It seems that my rem 1858 new army still shoots balls about 6 inches high at 15 yards adjusted to the lowest. I would like to know if anyone knows of a taller dovetailed front sight out there before I mill the frame slot for the rear sight lower?

It's a common problem and I don't know of any specific replacement front sight.
It's possible to build up the front sight with soldier or epoxy, or mill and replace the rear sight altogether.
One person replaced both his rear sight with a Ruger Blackhawk rear sight and built up his front sight so that he could shoot at longer distances.

Might check Track of the Wolf catalog, they may have a front sight that can be modified to fit. I personally would be reluctant to remove any more metal from the frame area on the Remmie as that area is not that strong to begin with. Just sayin.

Howdy

I bought my old EuroArms Remmie back in 1975. At that time, all the 1858 Remingtons imported into this country had short front sights.

It always shot high.

When I decided to buy a cartridge conversion cylinder for it about 20 years ago the first order of business was to find a taller front sight.

I don't have a photo of it with the original sight, this is the taller front sight it wears now.

Here is are a couple of close ups of the 'new' (20 years old now) front sight.

I seem to recall I bought an Uberti front sight for it. The new sight did not fit the original dovetail, but it was a simple task for a gunsmith to recut the dovetail to accept the new front sight. I just measured this front sight, it is about .380 tall, measured from the top flat of the barrel.

I would go to VTI Gunparts. They have a front sight for the 1858 Remington listed for $13. Item number 15. Be prepared to take the revolver to a gunsmith in case the sight does not fit the original dovetail. The original dovetail on my old EuroArms Remmie was too small. With the new front sight I was satisfied that my Remmie was putting my rounds right about where the point of aim was. Sorry, I cannot be more specific than that, but with the new front sight I went ahead and bought the cartridge conversion cylinder.

I would not remove any metal from the top strap, the 1858 Remington frame is already pretty skimpy.

See, someone other than 45dragoon agrees with me on the Remington frame... Though I have to admit one of my conversations with Mike enlightened me. I was under the impression for a long time that the remmie frame was stronger than the Colt, after getting into tuning the Colts my mind has been changed.

I agree and concur with this statement. The open top is a more Robust design. I own both and love them both but if I could just have one for multiple purpose use it'd be a open top 44 1860 or a 1851 fantasy gun

I really appreciate all the input. That rem of mine sure is a great shooter now that I did all of the accuracy work on it. It's better than my best 1911's or my python and I'm not exaggerating but it shoots high. I was reluctant to mill that slot and that's why I'm trying to find solutions other than backing up 80 yards or so. I also had no idea this was such a common problem with this model. I may eventually just make a front sight or build up that original front sight some. I have plenty to explore here, thank you.
