Well, that's an expensive lesson.

Finally decided to try to clean up my cosmetically challenged Ruger MK III. It had some spots of rust here and there (there when I got it) the sights had been painted, grips dinged up and I'd never had it apart to scrub it out.

Thought I'd go ahead and do the loaded chamber indicator delete and the magazine disconnect safety delete since I'd have it all apart, so ordered the parts from Volquartsen. Parts arrived Wednesday and I couldn't wait to get them in and try out the gun after upgrades. First thing I noticed is way more rust under the grips than what was visible previously.

LCI delete was no big deal but hammer bushing and target hammer was a different story. Installed it 4 times and took back apart because the bushing was too tight in the frame and wouldn't let the hammer pivot. Installed factory bushing with new hammer, just fine. New bushing with factory hammer is too tight. Proceeded to lose the safety detent (finally found it after about an hour). Stuck the factory parts back in and called it a night.

Today, I dropped it off to have a professional work on it. Told him to go ahead and order the whole accuracy kit with adjustable trigger and all.
A few minutes after that, I asked him to go ahead and order the threaded 4.5'' TacSol upper for it.
Then told him to go ahead and blast the frame and apply a new Cera-Cote finish. Oh yes, grips. Can't put black grips with red logo on a purple lower, so order some black and gray G10 grips while you're at it. I don't even know what the total cost is. I was afraid to ask.

I'll be honest. The Mk III has elements I could do without, and the reassembly is kind of obnoxious, and the trigger is worse than the MkII I had. Plus mine's a 22/45 with the cheap feeling skinny plastic grip.

But with all that to complain about, I love it. Super reliable, plenty accurate, I shoot it all the time. I hope yours is even more fun when when you get it back.

When the MK III came out, I almost cried. What a way to mess up a great gun. I love my MK II. I picked it up in a pawn shop for $125 back in 1987. It was a little beat up. About a year later I started doing hot bluing with a friend and the MK II was the first gun I reblued.

Don’t worry about how much you are spending, it’s only money, and you’re going to have a really sweet gun.

Well, you only have to buy it once. (Or twice, or so...) If you keep it, and take advantage of the upgrades, you'll easily make your money back. I don't have a pistol more accurate than my MK II.

Can't wait to see the pictures.

I'll definitely be putting up pictures, but the guy doing the work is about 2 months out right now.
Expensive is a relative term.

Back around Easter, my dad commented that he couldn't believe I didn't own a .22 pistol of any kind. I realized I couldn't believe it either, so I picked this one up for a cheap shooter. Didn't have to be fancy or pretty for my needs, but Mama fell in love with it.

Since it's "hers" now, I can't actually get rid of it. So might as well make it nice. And purple...her favorite. Haven't told her yet though.

Yep, been down that road. One idea leads to more "inspiration" and suddenly you have more in a gun than you could have bought it that way.
Without a doubt. I bought this one 20210419_110946.jpg
in April. You can see some of the rust, like the grip screws and bottom front corner of frame below the grip. Other side is worse, and under the grips is pretty bad. I think I paid $250 or so for it which was about all it was worth in that condition. I'll likely have tripled the investment without adding much in the way of value, but that's fine. I just can't afford to make a habit of it.

It didn’t own a 22 pistol when the Mk III came out but when it did, I vowed to never own one. I searched far and wide for nearly 10 years for a MK II slab side. One day, I stumbled upon a MK II Target 5” taper barrel for a ridiculously low price of $250. $250 OTD later it was mine and I am very happy about it.

So all that is to say, too bad you don’t have a MK II. You do however have a respectable MK III and are well on your way to curing it’s inadequacies. You will be happy with the results.
