grouse while deer hunting and not blowing them into a fine red mist, or alerting the whole county's worth of deer.

So that's what it does!!!!!

Seriously, I suspect I could use it if I wanted to. I rarely have used the I phone through the car unit but I have no problem at all using buttons. I know that's "old fashioned," :D but then .... many of my guns are old fashioned too.

What an interesting idea... I have a sack full of .310 lead balls just looking for something to be used in, and the wife has gobs of polyfil for her sewing projects. Would Bullseye or 2400 work in that application? PM me if you'd rather not derail the thread.

It is amazing how some firearms come with really good manuals and some come with almost nothing. Then there are those that you have to down load the manual from a web site.

One thing I really never did was read a car manual. Might look up things as necessary, but never really sat down and read one. Just bought a RAV-4 Prime. Opened up the door to the charging area, plugged it in and plugged in the charger. After the prescribed amount of time, I walked over to the charge plug, pushed the release button and tried to pull it out. It would not budge. I was about to call the dealer as I just got this car, and then figured ok I will look at the manual. Glad I did not yank to hard and break anything as when the doors are locked, the charge cable is locked up too. Unlocked the doors, pushed the button and out it came as easy as can be.

So, the old adage, "When in doubt read the manual" works.

Next I was wondering why I wasn't getting the great mileage I expected only to find out that I had manually elected gasoline motor only and not electric only or Hybrid.

Before I do anything else, I think it is time to read cover to cover.

Even with No Manual…

..if you began getting short of breath during routine exercise,, would you think that something might seriously be wrong?

I thought that I was just running faster than usual!
Even a Cardiologist …detected nothing with his stethoscope …as his treadmill test had to be scheduled way in advance.

The heart attack felt like an instant Bad Flu… and was only two days —after— the visit to the Cardiologist. 100 percent blocked Widowmaker Artery!:what:

I was stupider than you guys.
