I recently purchased the last Uberti 1858 NMA with 8” barrel that could be found In Stock through Dixie. Their search function didn’t bring it up. I had to scroll the entire catalogue to find the item hiding miraculously In Stock for $395. Some days it’s actually good to be me for a change! Who knows how long it will be before these replicas can be found on Midway for $250 again.

Uberti, Pietta and Pedersoli should still be in demand in Europe, especially their percussion and flintlock firearms, because cartridge guns are illegal ( or at least difficult) to own in many countries. So production should continue, and some will be sold in the US. I agree that the expected inflation will cause prices to increase, probably dramatically. The availability of percussion caps will also be an issue.

I got into firearms right before the pandemic, Nov. 2019. At that point, I bought a few boxes of Russian steel 7.62 Soviet/Rimmed, and got my 1851 like March/April 2020. At that point, I bought 1lb of pyrodex , 100 caps and 100 rounds. When I realized I like it more than cartridges, I bought another order exactly the same from Cabela's. I got "lucky" that half my order was "lost", so I ended up getting 2lbs and 200 caps, but only another 100 rounds.

And since then, caps have gone the way of the Dodo i regret not buying more, but I was on a budget. University is expensive, but I love it more than guns.

Since BP isn't popular in El Paso, I've pretty much given up on finding anything local, so now I'm in limbo. Oddly enough, I have a consistent supply of 7.62 tokarev, something I've only ever seen at gun shows.

I'd love to continue with black powder, but I feel like my 1851 may become a wall hanger at this point. That's the only reason I haven't sent it to @Jackrabbit1957 .

I feel like maybe everything except my Great Grandad's Marlin M60 will be a wall hanger.

Just my experience with arms in general. I'm really disheartened that I can't find more BP things.

I got into gun 4 months ago, i bought a 1911, then 2 weeks later i bought two 1851 Navy from Pietta, brass and steel. They were sitting in the store for 5 months according to the packaging stickers. Were made in 2020 as well. They were 44 cal, The cabelas i got them at had 3 more, a polished chrome looking one, another steel, and one rough aged purposly looking one. Over the last 3+ months, i havent seen this store get anymore in. And when i was there yesturday, they sold everything but the rough vintage looking one. So im just going out on a limb here and saying that in 1 year this store has had 6 of them, and they all sat until i bought two, and 2 more sold in 3 months. And in this time frame, they havent gotten any replacements. That display case is empty now, and has been empty for months.

I bought my brass 1851 for $180 btw, and my steel for $270. Honestly im surpised how cheap they are considering a 1873SAA "almost" go for $500.

This is almost making me wonder if i should go to the store tomorrow and buy this Pedersoli Hawken 50cal rifle, its in stock. on sale for $499 vs $630, and they have a promotion going.. if i spend $500 in store i get $50 in points, and 500 with my 2% is another 10$.. Sooo basically ill get the rifle for $440. No other store in 2 states has the gun either

We live in uncertain economic times. The Federal Reserve's policy of brrrrrrrrr! destroys the purchasing power or value of the dollar. On the other hand, when we do enter hyper-inflation, we will see a simultaneous inflation and deflation. Things in demand go up, up, up. Things no one wants goes down, down, down. Piano for a bag of potatoes or something similar like mentioned by Anna Eisenmenger (Diary of An Austrian Housewife)? Blackpowder firearms are a mixed bag. Most common people don't know how to use them like they would a modern pistol or revolver. Not that they can't learn, but I don't see a great demand for them unless its for self-defense by the unarmed. Beats flipping the bird to a home invader.

I've seen the same thing as Gobsauce at the local Wal-Mart's both in Benson and in Sierra Vista as far as black powder supplies are concerned. I think it will turn around eventually. Try contacting a local muzzleloader club, they can usually tell you where to get supplies.

One thing i have noticed is black powder supplies are on shelvs. Bass lro today had 7 100 #10 caps for sale for 12$ i bought 4. They had all sorts of sizes in lead balls. And TONS of pyrodex powder. Tons of patchs. Lube. Cleaning supplies. I actually havent had issues getting real black powder either.

Today i also got a 54 caliber hawken rifle. And this bass pro in maryland had 6 of them. 1 beat up display in 50 cal. 3 50 cal in the back and 2 54 cal in the back.

But my local cabelas. Never has percussion caps. Doesnt have any bp rifles and the handgun bp have been out of stock for awhile.

I bet itll take a year or more to get new inventory. The rifle i got was made in 2020 according to the stamp. And sane for my 1851 navy. I havent seen any 2021 stamps on guns on shelvs

I don't really expect the prices to ever get back to 2019 levels. Costs of materials, transportation and labor are unlikely to go down. I've been in the hobby long enough (and I'm old enough) to have the black powder firearms I want. These days I concentrate on having the components needed to shoot and maintain them: powder, caps, flints, molds to cast round ball, etc.

