Sorry I didn't mention the caliber earlier. It's a 38. You opened the door for my next question. Is it safe to shoot off-the-shelf 38 S&W factory ammo or is it advised to handload lighter charges? I don't own any other 38 S&W firearms.

Having fired a lot of .38S&W of varying power throughout many breaktop revolvers, I have found all examples of factory .38S&W target type ammo are extremely lightly loaded. With a smokeless era Iver Johnson in good mechanical shape you should have a very hard time wearing it out with factory .38S&W ammo.

Your comment is good to hear. I'd like to do a little plinking with the IJ, but didn't want to invest in dies and 38 components. The last time I shot anything 38 was fifty years ago in the Navy when I carried a 38 S&W revolver in my flight vest.
