It was "roughly" based off the M778 30mm round the Apache choppers ran. Thats a .300 BO beside it.

I made it for my dad for fathers day several years ago. He's former MIL although I'm technically not.

Glue up of Walnut and Maple.
The 30mm x 113 is the ammunition type used with the M230 Chain Gun mounted on the AH-64 Attack Helicopter.

The PGU ammunition is different from traditional stuff, the driving bands are nylon as opposed to the traditional copper or iron.

Well, I’m starting to feel a little better so, this morning I got in the shop and grabbed a piece of hickory that I had used to practice on a few months back. It was almost 12” long, but warped.
I figured I could make something out of it, and decided to try and make a 50 BMG round.
Hickory is nice and hard, but not to hard and doesn’t chip out like so other types of wood.
I didn’t take pics of it before I started turning, it didn’t look appropriate for the forum
But here it is right after I finished turning it and was ready for sanding.

Here it is with a fresh coat of lacquer, next to a 50 BMG Dummy round that @H&R Glock sent me a while back. 5E8DF9F3-325B-4A77-8203-D07588490FB1.jpeg

And here it is all finished. It’s not perfect, but it’s pretty close.

I'd bet it's impossible to make wooden links to go with those, but......... I believe the gunny can make a complete wooden M2 heavy barrel from memory that takes down like the original, and fires dowels at high velocity. :) Some people can make anything.
Nice work Gunny!!!!

You give me to much credit.

The bigger stuff is easier its actually harder the smaller you go.

I had a bet with a buddy at the shop a couple of years ago regarding trying to turn a .22lr to scale. Neither of us has tried it yet.

ever see the Japanese guy that drilled a hole through the small Mechanical pencil lead, in a old wwii lathe.

How does this look? Only took 30 minutes.

I think I’m going to stay away from that off axis turning, might hurt myself. :)

Thats not bad! What kind of wood? Kind of looks like Padauk.

I've got to get this piece of Cedar finished before I start anything else. But I'll give a go here soon.

I'm fortunate I don't have to order wood as most of my blanks come from work.

Free wood. You’re lucky.

I am and I don't take it for granted. Certainly one of the perks of my job.

Another perk is being able to bring my own material into the shop to work on. I recently acquired some White Oak from my Dad that was milled near the farm he grew up on, from trees they harvested on their farm. Wood is 60 odd years old.

I'll be dressing all of it and making a 7ft dinner table out of some of it.
