It’s not difficult to imagine what a couple of older guys sitting in front of a table of 1911’s will have to say about RDS’s.

My only issue with Red Dots, aside from more bulk in a concealed carry pistol is the same as a laser sight. Batteries have a way of failing at the worst possible moment, regardless of how diligent you are at changing out batteries before they go bad. Just one more thing to go wrong.

There was once an electrically illuminated handgun sight set. Before I had ever heard of an LED, maybe it used grain of wheat bulbs like the Oxford Illuminated Gun Sight. There was a lamp under a red ramp insert and another in kind of a bustle to shine on the white outlined rear notch. The battery was buried in the grip and fine wires ran in grooves milled in frame and barrel. The version for automatics had a sliding contact that made up when the slide was in battery.
Not being a YouTuber I will have to imagine, but a lot older guys are going to red dots to augment declining vision.
A friend who has gone all red dot says if his battery fails at the worst possible moment, he can frame the assailant in the window well enough for torso hits.

I'm 61, eyes aren't what they used to be, but I can still see my sights fine. Your friend believes he can frame an assailant in a dark house? Turning on lights makes him an easier target as well as illuminating the assailant.

My own personal belief is this- the best possible pistol for defense, is the one you are so acclimated to and comfortable with, that you can make hits on torso at reasonable distance by point-shooting. Sights are a nice supplement if you're looking at any distance, but should not be a distraction, should definitely not snag or illuminate you.
If there is enough light to positively identify your target, there is enough light to frame your assilant. It's the same reason night sights aren't as useful "in the dark" as many folks believe

If you look at modern sights on pistols factory equipped to host an RDS you’ll find they co-witness thereby being back up in case of failure. Win win.

I was working on a design that had a battery and LED in the grip of an autoloader that was switched on by turning off the safety.
The LED lined up with fiber optic lines that were clipped into grooves in the slide and fed light into the front and rear sights.
Battery life in a set-up like this would extend into decades, and battery or system failure would be unlikely to be a serious problem.
Also, using the light would be a positive indicator that the safety is off.
-Then I got out of weapons design and went into other fields.
