Never really tried shooting my single-action .45 Colts quickly. Decided to be brave and video my first attempt.

Much harder than it looks! I think I'll stick with semi-autos for self-defense, lol.

^^^^^^Yes, much easier and faster.
Also allows for my mind to begin to acquire some sort of site picture during the process because I don't have to roll the gun backwards to reach the hammer.

Howdy

A couple of things. In addition to cocking the hammer with the off hand thumb, keep the pistol on target for all the shots. Raise the pistol up, get the sight picture, cock the hammer and fire. Repeat four times. Do not lower the gun until you are done shooting.

With all due respect, that video of the guy fanning his 22 is not Cowboy Action Shooting. Fanning is forbidden in CAS, his pistol has been heavily modified for fanning, and other than kids, everybody has to shoot pistols of at least 32 caliber.

Now, just for fun, here is a cowboy who loads his ammunition with Black Powder. He has to shoot kind of slow because the smoke obscures his targets. You will notice he shifts his feet while shooting his rifle in order to see the targets past the smoke. And he shoots his Colts one handed. They do recoil a bit, so a little bit of time is lost bringing the pistols down from recoil for every shot. Actually, this guy does not care how fast he shoots, he just wants to hit all the targets.

I was wondering about the "bobbing" up and down motion. My practice is that the gun recoils upward and the hammer is cocked as the gun comes down and when the sights are aligned again the hammer falls. I do not cock the revolver with the off hand.

You say "tomahto" I say "maters."

Good catch Bob.

This guy likes to say he cocks the hammer as the gun comes down from recoil, but the video shows that is not true. He actually cocks the hammer when the revolver is down, shifting his grip a little bit in the process.

Here is my pal Wild Bill Blackerby shooting a stage. He shoots a little bit faster. Notice he has to duck down under the smoke cloud after his last shot with the shotgun to see if the target fell down. Wild Bill is shooting his pistols Gunfighter style. Both pistols are out at once and he alternates pistols for each shot. Yeah, he doesn't 'bob' his pistols for each shot. I think I counted two misses.
