Do you own a new-made Winchester model 1886 lever action in 45-70? They are available at Bass Pro Shop/Cabella’s right now for about $1700. Since they cost so much more than say, a Henry-made product, I wonder if the furniture is that much better or authentic, better tuned out of the box, more accurate or why so much more costly. Sportsman’s warehouse advertises the 1886 for a couple hundred less but they are always out of stock. Thanks for reading this and look forward to your insights.

The raw design of the 1886 requires more machining operations and more final assembly fitting.

They generally have nicer wood and metal finishes than Henry as well. Henry does have pretty nice wood though.

The 1886 is considered the Cadillac of lever actions. Big, heavy, traditional, smooth, and old timey.

It is not the same gun as the Henry which does not mean it is necessarily better or worse. Just older design that has not been optimized for modern manufacturing though modern manufacturing has made it better.

I know which I would take if I were offered either for free though.

Hickok45 is noted as saying the 1886 is his favorite rifle.

I have a Henry and I looked up the Winchester 1886. It is 2 lbs heavier but has that crescent butt stock. That could hurt the shoulder. My Henry has a decelerator pad which makes it easy on the body. I am pleased with my Henry in every way. But I saw a 1886 deluxe casehardened at Sportsman's Outdoor ,on line for under $1500. It is a beaut. They also have a plain jane one for under $1100 which is on par with the Henry. But yes, they are outa stock.

Thanks for your replies. I asked Sportsman’s Warehouse to email me when that casehardened 1886 is in stock. That was a month ago. I’ve had some ammo and brass to make more either on back order or email alert for as long in 45-90 for my Winchester sharps for just as long. I expect I’ll stay patient because I get a 15% discount on top of a starting price $200 less at Sportsman’s than Bass/Cabella’s which in this 10% sale tax state equals a $400 difference for the identical 1886. That would buy a mite of ammo, if anyone but speculators were shipping it. Stay safe and shoot straight!

"Kochi????" Um, out of curiousity, mind providing a translation??

My youngest son purchased one of the Kochi Winchesters a few years ago from Sportsmans Warehouse and had to order and wait a few months. Its in 45-70 and it shoots like a dream, a good dream.

i hunt my original 1886 in 40-82 and when i set it next to my japanese 1886 the quality is seen in both of them.

Do you have google on your computer? Kochi | JapanVisitor Japan Travel Guide
Visited the Miroku web site after I bought a used Miroku Winchester sharps in 45-90. Since they dropped that line, information was limited. I am amazed that a company with major activity in the U.S. didn’t think it would be important to hire a decent translation service. As seldom as data changes, one and done would do the job. And no, I doubt this is a case of emulating errors in a Chinese restaurant’s menu to promote authenticity.

If you put a blind fold on me and then told me to pick up three different 1886s and tell you which was an original Winchester, a Miroku and the last an Uberti or any one of a half dozen manufacturers you could name, I’d get it right one out of three times from straight probabilities math. Maybe a gunsmith who had handled all three could do that trick consistently. I’d like to shoot an original one day, using a holy black powder round, of course, and then do the same with 1886s made by Marlin, Taylor, Uberti etc. wouldn’t it be nice to get together with a dozen like minded people at some abandoned gravel pit turned gun range on some forest services road, each with a different repo and blaze away at 100, 200 & 300 yard. Free style, bench, prone. We could each kick in $10 for an engraved trophy entitled Best Fun Shooting Veggies Ever with the top shooter by points picture engraved on the brass plate. Group pictures of the grinning contestants included. Id take that to the grave with me! Stay safe and shoot straight!

Sportsman’s warehouse offers a 50-95 lever gun, but of course, they are out of stock and I asked for an email alert when they come in. If enough of us show interest that way, Miroku might take the hint. They will probably sell out in about 15 minutes. If you get one before I do after me putting you on to this deal, you get bragging rights and I wouldn’t be pissed much, well at least not for forever, maybe.

my win 40-82 is a super shooter with the loads it likes, i shoot all my old winchester lever actions from 1873 to 1895. taking care to find loads that are very safe in the older rifles with low pressure and mostly cast bullets. with speeds of 1200-1300 fps and heavy cast bullets not much walks away and if they do ray charles could find them.

Those cast bullets look new made and a lot like the .58s I made for my navy arms repo of the 1863. Zouave. 400 gr flat nosed all the way to 600 modified and 630 domed Minnie balls in front of 50 or 60gr of 2f holy Bp.

Two different ball games I think. I have a Henry in .45 Colt and a Marlin in .357 Mag that I like, both are fine guns. But Winchesters offer a classic look and feel that the admittedly more practical Marlins and Henrys can't quite touch, I think.

Personally I think that rubber butt plate cover completely ruins the look of a good lever action, and depending what you're shooting, isn't necessarily that helpful. Full-house .357 out of my light Marlin (with a leather stock cover on top of the rubber plate to boot) stings about as much as a full-power .45-70 loaded up with black powder out of my heavy Trapdoor rifle, with the steel crescent plate. And if I had an '86, I would definitely be shooting BP out of it!

they are 320 gr sized .407 and shoot quite well with no leading at 1200-1300 fps, of all powders it like RL-7 and just about cuts bullet holes at 50 yards. i have shot black powder out of it, but the 1886,s are a bear to take apart for a yearly cleaning. the 1873,s and 1876,s are pretty easy to clean after black powder with the removable side plates.

Thank you all for reading my posts and giving me the benefit of your wisdom. A few minutes ago, I ordered a Winchester 1886 in 45-90 from Cabella’s. Their confirmation email says it will ship in 10-11 days. I’ll get an email from Bass Pro Shop in Tacoma when it arrives and hustle down there to do the background paperwork. Washington state requires I wait 10 days to pick it up. So I got 3 weeks to hustle up ammo. I ordered 200rounds from GrizzlyAmmo and a thousand brass from starline, both a month ago without a peep from either. I’ll post a picture when I get it, maybe, it I get it this decade.

Wishing you the best of luck with the new rifle- you WILL love it.... as the 1886 is a timeless classic that will never go out of style or usefulness! ....I have old and new alike in 45-70, 33 WCF, 40-65 WCF , and 40-82 WCF.....all shoot well and the sound of the action cycling is pure music.

Meh, the say after I ordered “my” 1886 Winchester in 45-90 from Cabella’’s, I received an r-mail saying my order was being processed. The next day, Cabella’s e-mailed to say “my” rifle would ship in 10-11 days to my choice of FFL, Bass Pro Shop. The following day, they cancelled my order! I checked their 12000 count used gun library and found exactly one in Minnesota for “only” $100 more than new. ‘Course I had already signed up for their credit card and club membership, but I expect that credit card will live a long time in the sock drawer unused. You see, Cabella’s cancel notice didn’t offer a back order option. If you happen across a low scored review of an online experience ordering Cabella’s products, it’s probably mine. The good news is I’m back to haunting pawn shops, gun stores, and the like. I call them mini vacations. In hoquium- Aberdeen today. Don’t get me started on ammo. Thanks for encouragement. I’ll get it done eventually or require my grandson to gitterdone before he can inherit my gone collection.
