you have 500 dollars, what rifle are you buying.

I would have to bank the money for next year: The only rifle I want now that fits the OP's criteria is really a barrel, stock, and fore end to convert my T/C G1 Contender pistol to a 30-30 carbine. It runs a bit more than the specified amount.

As a fellow Illinois resident, I felt this!

One workaround to the IL rules for deer hunting that I learned of, you can set up an AR Pistol in 300 Blackout and use a single shot magazine insert and it is legal for firearm season. The IL Conservation Police confirmed the legality last year on Facebook, actually. If/when I get into firearm deer season, I may very well try that route. Right now I'm focused on gearing up for archery season, I'll see how I like that before investing in the AR Pistol setup (also want to wait out the current question on pistol braces before investing.

I have no idea about Illinois but here in minnesota you can use a pistol in our shotgun zone, including an AR pistol. If I lived in shotgun zone I would get a 15” TC encore in 338 federal or something similar and put a pistol brace on it.

I got a used Weatherby sub moa (howa) for under $500 with a better stock and base/rings.

Would pick it over the Ruger’s, Mossberg’s I have shot and the Savage’s I own.
We have four Vanguards in the family. I have a .243 and 30-06 with wood(Sporter), son has a synthetic 30-06 and daughter has a Compact .243.

I’ll take a Vanguard over a RAR, Axis, 783, AB3 and XPR. I haven’t seen a Patriot in person but everything else being equal I’d take one over all the others I mentioned excluding a Vanguard. The reason is the Patriot doesn’t have the tiny loading/ejection port the others do which I abhor.

For me it was a new Savage Model 11 Hog Hunter in 308.
If I get another $500 rifle it will be a Ruger American.

Imagine a savage axis with a traditional ejection port and a little better stock.

I'd probably shop around the used rifles for $500. If it had to be new the best budget rifle right now looks to be the T/C Compass Utility model. That plus however much Vortex scope the leftover money ($125-150) will buy.

Honestly though all the cheap rifles (Mossberg ATR, Savage Axis, Ruger American) work well enough to get the job done. The only ones I specifically didn't like were the Remington ones and they're gone now (I don't think the new owner intends to bring back those particular models either).

I hope you are right on Remington. The 710/770s was certainly inexpensive but left a lot to be desired. The market will certainly not be diminished by their absence. Any of the other markers budget lines seem to be perfectly serviceable.

An appearance challenged pre-‘64 Winchester Model 94 in .30-30. Still one of the best in deer woods, ammunition available everywhere, will not deprecate.
Amen to that. I'd be happy as a lark to to get the chance to take bear and elk with my 94, though is a post 64. And as second choice a marlin 336. I got a buddy that bought a marlin for $350 only a few months ago. Lucky dawg.

Other options include, a pre accutrigger savage 110, in 30-06, for about 350, leaving money for a used weaver dash 1 scope or a leupold M8 scope.

Perhaps a Remington 760 in 06.

one of my local gun stores had a 760 in 270 for about 450 if i remember correctly. Had i not just bought a lightweight storm 110 in 270 i would have considered picking it up.

Hi...
$500???
Probably a down payment on a used wood stocked Sako, Win M70 or Rem M700 in some caliber from .243, .257Roberts, .270, .30/06 up to 7mmMag or .300Magnum.
I don't have the greatest interest in synthetic stocked rifles(although I do own one).
I do like nice wood and blued steel rifles.

I already have more than I need, so a $500 expenditure would have to be a really good deal on a fine used rifle. A couple of years ago I purchased this Remington 700 BDL in .243 with a hard case and some ammo in a private sale for $425. That's the kind of deal I'm talking about.

I'll hit up my local pawn shop and look for a scoped and mounted Savage 110. Not too picky about caliber.

If I had no gun and was buying my first rifle, with a $500 budget, with the knowledge I already have, I'd quite possibly buy an AR-15 with a 5rd magazine for hunting. For this I would probably try to find an 18"-20" bbl upper. I realize right at the moment, $500 might not cover it but not that long ago it would.

I would also consider a Ruger American Predator in 5.56/.223, not an ideal medium/large game cartridge but will do the job if you do yours. Versatile, inexpensive and accurate in either case....
