Let me start by saying I’m not a flash light guy and I only have white lights on one 9mm carbine and a pistol even though I have IR lights on most of my guns. But for my new go to rifle I thought I should prob get some white light.

I’ve never had a 18650 battery before and the last light I put on a rifle was a surefire 2P and I thought it was great but dang! This thing can throw some light! I was in the woods (shade) on a bright sunny day today and could see the beam anywhere I point to.

It doesn’t look like much. And I think I got every part from a different company. The head is a modlite okw dual fuel. The body is from arisaka. The tail cap is surefire. And I’m using the unity tactical hot button.

One issue I put a lot of thought into but am still concerned about is the placement of the lens relative to the muzzle brake (compensator?). Here’s a top down and a side view.

My concern is that the lens will get covered and caked up with the grey carbon from the muzzle and I’ll have to clean it every time I shoot.

so my question is, does someone make a sacrificial lens or maybe something like a disposable phone screen protector that could be used to protect the rather expensive head?

I was initially concerned about the muzzle blast breaking the light head. The DD brake ports seem to go directly horizontal and I positioned the head below them fo minimize concussion even though it’s supposedly fully potted.

I looked at a million images in picture threads on other sites and people just have them positioned everywhere. But you never know who actually shoots the gear haha. So just because someone else did it doesn’t mean it’s a good idea.

thoughts?

The vfg came with the gun. My support hand (right) is wrapped around the forearm thumb forward. I just use the vfg like a hand stop for indexing. Not a choking the chicken grip

I have a vertical fore grip with light and laser built in. You might consider one of those if you want to keep a fore grip. They can come without laser if you prefer. Mine uses two A123's, but you can get them with 18650 also. I get similar performance to your pic and can light up a fence that's over 100yds away. The laser is zeroed at 100yds as well.

I have a Streamlight which I mount on a handguard using the factory switch at the rear. No fussy cabling. The lens is far enough back it doesn't get dirty. The barrel does throw shade on the scene at closer ranges and it's something a lot of guys change and rotate around the handguard to find the least worst solution. I use Covert linears and there is no side blast. Much quieter than a ported brake and muzzle jump is academic at best. Race brakes do get a few points more on the scoreboard. Hunting rifles much less so.

I don't keep it mounted as my rifles are used hunting and MO disallows any light source. It's also my "outdoor light" and I'm not grabbing an AR15 and pointing it around off the back deck just to see bobcats etc. That depression is bordered by a walking trail and I don't need passersby late at night reporting some crazy old fudd spotlighting them with a high powered assault rifle. Not even.

The Streamlight throws a wide beam with great illumination but the throw is a bit shorter than a Bulldog with lens I picked up earlier. That has a very narrow spot but pushes it further. For general use , travel, etc., the Streamlight is better.

I can also run the Streamlight on CR123's as a lower output substitute, expanding my power sources.

The battery and LED technology is amazing these days. At least to those of us that grew up with 6 volt lanterns and such.

Even the single 14500 cell led flashlights I carry all the time put to shame the officers standard for year, 6 cells and Xenon bulb.

The recharging aspect is an even greater than the light output, over time. Not sure how many hundreds of dollars I have saved on batteries using 14500 & 18650 cells.

If it were mine, I put a can on that rifle or move the light back a little. I also would go more for either side or even above 9:00, 3:00 because I might want to rest the forearm for a shot but that is really use dependent.

20210828_115454.jpg I have a streamlight on my HD rifle. It's mounted a good 2" behind my stock cage. No problems with gsr there. That puts the tail cap right by my thumb. I can do a momentary peek or click it on, no cable necessary. I have offset irons instead of a rmr..

Put the light where it works best for your grip. Worry about nothing else.

Lens can be replaced as needed. Especially a Surefire. They'll be honored to help with that when the time comes.

I have Feyachi lights on mine and they turn night into daylight.

Chapstick.
I wonder if that would work

never heard of that

I put the hot button where it works for my grip.
I’ll try to request some replacement lens and see how that goes

@taliv

can you do me a favor and post a shopping list for your light? I’m looking for something powerful like that but hand-held, not mounted

Feyachi products are typically a fraction of the price well know brand names are sold at but they good. Granted the quality isn't as good as the high end stuff but you can't go wrong with them. Taking away the "sponsored" item ratings they still rate between 4 and 5 stars with at least a thousand ratings, that's not bad.
However I just learned they're made in China not Italy as the name lead me to believe besides it would appear they are sold exclusively via Amazon. So if you're adverse to buying Chinese made items or buying from Amazon then by all mean, pass them up.

I have four hand held Gear Lights which I bought fairly cheaply and thought they were very bright until I bought my gun lights. The Gear Lights fail in comparison. That said you can buy, say a Feyachi and just not use the mount, they're still very reasonably priced. As I pointed out to taliv they're made in China and sold via Amazon, if that doesn't bother you check em out.

this is the handheld version of mine almost. Mine is dual fuel (18650 and 123) and this one is only 18650.

but this is the one you prob want
https://arisakadefense.com/modlite-handheld-plhv2-light/
it’s more appropriate for indoor/outdoor where the one above is more for long distance outdoor

the rest of my shopping list was just a mount and remote switch which you don’t need since you’re handheld.

btw you can get same from modlite direct.

when I first saw that I thought it was used lights. But that’s a link to used batteries! Including used non rechargeable 123! Why would anyone buy used batteries??

I have bought a number of used rechargeable batteries (mostly for cameras). Generally, the “monetary depreciation” is not as great as the “performance depreciation”. [screwed up - generally the performance depreciation is not as great as the monetary depreciation - sorry]. Not as big a deal on the 18650’s, but meaningful on Canon LPE6N’s! I got some screaming deals on Quantum Turbo batteries.

Make you a deal, I will send you a couple of used 18650’s to test. Let me know how they perform (I currently have no way to test them - buy batteries with the expectation of a need :cuss:). PM for arrangements
