Hello!! I’m new here!

I inherited from my father a couple of years ago, two .38 S&W revolvers that belonged one to my grandfather and the other to my great-grandfather. I really want to know the history of them, but I want to start with the one that’s supposed to be the oldest!

In my poor experience, I believe it’s a Model 10... but I’m not sure because rumor has it that it was given to my great-grandfather as a present from his son-in-law (my grandfather) around late 40s...

Characteristics are:

a) .38
b) 4”
c) round I think!
d) 6 rounds
e) fixed
f) C 231106
g) ???

I’ll try to post pictures!

From your serial number I'd say you have a square butt S&W M&P "pre model 10" that was made in 1953.

I don't think they started stamping them as Model 10 until 1957.

edited to follow the rules..
a) caliber .38 special
b) bbl length (from cylinder to muzzle) 2"
c) grips shape (round or square) Square
d) number of shots/cylinder bores 6
e) type of sights. adjustable
f) serial number, and if there is a letter in front of or anywhere near the s/n on the bottom of the grip k73341x
g) Model number if it is under the crane.15-2
That number, if it is the s/n, should come from the butt of the grip (or under the barrel or face of the cylinder).

Hello!!! Here I am again with my other inherited Smith! I believe it’s a Model 36, “Chief Special” but would love to know aprox year of manufacture! This was my grandpa sidearm, and he was kinda rancher/cowboy so you’ll see it’s rusted! He used it a lot! I have original grips, but they’re ruined, so it has this Uncle Mikes rubber ones.... I’m looking forward to purchase the original wooden ones!

Made around 1953, what a collector calls a "Baby Chief's Special", see the smaller trigger guard than later guns.

I'd be looking for ways to get that red rust off of it. It will be pitted but it doesn't have to keep rotting.

Thanks a lot!!! Any tip on how to get rid of the rust without damaging it too much?

Just purchased this S&W 66-2 from retired NYPD officer. Curious about the non standard serial number? Also date of manufacture. Target hammer and Trigger look like replacements. The 66-2 looks like a strike over on a 66-1. He claims he bought it new about 40 years ago.
a) caliber: 357 Magnum
b) bbl length: 4.125"
c) grips shape: Square
d) number of shots 6
e) Red Ramp/ adjustable rear
f) serial number: 134K667
g) Model number: 66-2

1982

I have a 2.5" and 3" Model 66-2.

The 2.5" has a ACC prefix.
The 3" has a ALH prefix.

So, here goes.

.32 W C F Ctg
5in barrel
Round butt
6 shot
Fixed sights
92990 (there's no letter near the serial)

I think it's a 1914, but to have any of you with more knowledge than an amateur like myself would be more than appreciated. I used an xbox controller for scale, as I dont have anything to get a proper measurement of the barrel.

Thanks a lot!!! Any tip on how to get rid of the rust without damaging it too much?

Try some oil and 0000 steel wool GENTLY

You can also use a copper penny and Rem oil to rub off the rust without removing and finish that may be left. Make sure it's a copper penny (Pre 1982), not the newer pennies that are 97.5% zinc.

Nice old gun, try to stop further damage.

Hello! I’d be delighted to learn the year of manufacture of my Model 29.
A. .44 Rem Mag
B. 8 3/8” barrel
C. Square grips
D. 6 shot
E. Adjustable sights
F. Serial # S2065xx, this serial number is under the crane, bottom of grip frame is obscured by wood grips.
G. Model 29, no dash.

OK, I need some help with this one:

Caliber: 38 Special
Bbl 4"
Sq. Butt
6 shot
Adjustable rear sight, ramp front
Model 15-4
Serial 207K547

I started last night trying to look up the value of my older sisters S&W model 19 .357. First thing I found is everyone refers to them as "19-x" model, and I found a list of the variants the x refers to. So now I was looking to confirm the manufacture year, to know the variant, and thereby finding its value for my sister who can no longer hold it up.

What is a little confusing is the serial number. Most I've seen are a single letter followed by 6 digits. This revolver has 3 letters followed by 4 digits. Anyway, here goes with the info -

a) .357
B) 6"
c) round grip I guess, see picture below
D) 6 cylinder
e) sights, see pictures below
f) s/n AJP7819
g) model 19-? which is what I'm looking for

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thnx

Welcome to the forum!

Except for the 2.5" snub-barrelled version, all Model 19s have a square butt- yours is hidden under the rubber grips.

Open the cylinder and the dash number will be on the inside of the front of the frame.

Wow ... that was simple. I'll send this info on to my sister, she lives 6 hours away.

Thank you for the quick response NightLord!
