Anybody seen the Kid??

The problem with most gunsmiths is that don't understand the open top single action. If you have found one keep them a secret so that they don't get over run with to much work to be able to keep up.

It's no secret. Gary Lee Barns. He's hoof hearted in this forum and several others. His website is cartridgeconversion.com.

Wow!! This "tinkerer" puts revolvers in your hands that win State championships (multiples!)!
Nope, didn't learn it overnight like others here would if they had the initiative to do so (apparently).
At a time when you're working 2 jobs and learning, I realize it's way easier for everyone else to quit one and take off with the other . . . happens all the time. I had to make sure and if it didn't work, I'm sure "care packages" would have piled up at the front door!!

Also, at a time when there's very few that even do this kind of "tinkering" , it can easily get out of hand and overwhelming . . . I wish they would have told me what the future would be (since they apparently know ).

I just find it amazing that all these folks that think this way started their careers knowing everything there is to know on day one . . . or the first month, or the first year , or even 5 years later !!!
"Specialists" are just that, they are interested in doing a specific job, to the best of their knowledge . . . at that time! If you know better, then tell them or go elsewhere! Some have and others ( most ) have stayed and had multiples done . . . they understand. Some though, just can't stand not slinging mud if they get a chance, which says a lot more about them. It used to bother me but not anymore. I've been fixing other "known" tinkerers" (even a well known "gunsmith" lol!!) work for a while but I don't crow about it, I don't call it out anybody can make a mistake (well most anyway).

So, if I have taught anybody any "tinkering" (you know who you are but I won't call you out!lol) and you want to step into the water, just be aware, bitterness can and will crop up when least expected . . . but if you love what you do, keep doing it.

Mike

PS. If you want to know something or how to do something, just ask. If I know, I'll tell ya . . . free of charge.

Mike I respect your integrity above all else. I've seen a few message board quarrels and you've handled them respectfully and with integrity. Your character is near impeccable and I admire that.
Reading over your old posts on slicking up these six shooters has taught me tons and I appreciate you brother.

May the Lord Bless you and keep you brother

Thank you

Mike I specifically called you a "craftsman" because I am well aware of the quality work you actually do, first hand. I wasn't enamored with your priorities or sense of focus, but that was in the earlier days of you offering your services. I'm sure things are better now. I did make the decision, though, to only send my guns to a licensed gunsmith that is well known for working on these revolvers we all love. I watched while others jumped into your area of expertise and started offering services as well. I'm not prophetic or anything, but I could see this coming. I hope the kid comes back and makes everything right, but he is not a certified gunsmith, with an actual business license to do these things. My way, I think, is less risky.

As I stated earlier in this thread. There are few "gun smiths" that can get these Italian clones to fit and operate as they were designed to!
Just because someone can afford a sign and a few business cards doesn't make them a gunsmith. I have seen work and heard stories that prove this.
This is a "niche hobby" with few gunsmiths that can or want to enter.
Then there is 45 Dragoon that can turn them into race guns if you want that option.

Thank you Blackpowderwarrior and 44 Dave! I appreciate your kindness and words. noelf2, thank for some clarification and the "craftsman" moniker. I have moved on over the last 5 years and now most all of my work centers around converting S.A. revolvers, Colt or Remington platform, to a coil spring action of my own development (specific to each platform) as well as an upgraded Ruger setup for 3 screw Rugers (which includes ROA's). As far as I know, I am alone in this area. I'm not aware of anyone doing this work but it seems to pay off rather well in the competition world. I'm "at home" finally and very satisfied with where I am now. You as well as many others helped me get to this stage and good or bad, it was part of my journey. I hope your '60 is still " the smoothest of all my revolvers. Modern or black powder". Of course I'm sure things have changed after all this time, as it should.

Mike

shhh, you're not supposed to let out the secret! (Gary has worked on 5 of my original Colt cap-and-ball revolvers this year, and one Euroarms Rogers & Spencer, so I don't want the 'secret' to get out until he finishes all my stuff!!!)

I don't mean to sound upset but "The Kid" told me he was done (and I paid him) with my 1861 over 6 months ago. No communication at all since then. Believe me I have tried. I really don't know how to proceed at this point.

“The Kid” sounds like he might be a little busy at this time. Life gets in the way, and patience is a virtue. From all reports his single action work is second to none. I need to contact him about sending over my Pietta 1860 for some tuning.

Hi Lyle, just moved to Benson area, southeast of Tucson.

Awesome! My good friend Gary is in Benson. He may have more BP guns and parts than most of us combined.

I'm in Corona de Tucson. I hang out a lot at Smoke Signals in Tombstone.....hope to see you there some time.

Upset? I'd be plain pissed. Nobody is so busy that they can't stop by a post office for a solid 6 months or at the very least send an email.
For me only acceptable excuse would be the gun tuner "has permanently left the building", is in a coma, or is incarcerated. Either way, you're out of a gun.

My gut tells me you are right. At this point, if I had a gun stuck in this limbo, I would be contacting the authorities where the Kid is currently living. Not sure there would be any recourse though. Email trails showing that there was an expectation of receiving a service and your property being returned might help, but for a $200 to $500 loss, I don't think there would be much hope. I took this same risk once, and all worked out well eventually. I hope it will for those still waiting on the kid as well.

I have spent somw time in remote Alaska. I can understand the delay. It's a different world where just staying alive is a challenge. A month to get a part would be quick in my book. No I have no dog in this, just my thoughts.
Keep your flits sharp

I have also spent time in remote Alaska (lived on an Aleutian Island) back when technology was way more challenging. I had no problem communicating with the mainland, and there was no such thing as email. You find a way, if you care to.

Sorry for the long delay...alaska is very very tough. Im on an island whos shipping is delayed and internet is intermittent in most parts. Those who still havent received their guns is because they arent done yet...mainly due to parts being being unavailable and getting them to an island that has contracted mail delivery (for instance, UPS is sent to private small float plane companies and then they deliver it when they get a chance). And when bad weather sets in...which it has been for weeks...the float planes cant fly and everything has to be barged/ferried. What im having to do to speed things up is have items that cant be shipped here directly is to have items shipped to family in Texas and then they ship to me via a faster route. I did not plan to move here with any guns to work...my trip was moved a whole month in advance last minute due to the job I signed up for told me its now or never and someone else would get the job. i only moved due to south texas being shut down by covid and my daughter needed therapy and schooling and this part of alaska was not having covid cases or school shut downs for special needs children. Its not an excuse but I want to let everyone know why im here. The best news I can give is that now with how im shipping things from texas to me is that i should be able to finish faster. I plan to have all parts and guns done within a few weeks and i will be giving partial refunds as I never really did this for profit, mainly to cover shipping expenses and buy more parts for those that needed them....as far as the parts...well I never charged extra for those so if your gun needed it you arent charged any extra. Some will be getting after market nipples as well if they fit your gun..i only have pietta sizes. I give you all my deepest apologies and please know this wasnt planned and im not trying to rob or steal anyones guns or make off with your money, I hope that my previous interactions with other forum members will reflect that this is a rare first time instance. These might also be the last guns I do unless its for previous customers or close friends I have met on the forums.

Thanks for the update Sergio. I do understand your situation and that life can get in the way sometimes. But you should at least send out emails advising your customers of the delays. Especially after you stated my gun was ready to be returned and it has been 6 months. A simple Email would of put me totally at ease. Regardless, you are in my prayers and thoughts, I am hoping the best for you and your family. God Bless Bro!
