I visit my in-laws several times a year in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. And there is a gun shop on an Indian reservation. Is it fair to assume I would not have to pay tax or go through a gun background check if I purchased a firearm in that store if they so choosed?

In the U.P. of Michigan, on reservation property at Indian gas station, fireworks, cigarette store, prices are quite a bit cheaper and I am told they do not recognize nor pay taxes and so they pass that on to all customers.

The federal firearms laws apply everywhere in the US. Native American reservations are not exempted from federal laws. They can be exempted from some state laws because they have law enforcement jurisdiction over the reservation territory.

In Okie-land, the Reservations CAN be exempt from certain State and local taxes: specifically sales taxes.

Most of the Tribe-owned stores that I know of simply substitute Tribal taxes to take up the slack. The purchaser ends up paying very close to the same amount in taxes, just to a different entity.

How this applies to FFL, and gun sales, I don't know.

on private ownership of firearms on the Subcontinent
I want to remember being told it's a tiered, per gun, License system like much of Europe. That was from an Australian, who was comparing how the different former Crown areas did things.

Ok, per Wiki there are 3.3 million licenses and 6.9 million firearms registered to those licenses. And I was wrong, only the one tier of ownership. All pistol carry is required to be concealed.

Going back to the old days of the Raj, private ownership of "military calibres" is not allowed. Not by cartridge, by bullet calibre, so you don't break down sporting ammo to reload stolen army rifles like .577-.450 and .303. They have, instead, rifles called .315 calibre which is really 8x50R Mannlicher. Although you may have a .30-06!

Handgun limit is .32. They used to make a copy of the .320 Webley Pocket revolver but now only list a .32 auto that resembles some Euro East Bloc type.

I do recall a video of an Indian Women's Air Pistol Club.
