My AK is Done

I do like the P-64. I've shot mine quite a bit doing the "draw from concealment, first shot on target (ten yards) under two seconds" drill. It's probably the most concealable pistol I have, that I would still have faith in although I generally prefer something more powerful and a bit larger. In case the range or distance of the "encounter" opens up to greater than the official, standard, 7 yard shoot-out distance. For close encounters I think its a very good gun, and carry it once in a while.

But, I really can see the logic of having a P-64 or a Mak on the battle-rattle "kit". :) Of course, I also see the logic of a larger, more combat-ready pistol also. I think the idea is a good compromise between no pistol in order to lighten the load, or to carry more rifle ammo at the same total weight of the gear, and a bigger heavier combat pistol in case of a rifle malfunction in the middle of a close-up, root hog or die shootout. ?

Dang. Inspired by JCF1911, I began searching for a molle compatible holster for my P-64, and I can't find anything other than holsters for medium to large frame pistols. They all measure 8", the P-64 runs 6" in length. What's up with that? Or are ya supposed to stuff the bottom of the holster with pressure bandages for smaller pistols? Cut the end off and sew it up? Double dang. I was on a roll.

I’m a big fan of the makarov, and while I don’t really enjoy shooting the P64 it’s still a decent gun. The Makarov does fit if you’re looking for a period correct (or in this case more nationally correct) setup, but it’s not really a “middle ground” when compared to other pistols.

For example, looking at loaded weights, a Glock 19 is a whole 1oz heavier than a Makarov, and that’s with almost double the ammo (which itself is both slightly more powerful and generally more readily available). Glocks are also much easier to use when wearing gloves, which if you’re using an AK for anything serious, you should absolutely be wearing gloves (AKs get hot!).

Both guns are almost the exact same weight as a single loaded 7.62 AK mag (which do get heavy, especially when carrying a combat load) so I can understand the desire to shave extra weight, but if you want to carry a pistol there’s almost no weight difference between carrying a Makarov and a modern polymer framed gun.

That said, I think the OP’s setup is very cool and will serve him well. While the Makarov wouldn’t be my first choice for a purely defensive setup, it makes for a very interesting setup.

I’m using an RS Regulate 301 with AKML adapter for an Aimpoint H2 micro dot. The dot cowitnesses with the iron sights nicely. Really a great setup that many will say is the best available.

I'm leaning towards the Arsenal SM 13 with a Sig Romeo4t 1.) Because I like the reticle choices. 2.) 100k hour battery life. 3.) 1/2 the price of an Aimpoint. Until I order it though, there's still always a chance & say "screw it, it's only money" & put a CompM5 on mine.

Is yours a Sam7R or one of the older models? Mine's a SA-M7S

Nice, I have an SM13 I’m not using if you’re interested.

Its a new SAM7R and from what I understand it’s Bulgarian made all the way except the fire control groups, as they needed to up the parts count for 922r compliance.
