I have a stock Mossberg 590 Shockwave and have been shooting it. I noticed it shoots about a foot high at 10 yards and I believe the reason is the action is higher than the barrel, so when I aim with the beed I have to aim lower than if I had a rail along the barrel like a hunting shotgun would have. I have watched a few videos and I use the technique of pushing my hands together as well as pulling with the handle (Gabe Suarez).

I got this gun to fill the nitch for when I cannot take a long gun, but I can take the smaller Shockwave. I knew this would be harder to aim than a full sized shotgun but right now it is not seeming to be very

practical. I would like some way to aim more reliably. My purpose for this would be to be able to aim reasonably well at a human attacker within 20 yards or to stop a large wild hog that was charging me. My 10mm pistol can fulfill those roles as well but I was thinking if I can learn to use the Shockwave effectively, having a shotgun would give me an extreme advantage in some situations.

One thing I like about the stock version of the gun is it’s very simple. As-is I can stash it in different places. I can abuse it and there is no large red dot or sight to catch on clothing or other things.

Installing the right red dot would still make it durable and would give me all the advantages of a red dot (fastest acquisition I believe) but the red dot would make the profile less slim and I wouldn’t feel as comfortable giving it abuse.

Large Tall sights might help but would snag on things … perhaps not enough to not get them but that’s a consideration.

If possible putting a rib on the barrel would fix the issue with it shooting high but I think I would need a gunsmith to do that for me.

Perhaps I can just put in some more work shooting by feel or learning to adjust for the height disparity and then with effort I will be able to shoot accurate enough with it with no modifications?

Thanks in advance for any tips.

I have a Crimson Trace Lasersaddle on my Shockwave. Makes all the difference. I can shoot it from the hip, using push/pull out in front, or any other way as long as I can see the laser on the target. Highly recommend.

The laser saddle looks like a neat addition. It aint cheap. Ok. Who wants a cheap piece of electronics on a shotgun?
Then there is this: gun time, practice……$200 buys a whole bunch of shotshells. (And if you load your own…a whole big bunch of shells). With enough practice, shooting from the hip can become second nature and you don’t need a laser.

Definitely true. I practiced this a bit many years ago, got good at it, and I can still whale on a 5-gallon bucket hanging and swinging at 15 yards. It's fun, and useful. :)

I use a Burris fast fire on a .22 charger for anti raccoon action and have knocked it on all sorts of crap in the dark. It's not much worse for the wear.

Nice, quick and bright enough to acquire with the 400 lumen search light on the automatic setting.

My complaints are that the protective good is a little wobbly, the button requires that you really dig your nail into it, the battery is a pita to install, and the set screw worked loose a couple of times at first but I can't discount that I was playing with the it. As well as a mild starburst effect that is 100% my eyes.

But if I were going to add a shockwave to the critter gitters I would probably stick a red dot on it without hesitation.

Member @BrobeeBiter made a couple youtube videos (username brobee223) that completely changed my impression of that firearm. He recommends XS Sights Big Dot, and I agree with him.

I've read others who agree, the bead sight seems to aim at a different point than expected. Hickock45 didn't seem to have an issue with it tho. I agree a red dot would stick up a bit and isn't really KISS, I have seen sights with a ghost ring rear that mounts to the rail you can install.
