Hey .350 Rem Mag and .35 Whelen Guys, Bullet selection?

I'm sincerely curious..., why are you thinking of changing a successful load merely because you're going for whitetail? KS has some rather large whitetail to boot. I would think, but don't know, which is why I'm offering the question, that having found a 225 grain Nosler bullet loading that works well, that you'd simply keep that accurate load, as you haven't mentioned a need to mitigate recoil or any other factor than there not being Elk. I suppose having another load for a different bullet might be an advantage in lean times...,

I run a 180 hotcore. It worked well last season without excessive damage. I sold on them.

I have a Whelen. Accubonds have been running darn close in price to partitions lately. If you are looking for low cost effective bullets for deer, I think the 200 gr interlock will suit you well. Hornady loads them to 2900 FPS in their Supurperformance ammo in 35 Whelen. You should be able to reproduce that in the mag.

Both that Hornady load and the federal fusion load produce some serious recoil in a single shot Whelen.
They are actually making the claimed velocity.

I’ve killed a fairly large pile of hogs with my Ruger M-77 in .358. I use 225 Gr Barnes TSX at a velocity of about 2450 FPS. I’ve never had an issue killing even the largest hogs with that combo.

I've been shooting 220 and 250 Grn.bullets over H335 powder using CCI 250 mag primers. I bought a couple moulds 286 and 294 Grn. that I want to work up a load with. I'm shooting 35 Whelen built on a Ruger tang safety M77 left hand twist 1 in 10. I've only been shooting it out to 100 yds but plan to stretch that out as soon as the snow goes away up here.
I'm going to watch this post for sure.

A bolt action .358 win has always been on my want-to-have list

Same here. And I’ve been watching auction sites for a while, but most everything was a grand and up. About a year ago, there was a run of Ruger Predators made in 358 Win and they were selling for about $500 and went quick.

Tonight I just put together and head spaced a bolt action 358 Win. I bought a new Savage XP in 243, took the barrel off and put on a ER Shaw 358 Win barrel from Midway. All in, scoped, I have $710 into it. Will be interesting to find out how it shoots in a month or so. 5 shot with one in the chamber.

I had a 35 Whelen and a 350 RM both and use the 200 gr Remington RN in both for hogs and deer. Trick is to shoot behind the shoulder, blows the contents of the lung cavity out the backside, no meat loss. I built a dual grip, similar to the Richards for the 350, it tames the felt recoil quite a bit, about 25%. I traded the 35 Classic off for another Classic and I am going to build another Whelen on an old 30-06 Rem 700 action I already have and will run a dual grip for it. The new 1-14 SS 358 barrel is suppose to arrive tomorrow.

I pretty much only use 225 and 250 grain NPs in my 673 Guide rifle in .350 Rem Mag. I usually use the 225 for deer and the 250 for elk, but I doubt there is much difference to the animal. I still have about 5 boxes of each and 500 pieces of brass. I stocked up years ago.

I have a 1.5-5x Vari-X III on it. I don’t think I have shot an elk farther away than 50 yards with it. I’ve had them DRT or run less than 20 yards. Never lost one.

Good luck with your load, whatever you end up with.

My set up is similar, but with the Swarovski 1.25-4 in Warne QD mounts. Everything I've shot with .225 Nolser partitions or 225 Sierras hasn't gone far, nor required a follow-up.

I just bought another set of Warne QD rings to mount an "extra" Leupold VX3 2.5-8x36 to add a little versatility to the setup. I love the reticle on the 1.25-4x for close fast work, but it's a little thick for distance and obscures quite a bit of the TGT. The center dot is 2MOA

I'm thinking of using the .350 as a back-up for a guided elk hunt next year. I was surprised (the hard way) to learn that Warne widened the bases and rings on these. This M7 is the older 3 screw that required a 1 piece base, the old bases were pretty thin and didn't obstruct too much of the loading port. Based on the new 1" rings I received the new bases must be almost twice the thickness.

So now I'm in for a ring/base "upgrade". I'm dropping the gun of WED to have a smith add the 4th hole and I'll switch to 2 piece bases and get another set of new model 30mm rings for the Swarovski. I'll probably zero the Leupold for the 200grn Hornady "deer" bullets and keep the Swarovski zero'd for the 225s.

Quick follow up, looks like the 200 grn Hornady Interlock is going to work!

MV is right at 2832 from my Labradar at 54 degrees. I dropped it down 3 clicks, 1 left, then shot steel at 220 and 307. With TAC I should be able to get a little more out of it....but it's good enough for .gov work as is. So now I've got my "medium range" deer load done. Really good news is I've got 150 of the bullets left....

Dave,

I'd like to come up with a cheaper load to practice and hunt with if possible. I'll most likely just use the .350 to shoot a couple does anyway, keeping my .270 or .260s as my primary "buck" guns. The .350 is set up for timber, although I'm thinking of getting VX3HD 2.5-8x for it, in addition the the Swarovski. Practicing with and sending 225NPs through does is kind of a waste ($$). While the recoil in the M7 is manageable, the 200s would be nicer to shoot. Also as you pointed out, these days multiple loads with different bullets can be a blessing. I've done pretty well keeping a good stockage of my primary hunting bullets in .223, .260, .270, .308 and even 8mm (a lifetime worth if only checking zeros and hunting), but I've fallen short on the .358.
The speer 180 flat nose works well on Whitetail in my Whelen.

Interesting, are you down-loading them?? My understanding was they're designed for the 35Rem. Speer does list them for the .350 and it does look like a couple places have them in stock.

It is only going 2550. It wasn't a purposely reduced load.
CFE223 was listed at 3000 fps. I had one night to work up a load to hunt. So I shot a pressure ladder to the max listed charge. Then I tried 3 at the max load and got 7/8" at 130 yards. I called it good since I'm hunting brush country.
After killing a deer, I chronographed it at 2550. The exit was about the size of my thumb after breaking both shoulders.

I tried them in my Whelen, but even downloaded to 2600 the meat loss was horrendous. I am now using either Hornady or core- locs they are pretty much interchangeable and both shoot to same POI. Good hunting.

That's what I was afraid of....THANKS for confirming.

The 200 Core-Locs appear to be in the unobtanium realm, maybe, just maybe, Remington Ammo will offer a run someday.

I was looking for the Barnes 200 Grn TTX-FB, but it looks to be discontinued. They now offer 180s and 225s. The Barnes 180 TTX-FB might be the way to go IF someone's looking for a lighter .350 bullet to use on game.
