I always felt Cooper wanted a Compact 308 internal mag Scout-308 bolt as his concept with minimal to go wrong. My Ruger with a Claw is Reliable and I don’t need Multi Box mag repeat fire. It may not be exactly what I usually see as a scout, I’m still contemplating a Forward mounted 2x scope- yet a aperture sight will probably be the only secondary sight it gets.
Now my 1968 Remington 660….. Well, That series of rifles has certainly attributed to the conception of the Scout rifle. Super accurate, Basic and rugged. Again a 308 with plenty of power and Commonality to be a formidable Rifle for a multitude of uses.
My intention is to have my good local Smith make a front mount that extends from rear buckhorn to front scope base holes. Don’t feel like drilling into that classy beauty. I’ll seek out a nice leather shooter sling and a gloss finished Leupold 2x. Plus I’ll need a Williams aperture sight of course and I’ll use the Warne detachment rings I already have. I just need to finish that project.
My main attraction to the forward mount scope is - 90% of the time I’ll be Carrying! the rifle and that balance point is important. When your in the field and use a Rifle ,that’s important .Plus I don’t really need a higher power scope- most all times I keep it at 2.5, not 8. I’ve shot great groups at 2.5x power out to 200yards.
My point is …. A Practical use Multi Utility rifle. Hunting, Target on run, Compact, Powerful enough, some distance, Optic detachment with back up for precaution, Defence, Simple to use, simple to clean… Rifle.
In my opinion… that was Coopers 1st idea with the Scout Rifle and it seems good to me. The rest have become a addendum to it, if you will.
