Gunny - what happened to the finish on those two revolvers in post #8 (#2 & #4)?
The Colt 1917 was like that when I bought it. It ain’t pretty, but it shoots good.
The Ruger was abused buy it’s previous owned. I bought it for $60. Here’s what it looked like when I got it. I’ve been thinking about sending it back to Ruger to have it refinished.

Just because there's a bottle in the photo doesn't mean one is mixing alcohol and firearms... I'm sure there's a few of us who may have an unloaded gun nearby to admire whilst indulging in a cocktail hour. Glad no one's objected to a tobacco product in the background (yet). A good cigar clearly belongs in a photo of a nice revolver...

And the rattler? Was that a one-shot kill, DR505? Very nice pic.

As far as props or backgrounds, absolutely they have a place in photographs of firearms. I myself only use a blank backdrop if I want people to see the detail on a firearm, but for those of us who believe that firearms can be art, or artistic... keep 'em coming.

The mountains work nicely in the meantime:
Where are the mountains? All I see are some hills... (Just funnin' -- my family in Arizona still calls them mountains, so when they come up here I show them actual mountains). But that is a great shot, JCooperfan.

.

The photo with which I took issue shows a bottle of Jim Beam, apparently opened and some is missing, apparently a shot or two taken from it. There is a rifle on the table, broken open to reveal a cartridge in the chamber.

This is a turn off to me, as I think it gives the wrong impression. Without a caption of explanation, no one knows just what has transpired. Again I say I believe such photos are in poor taste.

Just a little background on the picture I posted IN A PHOTO BACKDROP THREAD...:
That particular evening, my family was in quarantine because my wife had covid, and I also had symptoms. I decided togo back in the middle of our property and try to call in a coyote. The bottle was indeed for the cough that I had at the time. Its just as good as cough medicine in my opinion. I had posted earlier that the bottle was for my cough.
Do I drink? Yes. Do I drink in excess? No.

Some people are offended by this prop as well. 20210131_142238.jpg

Masonic emblems do not offend me. I'm not well versed enough on that organization to know really what it stands for. I do know it has come under a lot of criticism from some groups who oppose secret societies, but I've never known anyone who belonged who could explain it to me. So, I'm not offended.

OD: Yes, that was a single shot...I was aiming for its head but hit a bit back from there. You can see the snake is still moving. Normally I relocate snakes as they are a benefit to all, but this particular specimen was heading right for my 3 year old son who was kicking a soccer ball around the yard. I told my boy to stand behind our car that was behind me and cover up his ears. The no-dash Model 67 on my hip just happened to have some target wadcutters loaded IIRC. They worked just fine.

I usually just take pics of the guns, but sometimes I'll incorporate other props as well.

This was my Grandpa's revolver, holster, hat, and pouch he wore when re-enacting and demonstrating his 1841 mountain howitzer.

These are a few I did with an "ATF" theme
The "flowers" at the top right are tobacco roses made of rolled tobacco leaves. Not sure where they came from originally but my Grandma gave them to me.

About the ATF pics, I generally like them. To me, they are a pure representation of freedom and personal responsibility. In fact, @Armored farmer's pic with the single shot is one of my favorites. In the context of my own pics, I'm not drinking coffee and smoking a cigar while shooting. I'm sitting with the express intent of smoking a cigar and drinking coffee with a sixgun nearby. I used to do this with port and other alcoholic beverages but never got drunk while doing it.

I've used some different hides for backdrops. Most notably, the brown elephant I used for this gun's rig.

So when I photographed the rig, I used an oil tanned hide.

Phone cameras have gotten really good as of late. Most of mine from the last year were taken with an iPhone 8. The new 12 is even better.

My "CTF" pics don't normally turn out that great so I don't use them too often.

Here's an aged Slim Jim for the Single Six, one of a pair.

The "guns on books" motif is a good one. I should think of it more often. These are some of my most prized handgun volumes.

I love the color of that gun, and the way the blued screws contrast against it. What finish is it?
The gun is carbona blue. Due to the nature of the process, the steel has a sort of soft, brushed luster. It's more "blue" than modern hot salt bluing but still subtle. The pins and other small parts are nitre blue, which gives a nice contrast.
