My wife recently got her CPL and wants to start carrying. She has a Ruger LCP II .22. I can carry it in my pocket with the pocket holster it came with, but she wears a lot of dresses and stuff in the summer.

What are some options for a woman to carry not in her pocket? Small purse? Some other type of holster? Hoping some ladies on here have some experience or some guys with wives/girlfriends that carry.

Appreciate the input!

I hope so because I'm expecting a lot of flak for saying this: My wife and my oldest daughter both purse carry, and they both have concealed carry purses - purses designed for concealed carry. In fact, my wife has several concealed carry purses because she's always looking for the "perfect" one.
There's also another woman we know from church that we suspect purse carries. A couple of years ago she asked for my wife's advice about concealed carry guns, went out and bought herself a little Ruger .380 of some kind, completed the Idaho "Enhanced" Conceal Carry class, and my wife gave her one of her concealed carry purses - which she now carries to church every Sunday.;)

My wife, also, carries a Bobcat in a purse made for carry. My biggest concern is that she will get complacent and someone will make off with her purse.

Purse carry requires having possession of the purse at all times and absolute situation awareness at all times.

My grandma carried a oversized cigarette pouch and purse combination for the last 40 years of her life. In that purse was a pack of Virginia slims, a few dollars in cash, her drivers license, and an RG revolver. The Ruger would be considerably easier to fit than the old revolver.

My wife ended up getting some compression shorts from somewhere that has some spots to place a small gun. She's going to try that out. Otherwise she could just keep it in her purse in the pocket holster to keep the trigger area covered. I think the compression shorts would be a better option though.

Sometimes when it's hot out and I just have some workout shorts and a t-shirt on I just throw her .22 in my pocket, fits just fine. Normally I carry my 9mm but that's too big/heavy to fit in my pocket if I don't have a belt on. That Ruger LCP II is a neat little gun. Seems like hers prefers SK Standard+ ammo. It hates CCI Cleans. Surprisingly it likes Thunderbolts as well which is cheaper/dirtier but fires rather reliably.

I'm seeing a lot of use of belly band type holsters among women. I was never compatible with that myself; no matter how I adjust them and if I wear them high or low, they constrict my breathing. These holsters can vary in detail; some hang on their shoulders like a man's shoulder holster; some only have one strap going diagonally; and some just stay on the waist.

One other method that actually exists is to wear shorts under a dress. It is not common, but they do it sometimes.

But I never met a woman who agreed to wear a flashbang holster. Supposedly some do, I just did not meet them. Another method you'd think ladies would prefer is a thigh holster. But that never happens either.

One thing I have noticed about carrying in a purse and going out to events with friends, there is a tendency for women to set their purse down and walk around. It's probably not smart to do that in some environments. If everyone else has their purse sitting down in a corner or next to a chair, and one person is carrying their purse around everywhere they go, it looks awkward. My wife has a nice purse set up to carry a pistol and magazine in a separate compartment and it holds it well, but the handles are just regular size, it's too small to put it up on her shoulder. It's not so much an issue at some restaurants where she can sit it in the booth between her and the wall. But it can be difficult unless she wants to let it sit someplace semi-unsecured. A while back at the barber shop, we were both getting our hair cut at the same time and her purse was sitting behind the closest regular chair to where she was sitting in the barber chair. Someone else came in and sat down in the chair. She was done before I was, and it was her turn to write the check for the haircuts, and the customer sitting in the chair tried to be helpful and hand her purse to her. Obviously, it was heavier than expected, and the person looked at her kinda strange as they handed it to her. I wasn't too keen on the situation, but we knew the person and knew they were not a threat even if they were not expecting to pick up a purse with a pistol in it.

Purses are "off body carry" and always a "hard NO!" Purses get set down or stolen outright. I know there was a fairly-well covered case of a child reaching in and shooting the mother with her purse-hidden pistol in a store. Let me find the story.

As to carry options, here's a quick search. .

I plan to marry fairly soon and I'm curious myself how my lady will carry.

Guarantee you that 90% of women not working in law enforcement will opt for off-body carry. Fortunately, there's lots of quality leather work out there making dedicated purses for handgun carry.

"Hard NO?" Nope. Reality, bub. I work with women in law enforcement. It's worse than pulling teeth getting them to consider investing in good belts and holsters.

Mi esposa carries a SIG P-228 in a Galco Miami Classic most of the time, otherwise using a Kramer Belt Scabbard (moderate rise pancake OWB in horsehide), yeah, she wears jeans a lot, about 4:00. If she has to go off-body, she's got a SIG P-238 or P-225 (A1) in a dedicated gun-packin' purse.

Here is a you-tube channel, by a woman who carries. Several of her videos seem relevant.

I/We are not sufficiently anonymous, on this forum, as I am well-known, locally, by my user name, and my wife is involved in local events, so I’d rather not say exactly what, when, or how my wife carries, other than that she recognizes that off-body carry, if used, does mean that the one can NEVER set the gun down, and leave it unattended, even for a moment.

I have, and my sister just switched to, the Ruger branded De Santis Pocket Tuck. 55262.jpg Clip adjusts for cant and removeable for pocket carry, I don't remove it, works OK in a jacket or Khaki pockets. I have a LaserMax Gripsense on mine & it fits their Veridian laser version. Sister has standard version.

Sometimes my wife uses a sporty fanny pack that has been modified for a holster. We purchased some Velcro backer with adhesive from crossbreed holsters and also one of their pack/purse velcro holsters that are specifically molded to the firearm. It works quite well for both retention and drawing.

I agree one should avoid purse carry if at all possible. Purse snatching is a common crime and always has been. The purse is all they want, and the perps that do it are good at it.

A few years ago a close relative of mine had her purse stolen as she was starting up the steps of the sidewalk to her house. The perp grabbed her purse, which she held close to her body and had a strong strap over her shoulder.

The strap was so strong in fact, he dragged her all the way down the stairs and into the street before the strap broke. He got away with her purse and everything she carried in it naturally... her iPhone, her wallet, cash, IDs, CC and Bank cards, etc. Thankfully she had no firearm in her purse.

She said he came out of nowhere... no warning and no time for her to react. Her experience was not at all rare as crimes against women go, unfortunately.
