I've been using RMR 124 gr JHP "Multi Purpose Bullet" for a while now, but I have only checked accuracy and velocities. I haven't any water jugs or gel, for other tests. Has anyone done any expansion/performance testing on this particular bullet? I emailed RMR and they mentioned a min of 1,150 fps for expansion with an optimum velocity of 1,200 fps (which I'll never reach fromm my 2" bbl, non +P, gun!)...

So far I really like this bullet, using Nosler data and just got 250 more this morning...
 
My nonscientific testing led me to look for a better sd bullet. I bought a box of xtps that I used 50 for testing and 50 for a box to keep. 5.0 grains of hp38 at 1.100 was not a load I would recommend but did not expand the bullet to my satisfaction. They are a great target bullet and I will continue to order and use them in that role.

I just received 1k of RMR's MPR bullets and will be following this thread.

A co-worker has said that he's had good expansion with these but the only detail I know that he is using HS-6 powder; no idea what weight charge, velocity or firearm/s were used.

(His father has been recently hospitalized and I haven't been able to talk with him)

I plan on trying Alliant Power Pistol and/or BE-86 but have other powders available (Unique, 231, Blue Dot and a little Universal and Accurate #5)

One day I hope to pick up some Ramshot True Blue and Sillouette as they should be good choices for performance loads as well.
 
I use RMR 124gr MPR's for my range ammo and reload 124 gr Speer Gold Dots for my carry ammo. After the Gold Dots have been in a hot car stored in a gun safe for a while I will shoot them up on my outdoor range. Although not a very scientific evaluation the MPR's seem to be every bit as destructive as the Gold Dots.
 
The RMR 124 MPR bullet is what I use for plinking/target in my 357 SIG .. They will expand at the 1400+ fps I load them ...but I carry Hornady XTP 124 or Barnes(DPX) all copper ...

I'll have to chronograph some HS 6 loads I have for a conversion 9mm barrel I have for my SIG .... then water jug test them...

The Berry's Hybrid Hollow Points are supposed to work really well at lower velocities. May look at those as well. Cheap, too.
 
IMO expansion means nothing with the .223 being shot from an AR platform. The military uses a FMJ bullet and they work just fine. The bullet is designed to tumble and that's what causes the body damage. Accuracy is most important and you said your current load is accurate. Stick with it and don't worry about testing.
 
I use RMR 124gr RN & 124gr JHP MPR rounds with good target accuracy and Ramshot True Blue powder. I think they shoot better than I do when compared to my son's shot groups!

I'm looking forward to trying BE86 and Sport Pistol with them when they become more available.

You won't go wrong using RMR bullets! Good people and easy to work with!

How is .223 performance relevant to 9mm bullet selection?
 
When tooling is brand new, the MPR will expand at 1050-1100 fps. However, the petal cutters wear pretty quick and are extremely expensive at $200 each. We decided a little while ago that customers would rather have a bullet that is priced well but will still expand at 1150-1200 than an expensive bullet that will expand at 1050. If we had to change out the petal cutter every 200k bullets it would make them more expensive in tooling cost as well as machine down time. That being said, the MPR out performs the XTP in pretty much every way. The gold dot is definitely a better bullet from a short barrel. That's what I would use. BUT, give us some time. I'm working on another version of the MPR with a little larger hole and a mechanically crimped jacket. It's going to open at 1000 fps or maybe even less. We've made some hand punches and tested them out and they expand almost too well. We are still a ways away from introducing it. We've started tooling our own machines and we just bought $500k in new CNC's, turning centers, and a wire edm so that we could make anything we need ourselves. We also have some pretty cool plans for making some bolt action rifles and other various gun parts. Also lathe turned bullets with stupid high BC's. It's all gonna take some time but keep your fingers crossed that we get it done.

Not when it comes to accuracy.
The xtp is not 2.5 times as accurate. I'll take a 10 cent bullet that shoots as good as the rmr bullet does every time. A 10 cent bullet vs a 26 cent bullet is not near the same price bracket. I also dont expect them to perform as good as a premium sd bullet when sold as a multi purpose round. I cant afford to shoot expensive bullets and rmr allows me to stay in the game.
 
Plenty of Sig V-Crown bullets out there for SD load development. I loaded up some 124’s with BE-86 for my P365 and Hellcat with great results in regards to accuracy. Have no way to test expansion though.
 
Dunno about compariable accuracy, but I discovered RMR bullets several years ago. After loading some min level loads I notice the 124 gr JHP looked remarkably like a Nosler 124 gr JHP so I used Nosler data and having only a magazine "pack", 8" of magazines duct taped together, performance was identical as far as I could tell. I would think performance (expansion) from my loads in my 4" and 5" barrel pistols to be more than adequate. Looking foerward to a new and improved RMR JHP!
 
+1 on RMR similar configuration & size to Nosler 124gr JHP. I utilize their data as well coupled with Ramshot 8.0 True Blue's load range. Works well for me.

All bullets expanded very well but they tended to separate from their jacket.

I haven’t purchased a chronograph yet (I will soon) so I can’t verify the velocity of each shot. However I think it’s somewhat reasonable to assume that the 5.0 grain tests were traveling around 1,000 fps out of my G43x (3” barrel). Again, it expanded well but separated from the jacket.

However, I don’t buy these bullets to make carry ammunition. But it’s nice to know I have several thousand hollow points if needed in an emergency.

This is common when shot into water. When shooting into gel or into animals the jackets stay together. Live Life's picture shows what to expect when shot into stuff that's more meaty.

Sign me up for a bunch! The current 124s are great, but 1150-120 from a short barrel is a monster :)
