Blue dot ?

I would not recommend Blue Dot for either 9MM or 45ACP. Too slow for both in all bullet weights. Only good for some magnum shotgun loads and not much else. Not a fan of Blue Dot but I have tried it in .357 and 44 Magnum.

Flaming dirt
To slow
Spiky

Even though there may be data for it, there are much better powders

Actually BlueDot is a very acceptable powder for both cartridges, depending on bullet weight. I’ve used it in my .45s to very good effect with the 200 XTP. Speer #15 lists BlueDot as giving the highest velocities with 115 and 124 grain bullets in the 9 mm. It is certainly not “too slow”. There are many good powders for both cartridges, but don’t be afraid to use BD.

If I had a No.7 load I really liked and couldn't find any - or if I were a fan of IMR-800X and wanted something in the same general category - I'd be all over working up loads in Blue Dot. As it is, I use it for "warm" .44Spl loads, very "warm" .45AutoRim loads, and a few other choice large-case cartridges with lubed hardened lead bullets. Blue Dot really shines (IMO) where you can get good case fill without compressing the load but it isn't the easiest powder to get along with. In .45AR for my Smith 1917 it's the one powder that lets me push a heavy lead bullet up close to 1000fps without gas checks, excess pressure or a massive flame-thrower effect. A 200gr. SWC with 10.3gr. of Blue Dot in that nice long .45 barrel is a flat-out stomper.

But you have to go slow working with Blue Dot in my experience. .3gr. +/- can mean the difference between a puff load and flattened primers.

Well, at least you can find BD. I haven't come across any in nearly 2 years. I've used it for 135 grainers in 9mm but it wasn't accurate enough for me. I don't load 45ACP so can't help there. BD is my favorite 10mm powder!

Hi...
I have been using Blue Dot as my preferred powder for general purpose loads in my .357Magnum revolvers for 35-40 years. I don't find it particularly dirty and it provides fine accuracy in at least 7 or 8 different revolvers with commercial cast coated 158gr LSWC.
I use H110 for full power loads in .357Magnum.
