Reminder: Knives are not prybars.

Whenever I read threads were people claim you need to spend $100 for some really thick full tang knife or blade made of designer steel, it always is because they are trying to use knives for things other than what they are designed for. If you use a knife to just cut things all you need is a basic $20-30 knife.

There’s way too many options to be limited to $30. I’ll pay more for made in USA.

I used to think that also.
But then at a blueberry festival in Maine, my then 3 year old boy found a filthy and abused Benchmade 550 in the grass.... it cleaned up real nice and I've been getting it filthy and abusing it ever since.
It's not a real high dollar knife, but it's a lot smoother and holds an edge a heckuvalot better than the chicom crap that I used to carry.

If you are just cutting things a $15 Mora or Opinel will do everything a Benchmade will.

A lot of folks will tell you that any folding knife is already broken!

One of my favorite working knives is the classic Camillus Electrician's Knife (originally a GI issue signalman's knife from the WWI era). Besides a big pen blade, it has a locking blade with a screwdriver tip and scraper on the edge. You can screw, scrape and pry with it!

As an Electrician, carried one for close to 30 years - actually it was several different ones as some got lost, worn out, or stolen.

I have one of those. It’s been all over the world in my seabag.


I don’t always buy high end knives because, I know that a cheap knife will do just about anything an expensive knife will do. But the cheap knives just don’t hold an edge as good and will not stand up to abuse.
But then just about everyone I know that has never had a high quality knife says that a cheap knife will do everything a good quality knife will do.
And if you’re going to cut yourself, do it with a good knife.

As a kid having a folding knife close on my finger taught me a valuable lesson about knife safety.

Made sure that never happened again. lol

No kidding - BTDT.

I still carry the scar on my right hand from showing another kid that I could sharpen a knife, on the school bus many, many years ago. That must have been the reason I traded the knife.

There has been many times I use my pocket knife as a pry bar, screw driver, ice pick, a metal awl, scribe or scraper & many other tools. A knife is a tool, it's fragile but if used gently it can for a short time be substituted for other tools. If it breaks well you needed to buy another anyway. LOL
I buy cheap knives because I know I will chip, break or damage it in some way. Many times I will buy two or three at a time. It's just a knife!
