7.62x39mm AR-15?

I obtained (unexpectedly) a large amount of that ammunition. I am just using my SKS for it. I don't care for AK's either, and I would never pay what they are going for now. Or would I buy a SKS now for what people think they are worth. I did consider buying a Ruger American in x 39, but decided against it. I have more than enough rifles of that type in much better calibers, but one may be right for you.

PTR makes Hk type rifles for the -39. Take Ak mags. May be hard to find now, but they are out there.

I have one, never loved it. It’s heavy, aftermarket is limited. Barrel is threaded 15x1. Also the mag well is really really tight, only AK Pmags work reliably. Surplus metal mags get stuck. That being said, it is wonderful suppressed.

The AR pistols are where it is at, especially when they are half the cost of an Ak and 1/3 or 1/4 the cost of a PTR. You can build and reconfigure them however you want. If the pistols/ braces are banned you can still reuse almost everything. That’s the beauty of the AR platform. Or you can just get one of the old round padded buffers from before braces were a thing.

I put a 7.62x39 AR Stoner 16” HBAR upper on an Anderson lower, using a BRA enhanced firing pin and extra power hammer spring to ensure reliability with steel cased - communist bloc ammo. I’m in California and I am stuck with 10-round mags with this gun, so the C-products 10-rounders I use have been 100 pct reliable so far.

I also have a 190-series Mini-30 ranch rifle. To this gun I’ve added a Wolff extra power hammer spring and use Ruger mags. This gun, too has been 100 pct reliable for me.

Both guns have a little bit more thump at the buttplate when compared to their 5.56 rifle counterparts, but it’s not so much more that they’re uncontrollable in rapid fire if you choose to spray bullets. Accuracy isn’t match grade with either gun, but both would be fine for hog-deer hunting to 150-200 yards if I did my part with hunting ammo.

Either one would be a fun way for you to reduce some of that ammo stash, but if I had to choose I’d go with the AR strictly due to the better initial ergonomics and the levels of customization possible.

When (if?) you choose a 7.62x39, let us know how it shoots for you when you get a chance to bring it out .

Stay safe..

My PSA 7.62x39 16” upper is about 5 years old now, and with ammo costs I’ve shot mostly 7.62x39 & surplus 5.45x39 thru my ARs.
But PSA prices have jumped up quite a bit as well, not the bargain they used to be.

I do have a Bear Creek Armory 6.6Grendel upper for shooting steel case ammo. If their 7.62x39 uppers are as good, that’s what I’d get for a budget blaster.

beyond an SKS an AR is probably gonna be the next cheapest option. VZ58s start over a grand, as will a new Mini-30. A Ruger American Ranch bolt action in 7.62x39 is another option, but they are hard to come by, and msrp just jumped to $640. If that floats your boat, but you don’t want to run Mini-30 mags, Ruger sells the AR magwell insert as a kit (if you already own a Ranch and provide the s/n) so you can run 7.62x39 AR mags.
