Anyone rock a J Frame w/ what Altamont Co. identifies as "Legacy" grips (photo attached) or old school wood/other panel grips ? How do they fare when compared to modern factory boot grips ?

Buddy of mine just bought a Bulldog that came with a set of pearl grips almost exactly like those. If you have small to medium hands they should be OK. Large to extra-large hands (like mine) makes it a two-finger gun. I find them unusable for all, but the lightest loads.

Looks cool.

Shoots lousy.

For me, anyway.

The thin, smooth, pearl-type grips offer no traction for my hand, so under recoil the gun shifts easily... necessitating a lol of grip re-adjusting as I shoot through the cylinder. Plus, as Bob97 mentioned, every bit of recoil immediately goes straight into the palm of your hand with every shot and the thin panels don’t spread it out very much.

Again, those grips do look super, that I’ll agree. In my case, my snubs wear Pachmayr or Hogue, or factory Ruger/Colt rubber grips for critical use rather than something else.

Stay safe.

I like magna-type service grips on non-magnum guns. The Altamonts are used on my late 90's - early 00's pre-lock J-frames that came from the factory with the horrible Uncle Mike's rubber boots.

I have Altamont combat on my 640 pro.
Open back, thin, you can get a good three finger grip, but for medium/large hands they're small.
If I buy another J frame grip from Altamont I will go with their "Bateleur" grips, (for an all steel J frame) covers the back of the grip frame, lil fatter, similar to the grip on the SP101 below.

You want comfort try these Hogue Tamer grips, my wife loves them on her 642. It had Magnas on it and she hated them. 20200918_203034.jpg
A while back I finally found a set of Combat grips for my model 36 Mod 36-7-6.jpg

Ouch. No. I don't even like the factory rubber boot grips.

I have my Model 649 with the factory grips on it along with a Tyler T-Grip. feels comfortable enough and gives me just enough grip size to hang on to. My Model 638 wears the factory boot grip and that works okay too. I also have a set of Safariland Rogers Plastic Combat Grips that are feel great and give you more control but stick out a bit too much for CCW. I also have a Hogue MonoGrip which currently reside on my wife's Model 34. I don't like the Pachmayr Compac Grips for the S&W J frames as I think it's just too big for the gun. So I cut them down a bit and came up with something kind of different in terms of it's overall shape and usability.

Those are grips I don’t like either.. those and the awful grips that came stock on my Smith 317 .22. For whatever reason, the Hogue grips for the J frames fit me great so I swap the factory ones out for those.

Stay safe.

What’s nice about the Thai grips on EBay is the set you see is the set you will get, unlike other grip companies.

I waited a while to find a set with an extra nice wood grain pattern. Fit was perfect, nice and tight.
