Long range tuning

20210717_174819.jpg
Shot number one is interestingly out of the group but I may know why as im missing my little rubber muzzle protector..( I forgot to take it off and shot into a thousand pieces) anyway im getting set for the next match in 27 days.
Here is 500 yards in a bit of mirage my point of impact is high about a minute, I held low 5:00 on the red dot but not enough... oh well..

Good morning HR brother's...
The National is over, Jason (the Iceman ) Walker is the 2021 IBS overall 1000 yard benchrest champion.
A great performance by a great gentlemen on a most challenging range.
I will attempt a link to the entire breakdown a bit later, I was mid 20's in HG going into the last relay with a chance to make up some ground when the wind blew all but 2 shooters completely off paper' including myself.
The smoke from the forest fires was so thick this week I had to run my scope around 30x most of the time .

@Nature Boy Brother I'm going to work on that over the winter and report back. Until then I believe that we should close the thread with the side note that even a ham & egger like myself can tune a rifle to compete at a decent level and on a budget.
With a fresh battle cry and remembering that I didn't have to shoot the bad condition as I had 10 minutes so why I didn't wait for my condition to return is something I'll ask myself until next spring.

Thanks to all you fellas for your encouragement through this little journey.

Much appreciated
J

Still impressive shooting! You have my admiration and envy lol. I've enjoy this thread, its been a very interesting look into another shooting discipline i haven't ever gotten to experience.
Thank you for taking us with you!

Thanks fellas'
It was my privilege to be in the company of so many of the nations top shooters, and to finish 29th in light gun ahead of world record holders and national champions was an honor in itself, my demise in heavy gun is something that while unfortunate is just part of the game.

Shoot Small y'all

The weather finally cleared enough to get to the range , figured I would get a tune started for this year’s matches at deep creek.

My goal is to continue to improve on my aggs and one way is to clean up the ignition with a bit of primer pocket uniforming and primer depth testing along with weight sorting each primer, loading those within .001g
All advice and comments are welcome and appreciated .
Jim

Yeah 30.6 ..that’s what I’m thinking, I’ve danced around that charge since last season lol.. you would think I would have run it earlier.

I’ll bet the ES/SD numbers are decent, maybe I’ll take a chrono next time

No problem mate’
What I notice in the upper group is the lack of odd fliers even though the wind is pushing shots I can read the target and have a good feel for what’s going on. I loaded up a few rounds at 30.6 which should give me a stable spot with intent to review the primer seating depth that are currently set at .004 crush however and after a conversation with a fellow BR shooter I may fore go that at this moment as this depth seems adequate.

Particulars;
Primer pocket depth .127
Primers ht including anvil .122
Primer wt. .239 G + - .001
Depth set .009
Crush .004

I went out this morning, only to find the forest service had the range shut down until 3:00, which is just about the perfect time for the wind to come up and sure enough I had 3 flags going opposite direction. Nevertheless I may be able to salvage something.

my base load is 1.823 ( .025 jam) but I will definitely take a second look at 1.817 ( .018 jam )

Great job what distance were you shooting?

Wow great shooting. I'm enjoying reading about your search for accuracy.
I've never thought about uniform primer pockets and seating depth, I guess that is something else to research.
