How i make HOT percussion caps

Unfortunately my shooting season is over. I’m looking forward to September when the temperature will drop below 100 so that I can experiment with my home made caps.

This is a great post. I've been making my caps with 22 sharpshooter tool and their compound. I've had good luck with it. I've tried alcohol and acetone. Acetone seems to work better. I broke down and bought duck cement. Mixed with acetone, I use a syringe and needle as a dropper. The drops are very small so I use 4 drops. Works very well. With the duck, there isn't much primer compound that will fall out. Very strong cap. I also tried mixing fingernail polish and acetone at a 1 to 4 ratio with 4 syringe drops per cap. This also worked very well with almost no loose compound. It also gives you a slight coloring to your compound depending on your favorite color. I'm using been green right now. It was clearance priced at dollar store. I've found I only need to tamp the mixture down into cups while dry, then add the drops. It works very well for me. I made a small dipper

I made a small dipped out of a disposable thermometer cover from the Dr office. I cut off the end to the size I needed and glued it to a match stick. Works well. It gives me a repeatable amount of mix in my cups.

I have a question though. Which ingredient in the P A is the binder?

The off white is the binder. There are two bags marked with ’S’ the yellow one is sulfur the off white is the binder.

I thought the off white was ground glass.
Isn't the binder Dextrin?
I originally thought it was ground glass. I was told about a test to verify what it is. I took a small amount, put it on a plate and added two drops of acetone. 30 minutes later it was a hard lump. Glass would not turn into a hard lump. I don’t know what the chemical is, but it is a binder. I don’t use it in my mixture. I add Duco cement to the acetone.

The #11 tool caps don't fit my Slix Shot or my Uncle Mike's nipples. They do fit my stock nipples and suprisingly fit perfectly in both my NAA Companion and Super Companion.

The actual cap is a jem. I lost interest over over a year ago trying to get a mixture that worked.

So here I am brushing tbe dust off of this cap making stuff.

Use your stock nips when using home made caps. It makes them work a lot more reliably

I hope that you are able to find a mixture that works for you. My formula works for me. My caps only fit the stock nipples on my cap guns.

I am currently doing a storage test on my caps. February will be six months of storage. I plan to take 12 next month and thereafter to see the effects of storage.

I have some batches of caps that are into four years and they work well.No loss of power. The binder with the kit(Small off white bag)just does not work. Leave it out and be happy. There are many other binders that do work. Many have been mentioned here A new one for me is a pinch of smokeless pistol power (700X) in a tablespoon of acetone.Let sit a hour covered and you have a great binder. It will not reduce the power and may in fact help a little.

I ordered another batch of the Prime All mix kit.
So you are saying set the small white bag aside and leave it out?

So, I have played with the little plastic caps on my single shot Philly Deringer, and finally bit the bullet and ordered the cap maker from 22lrreloader, now the wait begins. Wondering if anyone else has tried using the plastic caps in a single shot and results?

Yes I used them some years ago. Lucky to get two shots in a row. Sometimes the plastic got stuck in the nipple too. Pocket You would be hard pressed to find anybody who uses it.Especially after they have been at this for a while. You get tired of your prime crumbling and falling out.

The off white bag marked with a ‘s’ is not used. Everything else is mixed to the instructions. I put about 1/2 cap full in each cap. Compress the dry mixture with a punch. Add 1 drop of acetone & Duco cement mixture, let sit 1 or 2 minutes then add one more drop.

I have used plastic strip caps with two spots from Legends roll caps. I only got two or three chambers to fire out of six. They might do better with three or four spots. The plastic caps fit #10 nipples quite well. Legends roll caps are made in Germany and are a lot better than the Chinese roll caps.

I have made progress. .Mixing the Duco and acetone and using an old fashion dropper and curing @ 24 hours was a part I was missing. Using the paper toy caps -1 dot, some BP 1 more dot, a drop of the acetone mix, pack it, @ 30 minutes later added another drop of acetone , and a 3rd drop for good measures a couple hours after that.
Although they did not sound very strong at all when just testing the caps.. they did however work well with a full cylinder load....

Ps Hobby Lobby had a 1/8" paper punch,, it worked very well and not as time consuming. The 1/8 paper punch does pop a few along the way but still much faster

the #11 cap maker was received already, less than a week, I expected a much longer wait, now to start experimenting.

I have been reinventing myself with these DYI caps.
Mixing the Ducco with the acetone and using an eye dropper was the missing link. SO I tried the Prime All and left out the little white bag this time. Using the glue cocktail and letting dry completely seems to be the right recipe. Dirty as hell but they worked.

Ps I got the little glass dropper from Dollar Tree 2 to a pack.

I’m not sure if they are dirtier than commercial caps, but they are corrosive. The red residue makes it easier to see and clean.

Does anyone have more information on these 3 components?
Copied from page 5.
"mix the sulfur and antimony together very well before i mix in the potassium chlorate."

Where to purchase these?

I had a great learning curve from your post. rely great! any pictures of cap's after freeing?

This is where I purchased mine. It’s called Prime All. It is easier than trying to find the individual components. $20 for 2,000 caps is not worth the hassle.

I was gonna do a price comparison...I have the Prime-All already. I have finally have had some success after reading ya'lls modified ingredient list and the glue cocktail.

Any leads on where to get the Antimony Sulfide or Antimony trisulfide?
I found 2 vendors and the prices were far apart.