That doesn't stop me from keeping an eye open for bargains. :D

Funny i looked at the proof stampings on my brand new pedersoli Hawkens black powder rifle. And its stamped CP for 2016. The brass is tarnished and it has old oil on it. But the box was never opened. It had alot of dust on the box too. As well as the other 3 i had them open.

This was at bass pro in maryland. Which means the 5 hawkens rifles they have there are 5 years old. Somehow ???? No one was interested in them for 5 years ??? Thats weird.

I think its becase bass pro and cabelas are terrible with inventory. Online it said the 54 cal was out of stock in VA and Maryland. And th3y only had 1 50 cal in stock... but when i get there they had 2 54s and 3 50.

So i guess no one knows they have em so they just sit in the back.

Very weird how i bought a brand new but 5 year almost 6 year old rifle lol

You should seriously consider buying 5 pounds from Grafs or someone else. Maybe 3 of the GOEX and a couple of the olde Eynsford? It’s not that expensive and you’re set for a good bit of shooting,

Yea i bought 4 lbs fr9m grafs. The schuetzen kind. And i havent had issues with it. And so far ive gotten maybe 350 shots out of it and i finally opened the 2nd bottle the other day. I load 30 grains in my 1851 navy.

By the way. I know that you bought an Uberti but just In case anyone hasn't used Jedediah Starr before. J-Starr currently says they have limited stock of Pietta' 1858's steel frame 8" barrel. One is a Traditions/Pietta. the other a Pietta. I have used these guys before and had good service from them. They have about a week before they process the order. I think they have a small staff. Their site is not as fancy as Midway's but no big deal to me. They do answer emails but it might take a couple of days. hit or miss on time frame. You can also call them and leave a message. I would contact them before assuming that their inventory listed quantity is accurate. Here's a couple of snips of the Remington'. link: https://www.jedediah-starr.com/thumbnail.asp?offset=0&deep=1&cid=13

I know things kinda suck right now, but I don't think your Navy will ever be a wall hanger (though it would be a very pretty one).

Cabela's is just not a great source for BP stuff. You should be looking at Buffalo Arms, Graf's, Dixie, Jebediah Starr, Track of the Wolf, Midway, and a bunch of other stores that actually cater to that market better. I'm not going to say that it's been easy to find things the last year and a half, but with a little patience you can get what you want. And at least to me, it seems BP and accessories have become much easier to find the last few months.

Worse comes to worst, you can make literally everything you need to feed your '51 yourself, even the powder. I'm sure it's difficult and requires a lot of learning and experimenting, but there are people who do it.

@bear166

@woodnbow

The only reason I order from Cabela's is the shipping. If I ship to store, I don't pay shipping or even hazard for anything. My income isn't exactly disposable, I can't fork out the cash for 5lbs +of powder at once. Maybe someday it'll be feasible.

One of the reasons I’m not retired! How would I pay for the goodies? Plus, I think my wife is happier when I’m underfoot at home... if I had was limited to cabelas, I would do as you are, shoot triple 7 and never look back... welcome to one of the greatest shooting sports there is.

Well i just wanted to update this thread. I just checked online and all the local cabelas and bass pros. All have the sheriff and normal models of the 1851 navy and 1858 army piettas. All in brass. Steel and the shiney nickle versions. They also have the 1860s as well.

Visited the store near me and they have a display case full of them now.

And when i visited PA (im in va) to get a flint lock pistol and howdah pistol (shotgun) they had a disolay case full as well.

Maryland has muskets the brown bess and 4 more boxes of Hawkens rifles.

Nlack powder guns seem to be coming back in stock everywhere accross multiple state lines for me.

Unfortunatly ive spent way too much money the last 2 months. I wouldnt mind gettin an 1858 Army in brass and steel to match my 1851 navy. And the remingtons. But unfirtunatly i cant. Theyre affordable as well 250-300$.

And from what ive seen the lrices havent changed im reading threads from years ago that the 1851 navy were always 200$ -269 for thr brass and steel.. and so forth

The Bass Pro purchase of Cabelas ruined Cabelas IMHO. Cabelas' website is absolute Trash now. That being said, I'm glad to see you are still seeing Cabelas in your area carrying C&B revolvers.

I still keep checking this website, from time to time, to see if they have inventory on percussion caps. They don't. I bought 5000 Remington #10 caps from them a few years ago before the Covid Nonsense.

Unfortunately, I think time past are just that...past. Yes, things will "stabilize" to the point that BP guns and components will become available again, but not for the boon prices we saw a decade ago. Ever.
