The main problem I see with the carbine as a suppressor host is the twist rate. A carbine with a 1/8" twist shooting 180+ grain bullets would be awesome suppressed.Carbine always seemed a poor host.
Ammo was predicated around being supersonic, the gas port in the rear, with the short tappet also in the rear, with no easy way to lock up the bolt.
A complicated combination at best.
I consider the gas port being right in front of the chamber as a positive feature. Think about it, it's a lot easier to get a pistol gas AR to function with subsonics than one with a carbine or longer gas system.
The closer to the chamber your port is, the faster burning your powder can be (within allowable pressure) and faster powders are generally quieter than slower ones.
The inability to lock the bolt or cut off gas is a total nonissue to me. Action noise that seems loud to the shooter is almost imperceptible from 30 or 40 yards away. I prefer my semi autos to work as designed rather than as clumsy straight pulls.
9mm Luger ammo was "predicated" around being supersonic, but it's pretty quiet through a can when loaded with heavy subsonic bullets.
