10 mm loads

Nearly overlooked this factoid!

Hot loads are best run through tight barrels...

I use drop - in Bar - Stos in mine (some fitting still required).

Yesss!

Of course!!!

I also have the older 10" Long Wolf barrel in 10mm...

I just regret coming in too late to get one in 9x25mm Dillon!
Really like to get my hands on some 10" barrels, lol. I'm still using the double diamond 45-10mm conversion. It's still teething...might need a different extractor to stop the stovepipes and subsequent funerals for 10% of my cases.

How in the wide, wide world of sports did you gather back all that brass? Most of mine out of my semi-autos ends up in the next county! I never find about 40% of mine.

Blue Dot so far is the most accurate powder in my 10mms that I've tested. Gotta say i was surprised that it ended up at the bottom of the heap for you, rfwobbly. In the end, you gotta dance with the girl that brung ya.

Blue Dot was near the bottom of the list in 10 powders tested at 3 different load levels with 165 and 180gr bullets. And taking into consideration multiple factors such as accuracy at 30 feet and felt recoil.

This is the result of one day's testing. I filled 3 bags like this.

You shoot outdoors, right? I only ever get to indoor ranges. Need some country friends that wanna do blacksmithing, shoot guns, throw spears, and do wood rat s***for my friends. Anyway, the wall of my stall on my right keeps a lot of it together. You could probably just hang a high clothes line with a blanket at a 45degree angle behind you when you aren't doing dynamic drills. I'm surprised no one came up with a brass deflector bracelet or some such by now.

So far this is my best answer to retrieving 100% of my 10mm brass:

Thanks for all the replies I am not planning on using full house loads all the time. I am however thinking about buying a 5" barrel for my Glock 20. I have heard the KKM thrown around a lot and would like a barrel that I don't have to worry about bulging cases. The reason for the 5" it's the legal minimum for deer hunting in Ohio.I know they make a 4.6 and a 6" Does anyone make a good 5" barrel?

I had a Storm Lake 6” barrel in my Gen 3 G20 and it shot great. Just had a bit of barrel hanging out of the end but functioned fine. I’m currently running a standard length KKM in my current G20 and am extremely happy with it.

Using 8.8gr of Blue Dot under a Berry's 200gr I got 1125 fps from the Glock 40. That's nowhere near max, so IMO Blue Dot is a great powder for 10mm. Power Pistol also loaded in between starting and max was 100 fps less, so unless Power Pistol significantly improves at max I'd say skip using that.

Everything I read it seems 800-X is a great powder for 10mm, Longshot too.

My absolute favorite powder for full power 10MM loads. Downside it’s discontinued and meters like corn flakes. Good thing for me is I still have 4 lbs left before I need to move to a replacement, which Longshot may be it.

Whaaat?!

What superseded it, then?

I was planning to try it out :(

Why not start with a 6" and re-assess after a couple seasons? If going long, I'd want max vel. Trim to 5 if 6 isn't to your liking. The original bbl fulfills other needs. Happy with my KKM/G20.

I'd like to jump into this discussion with my two cents if I may. I run two (actually three) 10 mm pistols; an original Colt Delta Elite and a more recent Sig P220. Blue Dot appears to be the best powder I have found so far to load both my semi autos. I use Laser Cast 180 gr SWC bullets in my reloads and push very close to max w/o any pressure signs, or difficulty of extraction. There are other powders available to load the 10 mm thatare good,, but I'm happy with Blue Dot and plan to stick with it. BTW, I just purchased a 4 in barreled S&W Model 610 in 10 mm several months ago, but I've yet to fire it. Will be using the same reloads in my new S&W and again carefully checking for pressure signs and sticky extraction. Love the 10mm cartridge.

I have a G20 and KKM barrel with 20 (or 22?) pound recoil spring and was able to chrono some rounds this weekend. A full load of BE86 under a 180gr XTP averaged 1230fps. Sig factory 180 FMJ was exactly the same at 1230 fps. Freedom Munitions 180 FMJ was 1025fps. The Freedoms felt weak as all get out while the Sig and XTPs were really pleasant to shoot.

I had the slide cut for an optic and am hoping to take a deer this year, thus the testing. BE86 is by far my favorite power for 10mm and many more calibers. I've tested 10mm with longshot, AA 9, 800x, and a few more I can't remember. All I can say is BE86 is very accurate for me and I have little reason to try anything else so long as I have a healthy supply of it

Don't mean to deviate off topic, but one of the reasons I decided to reload for 10mm instead of buy factory ammo was more than just cost savings, it was because the cheap factory ammo is all loaded so weak. Like, are all the ammo makers concerned that loading a 180gr 10mm up to 1150 fps is going to kill 1911's and they'll be blamed and have to replace the guns? It's either that or what they're doing is using the same powder charge as they do .40 S&W in the 10mm and all the presses are just offset by the difference in case heights. Makes sense as it decreases the changeover setup time, but the result is ammo that doesn't live up to the caliber's potential and thus makes people like us unhappy.

There's zero reason why the real 10mm can only be bought from companies that charge a buck a round. It's not like the extra half a grain or grain of powder in each round costs that much more.

I've settled on AA#9 for my max loads as it delivers 1250fps. with a 180gr load. AA#7 is used for my target ammo but I'm about to try some
VV-N105 as I've had really good luck with it in 38Super. Loaded some up but haven't tried them out yet.

I mean, unless the additional price is meant to cover potential liability like you mentioned. Still pretty sure you're right, tho. Maybe 10mm isn't as unpopular as they thought, it's just not selling well bc people can read and understand a basic ripoff. Had to check my factory box, they're 1190 from Ammo Inc. Whatever, I guess, I just need the cases. Might write to them and inquire.

1190 is fine, anything close to 1200 or over with a 180gr bullet is considerably more than what most other companies load 10mm to, which is below 1100 fps.

I think 10mm's problem has long been lack of guns, still is although Springfield has made one, bunch of 1911's now available in 10mm, but that's it. Another factor is 10mm is meant for full size, long barrel pistols, not no 3" barrel Sig 365 type pistols you stick in the IWB holster and forget about. Full size pistols with no military history like the 1911 and 92FS don't have much appeal to the civilian market.
