My uncle brought this to me, and doesnt want it. I recall seeing it 20 years ago in my grandpa's collection of stuff. Thought it was some gimmick type thing. Well i started researching and it turns out to be an innovative early red dot type sight. The tube transmits no image, just a dot on a black background, and both eyes are used to superimpose the red dot onto the target, seen with the off-eye.

The exact same early model was used by the armed forces on a raid in Vietnam on Son Tay prison. Seems this one is around a 1970 mfg

Any info anyone has, I would appreciate it. And yes, a variation of these were used in the original starwars movies.

All i have is the sight, no base or rings

Unfortunately, there is really no way to know definitely when these were made. I've seen a lot of serial numbers, and drawing some deductions can say yours was made in late 1969, or more likely 1970. With the importers, again really impossible to say without the box. Being that it is in the US however, and seems to have been for some time, Normark was the only commercial importer so the vast majority of sights in the US would have come though them. Your sight appears to be the most common model, called a SP16R. If you send some photos of the red tip at a couple angles that could provide some more info.

I had one of these for a while. I knew what it was when I saw it at the gunshow...a guy guy had two or three for sale pretty cheap. It came in a plain, cream colored cardboard box with no label other than a serial number sticker. It was fitted in a foam liner.
Mine had the frosted, not clear, dome.
I ran it on a car15 clone I used to have. It worked pretty well, once you got used to it.

Appreciate the info! First time I saw it was probably 2001, as a loose "scope". Last time I saw it was in 2004 when my grandpa passed and it went to my uncle, as I couldn't see through it and though it was junk. Been in a box since. No clue when my grandpa got it.

Armson still makes an OEG. Theirs uses both fiber optic and tritium. I had a couple in the past (mid 90's) and they were the first "red dot" I used.

They work OK. I was never happy with the transition between the FO and tritium, as the tritium was fine/small and your eyes needed to be adjusted to the dark for it to work. The FO needs light, and the tritium dark, so transitions werent real good.

The concept is solid, and I still use it with my Aimpoints by closing the front covers. That way you dont have to fiddle with the brightness when going through the transitions. Set the dot to a comfortable level in the lower light, and its still easily see in bright daylight.

I've replaced the tritium in one of the original OEGs thanks to a kit a fellow was offering.

This one isnt one with tritium in it. I did try a trick I read about, using a flashlight to "power" the fiber optic and it certainly works.

My old Para LDA has tritium sights. They were awesome. Now they are just brown dots lol!

Sure thing, happy to help. Made somewhat of a study of them so always nice to meet someone with interest in them!

Interest has gotten the better of me! Im building an XM177/CAR15/GAU-5 clone to put the OEG on. Parts all ordered, including an A1 upper receiver, 11.5" barrel, 4.65" "replica" moderator, and two position CAR15 stock.

Ill post pics when its done

If you want to try a similar concept done a little differently and with a smaller footprint, the See-All open sight is about like if you took an OIG and cut the top half off.

(I thought I had a few pictures of mine showing the sight picture, but I can’t find them now. Google has lots of images so here’s one of the Gen 2 which I have)

You get an ambient light or tritium lit (depending on the specific model) black chevron with a green background magnified in a small half lense and the top of the chevron is your point of aim. The bottom of your target is occluded but the point of impact and above is visible.

I have mine on my weirdo 20” AR and so far I like it.

Dang you AK, you might have just cost me some money! Thanks for the heads up!

The clone is close to finished. Had to lengthen the "moderator" as the assembled barrel length was only 15.25". Its now a legal 16.5", though i still need to weld it to the barrel for compliance. Good thing I own a lathe!

Mock up prior to length mods, and not with the 2 position stock

Making me want to get started on my Son Tay Raider carbine I've been itching for.
