In this latest "panic buy," did you over pay? If 'yes,' why?

Well, put it like this. I reload a lot.
I sold a -lot- of factory ammo & turned the cash into 50 BMG Hornady 750 gr match ammo
about 200 rounds of 50 cal. Had just found it was perfect in the Bushmaster, better than
anything I had tried yet. Still got others to try but stopped there because it can' do any better
than it did plus the Hornady 750 was still available at that time.
I don't think I overpaid for the 50 cal ammo, maybe I did. I got it from Lucky Gunner
at $62 for 10 rounds. Saw them later on Midway at $100+ then they dropped the price
more reasonable.
They all keep inching up on the price but I already had a lot of that ammo before I tried
it out and wow it does great.

Sounds about right ......thats the new normal. a year or two ago,I was buying 9mm for 10-14 bucks a box.
I purchased one box at that price as I was out of town and going to the range the next day. Fortunately I reload and also have a bit of stockpile of factory ammo at home. I won't pay scalper prices for ammo. I see it's starting to head south a little.

Okay, my excuse this time is that I was wearing my "progressive" lenses today and couldn't read the little stickers on the Bi-Mart ammo shelves... so I picked up a 200-round box of WWB 9mm 115 grain that turned out to be almost twice as much as I thought I was going to pay for it. I didn't need it (my kids will be sending my grandchildren to Ivy League colleges when they sell off the ammo I'm leaving them) but hey, it was there, and I'm an opportunist (actually was going to flip it to a co-worker who is perpetually short of range ammo).

I hoarded as much 38spl, 357 and 9mm as I could during the great Walmart sell out so I'm good for a few years. I started reloading in Dec 2020 so I have "overpaid" for SPP but I enjoy it and consider it a hobby. My fishing/boating hobby costs much more. My fish cost me @$30-40/lb. So I'm overpaying for fish too I guess.:)

I can honestly say that I overpaid for nothing - I was well prepared.

The president prior to Trump painted the handwriting on the wall in large , unmistakable fashion.

I feel for folks who found themselves entering our area of endeavor during the last year , they were dealt a lousy hand.

Panics or not, I’ve always kept a generous supply on hand, so the periods of shortage tend to be more about slowing down than actual dearth.
The interesting thing about this panic is the way prices went crazy. During the epic Sandy Hook shortage I was still able to accumulate a lot of ammo at regular prices, mainly by stopping by (pre-PC) Wal-Mart on my way to work in the morning.
With that avenue closed, at least for centerfire ammo, there are fewer reasonable options this time.
Nevertheless, by being patient and observant, I’ve found several good deals on ammo at our, otherwise absurd, local gun show. Usually from the guys that just have two or three boxes of ammo they’re trying to sell among all their random stuff.

I reload and have enough powder/primers/brass to literally last me the rest of my life. Bullets I'm a little shy on, maybe three years worth. That said, I was selling a 7-30 Waters Contender with bullets, brass, dies and ended up doing a somewhat involved swap.

Part of the deal is that I ended up with, among other things, a Sig CPO P229-1 I didn't really want. It's in new/refub condition that ran me about $650 in trade value. I think that's high but livable and, I've come to appreciate what a nice pistol it is, so it's all good.

I quit buying any reloading items because of the gouging and just plain high prices. One solution to the reloading dilemma is to stop or trim back on shooting. Simple! I keep various amounts of reloads for "just in case" moments for all of my HD items.

Probably not - for today's market, the Buy Now (GB) price seems pretty standard, on the low end.
Whenever Atlantic Arms gets their new batch of ZPAPs (--this month--), I likely would have overlooked the correct e-mail, because they send out notice for random specials on other stuff, which doesn't interest me.

It arrives this week. With many cans :scrutiny: of 7.62x39 ammo (followed good advice years ago), why not?

Simply wanted a somewhat different (1.5 mm vs. normal 1 mm receiver thickness, etc, etc), fourth imported AKM.
Already have a Czechpoint rifle in 7,62x39.

Ive yet to pay MSRP for any gun or gun accessories, but for ammo ive paid market on one box of 9mms, one box of 556 (both for my dad), and 110dollars/1k for large pistol primers....the primers were miss labled at the original 5 bucks a tray, and i grabed two bricks worth. Noticed it went back and asked and sure nuff 10 bucks a tray....Is what it is, I used one as a bribe, and the other was given to a friend, so im not really upset.

Went into my local LGS to ask a question. Was shown a Hasten Escort 12 gauge shotgun for $175 including tax and background. Walked out with the gun. Don't feel I overpaid.

Panics no longer drive buy/sell choices for me. I actually sold off more guns in recent memory than bought.

But answer the original question: Yes, I bought and overpaid for ammo during the panic. Why? I wanted ammo for certain guns and I don't even remotely give a damn about the present cost.

I confess to having needed some 32-20 brass.
Won't admit to overpaying, but each case is stored in the safe in it's own container
and counted daily.

Just checked Gb tonight.
Still selling at crazy high prices (over a year after I paid the ransom) so at least I have company,
albeit that of rationally challenged fellow re-loaders.

I shoot Trap, Skeet and Sporting Clays weekly. I've been buying shells when I available so I don't dig into my stored ammo. I'm good for this year and next year right now.

I keep ammo cans filled for guns I own. Then I have other ammo cans with ammo for usage. I buy what I can when I find a decent price.

I haven't overpaid for anything. I was well stocked on primers, powder and lead (3-5 year supply) before the panic and had all the guns I needed as well. Oh, there's a couple of guns I'd like to have but don't need so I'll wait until things calm down.

Not panic really, but did pay a premium price for 11 boxes of 17HMR ammo. I paid about twice the usual price. Pre-panic price was $105 for 10 box brick. Last week, I paid $210 for 11 boxes. Last time out with my friend shooting prairie dogs, we shot 9 boxes. Not panic buying, just better than sitting at home waiting for prices to come down.

Last year in March, not a panic paranoid buy though. My friend and I fish at night (till sunrise) in a spot where 911 won't work. I've always wanted to get a SD handgun for just such an occasion, he's armed and I'm not (knife doesn't count). Just before we started to head home I looked down and saw a biiig cat track. Decided right there it's time to get one. Called someone I know and got a brand new never fired SW40VE for $350, that's what he paid for it like 10 or 11yrs ago. Came with the original box and paperwork, not to mention 50rd box of Magtech 180g FMJ. I think I got a good deal on it, it's perfect for what I use it for. Shoots nice to. I think where I overpaid was the $40 something dollars for the ppt. My last ammo purchase was a couple months ago. Was a case of WWB 165g FMJ for $300 out the door. A little hi but with everything that's going on not bad either. I just need to be patient and prices will drop some more. I think I was lucky to get what I got when I did. May your aim be true and just.

I haven't bought ammo since March 2020 before the SHTF and waiting for it to come down more before I do again, only bought one gun this year so far a M1 carbine by auto-ordnance though by end of year there may be one or two more I might buy

Over these many years I've purchased according to need and economics......yes a lot of my weapons are old and so is some of the ammo.....none are antiquated and the fodder still goes boom! If I was going to practice I'd buy five boxes, or more, one to shoot the others for inventory.....
