Was at the gun shop. They have tons of Red Army 7.62x39. I just bought a new Ruger Ranch. Is this stuff safe to shoot? I did some damage in the past shooting the old russian surplus crap - don't want to repeat that mistake.

The primers used in Russian ammo for about 15 (+) years have been Non-corrosive. This info was stated many times on " the AKfiles". Seasoned owners on SKSboards can also explain.

I've shot many thousands of rounds total, shared by three (former) SKS, four imported AKMs and my imported Czechpoint VZ-58 ; >>kept a piece from Each box: 2,300 rds. in a bag << so far used in the VZ.

All of those guns usually go about 2 - 8 weeks before Any sort of internal cleaning. They are regularly wiped on all external metal surfaces.
:cool:No indications of any corrosion have ever appeared, in any of them.

Are there brands that you stay away from because they are more dirty?

bobduhgeek: As for "dirty" Russian ammo brands people might avoid......

.....it .has never even been considered, from my perspective. I only shoot approx. 60 rds. per session in the VZ-58, or one of my imported AKMs (plus a .22 handgun).

It never even crossed my mind. A fraction of my stored reserve of 9mm is recent production Wolf, and there is nothing that has been an issue: Sig P225, CZ PCR, Walther P99 AS, 3rd. Gen. S&W.
People simply need to do >> light cleaning in a gun's chamber << , so that the residue does Not accumulate (outside the chambered, rigid steel cases) for very long, which could make extraction less reliable.

* If there's not a bit of residue on patches using Ballistol, then I've not used a gun enough :feet:. It needs to go more often to the club (!), which is 12 min. away.
