Midway Surplus M1 Carbine

I picked up an IBM in VG-F with bayonet lug. I have dearly wanted one for the longest time, and the IBM connection is interesting to me and also local.

I paid full price. I am reasonably confident at some point in the next ten years it will be worth more than I paid, but you know, it's my hobby, not my business, and so with guns and knives I'm ultimately happy to break even at the end of the day.

There were 6 million. How many were lost in battle and destroyed?

How many were taken by 3rd world countries or even 1st world countries, never to be returned?

How many are in museums or motion picture arms rental companies?

I doubt anyone has a correct idea how many are actually in US civilian hands.

How many were torch cut or sent thru 'CaptainCrunch'?

My wife has her Rockola ( Royal Tiger buy) and keeps it handy at the fish rack insted of her handgun.

Perfect use, that’s exactly what they were designed for, to replace a handgun.

Although the intended targets may be somewhat different. lol

i just bought this IBM m-1 carbine and i am in the prosess of learning about it, its in new condition sold in 8-63 with the DCM box. i also have a winchester, also a DCM rifle in very good condition.

Speaking of M1 Carbines, was browsing through Classic Firearms, and they have a broken stock M1 carbine in their gunsmith specials...
Yes, its still $1300 smackeroos, but someone will get it.

The shop I used to spend most of my time in before I moved always had real nice military rifles and handguns, and used to have a good number of early DCM guns that people must have just bought and put away. Collectors I suppose, but back then, you had to be a shooter as well, in order to get the guns.

They had all sorts of really nice and basically brand new M1's, M1C's and M1D's, and M1 Carbines. They often had some nice 03's of various vintages too, but I dont know if they were DCM guns. Prices were usually pretty salty too.

By the time we got our DCM M1's back in the mid 80's, they were for the most part, really rough. Stocks were all beat up, and the metal wasnt the greatest. The guns were functional and seemed to shoot OK, but they were pretty ugly. Back then, they were going for $165, and you still had to shoot the DCM matches to get one.

I always wondered where the CMP came up with all the "nicer" guns once the DCM was done away with.

The market has spoken.

Probably raised the bar on future Carbine sales.

I'm not surprised they sold instantly. There will be a titanic demand for .30 carb rounds due to this tremendous influx of guns needing ammo. I predict .30 carb will be virtually unattainable for months to come. Yippee.

If you reload, its cheap and easy, and tends to be a good bit more plentiful. :)

Seems to me, over the years, Carbine ammo was never really "cheap", even the surplus stuff. That was one of the main excuses I used to not pick one up when they were cheap.

Should have figured that out sooner. :)

Picked up mine today. Midway sure shops fast. I'm sort of suprised it arrived in one piece. A couple layers of bubble wrap in a flimsy crushed box.
A few dents and dings in the stock but no chips or cracks. Filthy as hell.

I will shoot it next week. If it runs then time to buy a mold and some dies.

Midways shipping department has always been like that. Overcharge you on the shipping, and scrimp on the packing.

Ive had a couple of packages where they packed heavy items like boxes of bullets, with more delicate things, like calipers, etc, and put them in an oversized box, with a couple of plastic bubbles. UPS must have a paint shaker they run everything through too, just to make sure. By the time I got them, everything was all busted open and busted up. They replaced the calipers with a new one, and that came loose packed in a box.

Call them up and bitch, and yea, yea, we'll tell them. o_O

Glad your Carbine made it OK. :)

I am just learning about M1's here is my Quality Hardware (VG-F) box came through fine, no dents or tears. Seems to be in very nice shape, just a tad of cosmoline under the top handguard and in it.
Serial # 156XXXX
Quality Hardware under adjustable sight
ROCK-OLA barrel dated 2-43
Top handguard marked OI
Stock only marking I could find is a "V" in the receiver well
Square cross hatch on recoil plate
"L" on Trigger group
flat bolt
UI on the barrel band - Type 1

what is the "V" in the receiver well?
