Pest Control Air Gun Question

I picked up an Aspen Seneca on a whim at a pawn shop that had seen some use...but it held air and after testing it some I decided to try some heavy 22 Eunjin 28 grainers out of it and shot a .5" group with it at 50 yds., and have now found that it likes all the heavies i've fed it. Best 250 $ I spent in a long time.

I have my eye on a shrouded .22PCP, possibly the Gauntlet from Umarex to go with m RWS 34 in .177. That .177 gets two loud noises - the spring and the sonic crack so something quieter to take out the squirrels would be better.
Are you shooting alloy pellets ? That is the only way a model 34 gets super sonic . They aren't good for the gun and will eventually damage it. Like shooting too light of an arrow from a compound bow

I have one also in .177 and it seems louder than my Red Ryder :)
They say it has a Silencing Barrel Device built in.
You are comparing an smoothbore Airgun driving a 5.1 grain steel bb less than 350 fps to a rifled airgun driving an 8 grain pellet above 900 fps I think if you have someone else shoot booth of them while you stand a few feet away you'll find there isn't as much difference between the sounds as you think

Lead pellets from Gamo, RWS, and a few others

One option that does not evolve a suppressor or air rifle but is still pretty quiet. Get you a 22 LR with a fixed breach and with the longest barrel you can find (26+ inches) and find some CCI CB longs (https://www.cci-ammunition.com/rimfire/cci/cb/6-38.html) or CB shorts (https://www.cci-ammunition.com/rimfire/cci/cb/6-26.html). It's a 29gr bullet going a nominal 710 fps from either cartridge. From a long barrel 22 LR I have found this combination to be nearly as silent as many shorter barrel 22LR shooting suppressed sub-sonic ammo. There is still plenty of energy here to kill squirrels at modest distances. In my experience from a 27.5 inch Winchester Model 67 it will shoot through a pine 2x4 through the 1.75 thickness and I can distinctly hear the firing pin strike the cartridge over the muzzle report. Significantly quieter than my Gamo break barrel .177 pellet rifle.

My Gamo Whisper is quiet, accurate, and has plenty of power for small game, plus they are fairly inexpensive. Mine was less than $100 for a refurbed closeout.

The 3-9X scope that came with mine won't hold a zero though so plan for the expense of a better optic if you need a scope.

In my 2" NAA revolver, the 22 CB Longs are quieter than the Colibris. And they killed many a oppossums. It might take mutiple shots but gets the job done. And they are about as loud as someone slapping a piece of wood against another piece of wood. My wife says she can't even hear it inside the house when I shoot it outside.

Yes, I know I'm not supposed to shoot sqirrels in town but the town I live in is such a toilet anymore that maybe LE will leave me alone since they can't really stay on top of the murders and shootings that happen here all of the time now. I've tried the trapping thing and it was too big of pain in the hind end to continue with it.

Yeah, they probably don’t have any problem with writing speeding tickets though. That and nailing you for an offense that locally might be the same as discharging an actual firearm would both be safer than going after “real” criminals. Quotes used for you, as far as the law is concerned the difference won’t mean anything until the sentencing phase, if then.

Hiring the pest control business in your area now would still be cheaper than the cheapest lawyer later.

Yeah, I don't know why they include such a garbage scope. Seems like a decent set of irons would be a cheaper, and better, investment/selling point. I put a 4X UTG scope on mine and have been impressed. I can (fairly) consistently hit a kickball in our pond that is stuck under some overhanging brush @ 130 yards out...

I have a Benjamin Trail NP2 in 22 it shoots an honest 790 fps that is shrouded/silenced . That is fairly quiet
............... Same here and being a chronograph owner I can vouch for that velocity. Depending on the pellet, some are even a little over 800 fps. I don't consider it noisy and I've even squirrel hunted with it, which is legal here. Longest shot on a squirrel was about 20 yards but it did the job. That shrouded / silencer gizmo seems pretty effective although I know that some folks still claim that it's loud... IMG_0590.JPG . I've known guys who lived in urban neighborhoods with squirrel problems who have shot backyard squirrels with air guns from indoors through an open window. They say that's the quietest way to do it without alerting the neighbors.

All airguns are different. Two identical guns will prefer different pellets. A good solid headshot at 500fps is plenty with any pellet weight. The whole issue comes in finding what pellet will group like that for you in your specific gun. You don't wanna chase down a squirrel with it's nose and mouth gone but brain intact. You also might luck out and find a gun that tolerates destroyers in which case you can aim at the whole squirrel and not just the head. That's best case scenario though and I wouldn't count on it. If you plan to get a scope at some point get a uk legal gun. I've got a nitro piston elite .117 and it's eaten 4 scopes and three mounts. Recoil is just too violent. Would be complete overkill if it would shoot hollow points but it will only eat silverpoints which fly straight through anything without dumping any energy. Tons of power but I can't get squirrels with it humanely. I'd grab a 760 NOT a 760b (very important), a tin of destroyers, and experiment with groups using 6-9 pumps to see what works best. There's always gonna be flyers though so it's good to have a backup gun at the ready.

Curious question why is it ok for head shots on small game but not something like deer? I keep reading and hearing you shouldn’t shoot dear in the head but head shots for squirrel are normal? I get that squirrel are small and if you do body shots meat loss can happen. Just something I’ve noticed.

I think that's the issue I'm having with my Wildcat Whisper right now. Using the Gamo scope I'll get it zeroed at 20 yards for a few shots and then it's way off again. I've zeroed it three times now. What scope did you end up adding to your's?

IMG_3705 (1).JPG CCI Quiet from my old Winchester M67 and Mossberg lever action are less noise than my Co2 powered BB/.177 pellet gun. They're sub sonic but have enough juice to kill Squirrels. I actually didn't think old Winchester had fired the first time I used Quiets.

I got an Airforce Condor SS in 25 cal, very accurate and quiet. I could wack them at 3-50 yards easy when I lived in Kansas City and had it dialed down from full power. Out here in CO where I live now I don't have any critters to play with.

You can purchase an air rifle with an integrated suppressor such as one of the Gamo “Whisper” line. The are legal so long as they are integral and not an add on part.

BTW my buddy now has that Aspen noted above and he's killed 6 head shot rabbits in a row with those Eun Jins pellets at 35yds and less no misses...yet.
