I’ll admit right up front that I am a bit late to the 9mm 1911 party. I have three 1911’s so I’m not a “polymer prude”, but mine are only in .45 ACP (and a .45 Super V-16, but that still shoots .45 ACP flawlessly). I truly love the way a 1911 feels in my hand: the gun naturally points where I want it to and the bullets just seem to hit where I’m aiming.

My 9mm guns are either duty guns (SIG 228, Glocks 19,17,34), a target Glock (17L) or a hybrid admin-duty and off duty Glock (43X), a surplus Helwan, a Ruger PC carbine or CCW guns (Ruger LC9, Kimber Micro 9). I guess it was high time I joined the 9mm 1911 crowd.

Despite the panic I found a reasonably priced SA Ronin 4.25 “Commander sized” 9mm, paid for it and waited the ridiculous ten days here in Ca. I got to pick it up yesterday, lube it and take it shooting today.

As a kid who grew to gun-loving age in the late 1970’s-1980’s, the two tone blue/silver 1911 look just sings to me. The gun was spotless out of the box, and the sights popped amazingly well in the garage light. Naturally it fit my paws like every other 1911 I have; wonderfully.

I grabbed WWB 124 gr fmj, Win 115 JHP, Blazer brass 115 gr fmj and Fiocchi 115 gr fmj and loaded up for the range this morning. I brought along my Glock 43X and Kimber Micro 9 to compare how this unfamiliar 1911 shoots compared to these familiar-to-me guns. :)

The Glock shot as I expected; a touch of finger pinch from the trigger but otherwise boring reliability as it put 21 center mass at 10 yds, two-handed. (A bit low, my fault as I was trying to shoot at the max speed of one per second this range allows.):

The Micro 9 had a good nose-dive jam on the second shot with the 7- shot mag, after that it was 100 pct with the remaining shots.

The heavier trigger required more concentration and a much slower pace of fire than with the Glock, but 15-shot groups at 10 yds were pleasing to me.

Then I grabbed the Ronin. The very first shot fired at 10 yds was a bit low, the second a tad high, the third to the right then the next 6 shots landed right around the 10 ring :):

I swapped targets and the next 28 followed suit by hitting pretty much exactly where I wanted them.

After putting about 125 through the Ronin with no hiccups, I certainly see exactly why everyone who has been lauding the 9mm-1911 combo. Soft shooting, accurate and (best of all) fun… I really wish I’d jumped on this train earlier.

Stay safe.

You've never shot a HiPower, then? ;)

I'm looking at your target photos... and all I keep looking at are those buckets full of brass along the wall...
I carried a 1969-vintage Hi Power back in the mid 1990’s that had been seized by the PD I worked for and then put into the “ok to issue” rotation after the prior possessor was convicted.

The sights were microscopic and the grip plumper than the 1911… but the gun was really reliable.

The brass is all the range brass that is sold to whoever supplies them with reloads too sell. Every time I go in there I see 5-6-7 full buckets or more lined up.

Stay safe.

I have had a Springfield Mil spec 1911 in 45 ACP for a very long time about 2 years ago I went to the local gun shop looking cor a 1911 in .38 Super but there were none available but he talked me into a 9mm instead. I'm glad he did, that is one very fun gun to shoot. Its a full size 1911 with a 5" barrel from RIA. in a way I'm glad I bought the 9mm since I already load for that cartridge.

I think I'm going to buy a really nice 1911 with all the bells and whistle in the near future but in 45 ACP, not 9mm.
Maybe a S&W E-Series 1911 or a Ruger SR Series 1911. I would love a Les Baer 1911 but I just can't swing the price.

Nice report on the Ronin, riomouse! Now there's yet another 9mm to consider. I have a friend who has his Dad's LW Commander 9mm, I love shooting it when we go to the range.
I always liked the Hi-Power, too. Still the most accurate 9mm pistol I've ever shot was a Luftwaffe issue P35, though the CZ Shadow 2 Blue I shot last summer was real close.

