I have a suppressor in jail and I'm looking for a woods friendly rifle to put it on but coming up with no really great option.

What I'm looking for:

  • Light since I'll sling it in the woods and the suppressor will be adding weight as well.
  • Barrel 16" to 20" for the same reason
  • 308 to be able to practice with cheaper ammo
  • Threaded barrel pref 5/8 24
  • Detachable magazine. It's a felony in my state to have a loaded rifle in a vehicle, so mags are convenient to pop in and out if you are getting in and out

Closest I could find is Ruger American Predator, which is a bit of a cheap rifle but maybe I could upgrade the stock. Bergara Ridgeline is almost what I need but no magazine, the rest of their line seems pretty heavy. Tikka CTR but it's a bit heavy and currently nowhere to be found. Remington AAC but they went bust.

I could buy a longer barrel and chop, or thread something, but then I'm voiding warranty if it new, etc

Suggestions? I can wait for stuff to come into stock since it's probably at least another six months before the suppressor gets out of jail.

I just bought a Remington 700 model# rem700-84293

It is 22" inches rather than the 16-20 you are looking for but it is threaded and had a detachable mag. A bit on the heavier side (8.75lbs).

Unfortunately due to registration requirements where I live it is in paperwork jail for now.

It sounds like you’re describing the Ruger Gunsite Rifle? Options for forward or traditional scope mounting. Threaded barrel - 16 inches for blued, 18 for stainless. Detachable AICS-style mags - cheap and plentiful since Magpul started making them. Your choice of laminate or synthetic stock. MOA accurate with GMM 168gr.

How about the Browning BAR Mark III. It has everything you want except possibly the threaded barrel. Im not sure if they offer the threaded barrel but even if they dont you can have that done at a good gun shop.

Yep. 6.2 lbs. for the synthetic stock option. It comes with receiver mount scope rings, too. Add a 3 round or 5 round magazine depending on preferences.

Seems like the Ruger Scout is getting pricey though, just like most other Ruger firearms.

The Sig Cross maybe? And I think Savage had some suppressor ready options.....ill look when i can sit at the computer.
Hog Hunter but it has a cheap plastic stock and I couldn't find good options to upgrade the stock without making the rifle heavy.

Gunsite Scout is an option if I can put a conventional scope, not interested in the forward mount.

Of course nowhere to be found but I can wait a bit.

For some reason Ruger no longer shows the 308 American Predator available with AI style magazines. That is what I have and think it is your Huckleberry. Don't judge the stock, it does just fine and there is no need to upgrade. You can easily get the parts from Ruger to convert the flush style magazines to AI magazines. You then have the option of using 3,5, or 10 round mags.

Magpul makes a version that holds 5 rounds out of the box for states with mag capacity limits for hunting. But there are tabs on the bottom of the follower designed to break off making it 6 rounds. Those are my favorites. I get 6+1 with a mag that doesn't extend so far below the stock to be an issue.

I've looked hard at the Ruger Scout rifle and like it. But I can buy 2 of the Predators and mount scopes on both of them for what the Scout plus one scope would cost.

Savage Hog Hunter with an upgraded stock/ bottom metal?

Ruger American Predator with an upgraded stock.

Rem700 with a chopped/threaded barrel would be the direction I'd go.

What do you want to do with it? (besides sling it in the woods) You say the Ruger American was too cheap... but it IS light. the CTR is too heavy, but is also a MUCH better weapon. Now personally, I don't see how an 8 pound .308 is heavy. After all, more weight helps to control recoil anyway. Lightweight means cheap plastic stocks like the Ruger American, or the Savage Axis, or very expensive aftermarket composite ones. If it need not be new, you could find a used rifle, and build it how you want, but if I were looking for a new .308, I'd go with the CTR in a heartbeat.

It will be a general purpose rifle that I will use for long range target shooting as well as hunting. Those are both woods activities where I am since the range near me tops out at 200 yards, but if I hike into the mountain I can find places for longer shots.

As for weight I'll be adding on a 1lb suppressor at the end of the barrel plus an optic so it's going to gain a couple pounds, I'm not worried about recoil at that point.

Seekins Havak Element. 21” barrel with aluminum receiver and bolt body, using steel lug bushing block and bolt head, ultralight injection molded carbon fiber stock, carbon fiber factory DBM with AI footprint.

CTR is high on my list because it has everything I'm looking for but it's a bit heavy.

I wish Tikka would chop 2" off their new Veil Alpine/Wideland rifle, that would be perfect. Seriously tempted by it but I think a 6" suppressor at the end of a 22" barrel is getting a bit unwieldy.

If CTR was in stock right now I probably would have bought one and been grumbling about the weight.

Sig Cross. Friend has one, and a rare gun I am actually jealous of. Feather light, tackdriver, easy to run, easy to shoot. I may have to buy one and I am already totally happy with my bolt gun for what I do.

If you hate the chassis look: well, they tend to be the lightest guns. Traditional stocks, even in snazzy plastics, have to have a lot of material to have strength in the shape they are.

Na. He ruled out the Ruger GSR when he said “light”.

I’ve been looking really hard at the CVA Cascade at my LGS. It‘a a good looking rifle and feels much better than the cheap options from Ruger and Savage. Meets all of your requirements and comes with a solid accuracy guarantee. I’m probably going to pick one up in a couple weeks.

I went down this road a few years ago and ended up with a Savage Hog Hunter as I also wanted sights on the rifle along with threaded and light. Now, I don't have an issue with the blind mag so it worked for me.

Big Ruger fan but the Gunsite was a lot more $$ and heavy compared to the Hog Hunter.

Kimber Hunters now have a threaded barrel, 5.5 lbs, available in 308, detachable box magazine. It is a very light, well balanced rifle.

I mean if cost isn't an issue there are some makers of lightweight ar-10 builds. CMMG has some options in the 7lbs range for around $2k and if you are feeling particularly spendy NEMO ARMS will make you one out of titanium for a cool $100k

These are not really serious suggestions but just ya know throwing out ideas.
