Besides the 1911 video some might
find it informative the other two
recent videos, the Bill Wilson's preferred
range guns and Mas Ayoob's
and Wilson's liking of the the Beretta 92
(posted today).

1911's? They still make those?
Blah blah.... What do those 2 old guys know?
Experts shmexperts.
Nobody in their right mind would carry one of those boat anchors.

That's why I carry 2 of them sometimes.

Those that have "seen the elephant" would rather have a .45. Just my opinion. The 9 isn't a joke but the M1911A1 was designed for .45 ACP.

Please let us know how many gun fights in which you have been involved?

While .45 ACP is a wonderful round, for those who can shoot it accurately, 9x19 has been around since 1901 and arguably the most popular pistol caliber in the world.

I watched it a day or two ago. Most surprising was their discussion regarding the number of people who can't figure out how to shoot a 1911.

Ask Ayoob that.

He hasn't been in a single gunfight.

Yet, he, (like me) has done a great deal of research and have spoken with men who have.

I will not ask you if you have been in a gunfight, because that is a rude thing to do.

If the 1911 was the be all and end all of pistols then there wouldn’t be any others.

One could say the same for other configurations of pistols from companies like Glock, Beretta, Ruger, Smith & Wesson, Springfield Armory…on and on and on….

The 1911's biggest problem was it had a good snake oil salesman convince everyone it was "the one", and the believers caused a demand that Colt couldn't meet (and wasn't really even right as it was), and lesser makers started filling the gaps, and screwed the pooch for the most part.

Like a good dog breed that becomes popular, that popularity is usually its downfall. All of a sudden, everyone and their brother think they are dog breeders, and you have problems. And that's exactly what happened to the 1911.

A proper 1911 is a good gun, but it also is what it is, and there are better things available to us these days. Even Browning thought he could do better, even if he never got to see what came of that. And even then, that gun, the HP, more or less started the next revolution.

I carried a 1911 on a daily basis longer than anything else Ive carried over the years. Got tired towards the end of trying to get what I needed, right out of the box at a reasonable price. Even Colt started doing stupid stuff. Every Glock or SIG Ive owned, worked right out of the box. Cant say that for most of the 1911's Ive owned.

Even on gun forums, populated by "gun people", the percentage of folks that won't carry a gun with a manual safety, because "a manual safety will get you killed on the street", tells me the percentage of folks that would have difficulty getting a street pickup 1911 to work quickly would be very large among the general population.

So your 'having seen the elephant ' quote from Col. Cooper without credit was from your extensive reading of writers like mr. Ayoob.

I've never indicated or implied that I have been in combat or been in a gunfight.

I've been carrying a 1911 lately not because I want to but I keep gravitating to it. There's something about it that just makes sense. When I shoot it it's just so accurate and handles recoil very well. It's such a natural pointer.
I have a Glock 19x that I've been meaning to carry (and it's what I'd rather carry). I chose my carry gun off of instinct and what I feel most confident using. I keep gravitating to the 1911, and for years I never thought I'd want to carry one (the single action system). I carry condition 2, round chambered -hammer in half cock. It's a method that you really can't recommend to anyone, but it's what I feel comfortable with because as a revolver guy, I dont like walking around with a cocked hammer.
My opinions? Heavy, yes. Big? yes. But with a good enough shirt I can conceal it well.
I learned to shoot handguns on both the 1911 and Glock. So whenever I handle a 1911 it takes me back. I'm coming back to my roots again.