Congratulations, I couldn't find a Ronin in 9mm and recently bought the 4.25" .45 version. I did at one time own a Colt Combat Commander in 9mm and regret ever selling it. Dollar for dollar the Ronin line-up offers 3 calibers and excellent value in an American made 1911 platform. I'll add a 9mm when I can. 6-2Springfield Ronin.jpg

Sounds like the first Hi-Power I had years ago, only I would add to your description an unbelievably heavy trigger pull and a thumb safety that was nearly impossible to put on or take off!

My next Hi-Power, a Mk.II, was vastly superior in every aspect save two: it had a very serviceable matte blue finish and molded plastic grips, both of which were the complete opposite of the deep blued finish and checkered walnut grips of the T-Series gun that I had. Other than those two cosmetic items, my Mk.II is still one of the most reliable, accurate, and enjoyable to shoot 9mm.s that I own.

As for the plump grip it's definitely one of the most comfortable feeling and perfectly shaped (well for my hand at least), grip configurations I have ever found on a semi-auto. Of course the 1911, HK VP9, and the CZ P01 are right up there for me as well!

My first 9 mm 1911 was a RIA compact. It turned out to have a very generous bore and chamber diameter and accuracy was poor with standard sized bullets My solution was loading 38 special lead bullets and it became fair in the accuracy department. I really never cared for it as it had rather nasty recoil even as heavy as the little thing was and I eventually traded it off. My second 9 mm 1911 is a Taurus stainless full size and what a difference it is from the RIA. It is 2 ounces heavier than the 45 1911 and is very pleasant to shoot.

Congratulations on the Ronin, Riomouse. It's a very nice looking gun. Enjoy.

Your Ronin is sure a good looking gun. I've been a fan of the 9mm 1911s for many years and have had Colts, Kimbers, Springfields, Dan Wessons, and one STI. The earlier 9mm Colts with the traditional unramped barrels tended to be a challenge to get reliable with various bullet shapes, weights, velocity levels, etc. The later integrally ramped barrel guns, such as your Ronin, have been much more reliable for me from the get go. I currently have a Kimber 38 Super/9mm conversion and a Dan Wesson 9mm that are just boring in their reliability with any of the many types of 9mm ammunition I've used.

BTW, As an old 9mm 1911 guy, were I just starting with these guns and investing in extra magazines, I'd buy the Metal Form "Springfield front ramp" type. These front ramp, no rear spacer, magazines have worked splendidly in my 9mm 1911s. The front ramp practically eliminates any "nose dive" type malfunctions. Of course these are 9-Rd. magazines, not the 10-Rd. type that many 9mm 1911 shooters prefer.

A 1911 is my favorite 9mm to shoot (as per a different thread).

I also like my Star Super B and BM, which are 9mm pistols that look and shoot pretty much like 1911's.

My favorite 45acp and 40 S&W pistols to shoot are also 1911's, so it's not surprising.

Enjoy that new pistol, OP! They're a lot of fun. :)

Riomouse, I have that same model pistol and love it. I paid full MSRP ($850) but consider it worth every penny. I shoot it consistently more accurately than my Kimber LW stainless 9mm with a 5 inch barrel. The Ronin is one of the last pistols I would sell.

Really good looking pistol. Just personal taste, but two tone, barrel bushing, especially a barrel bushing that contrasts with the slide, no rail, single sided safety, understated roll marks. YES!
I might have to put one in the safe.

I was a bit under MSRP, but with today’s silliness I wasn’t too surprised at the price. I’m really happy with it so far, I doubt that it’ll ever be on the chopping block either ;). (Oh, I watched Beyond the Lighted Stage on REELZ the other day… my fav trio as well;).)

I think you’ll like it as much as I do. I think I’m hooked ;).

Started with a Dan Wesson VBOB in 9mm. Liked it so much I got a Guardian in 9mm. Followed by Specialist Commander in 9mm. Okay, I have 9mm 1911s covered.

Then I'm in the gun store and see a Bul Armory government in 9mm. Never heard of them but fit and finish was better than asking price. Well, I don't have any full size 9mm 1911s, so it followed me home. Been impressed so far.

Next will be fitting the Specialist with a threaded barrel and pairing it up with an Osprey or Octane depending on what looks better because that's what matters right?
