Mossberg patriot in 30/06 Thoughts?

So as a lot of you know I shoot a supporter is Mosin-Nagant for most of my rifle shooting. Every time I bought it it was an expensive and a good way to shoot for cheap. I reload for it now and so it’s still fairly cheap. However I’m starting to think it would be prudent if I got myself a domestic caliber.

The Walmart around the corner from me has a Mossberg patriot in 30/06 For less than $400. I’m familiar with a wooden stock patriot because my ex girlfriend had one in .243. It seemed like it was accurate enough for hunting wave. Is anyone familiar with the synthetic stock 30 caliber version?

Obviously I would want to upgrade the factory scope when I got a chance.
 
I can’t speak for the mossberg patriot because I have never owned one, however i can tell you by experience with the 30-06, that it will kill anything you shoot it with. Bullets range from 110-220gr with 150-180 being the most popular. Great round, im sure mossberg makes good rifle too.
 
Not a fan of the Mossberg design, but it's worth $400. Anymore gun prices are crazy.

The 30-06 has a long history, but is really much more cartridge than most people need. Recoil from a rifle as light as the Mossberg is going to be stout.

Not saying "don't buy it", just be aware that it is going to get your attention when you pull the trigger. The trend in newer rifles like the Mossberg is toward lighter, more compact rifles. I just think they work better when chambered in the short action cartridges that generate less recoil.

I have a Patriot, walnut stock though, in 270 Winchester and it will shoot one ragged hole at 25 yards with factory 150gr hunting ammo(It will start to hurt after a box or so, especially if you are wearing a thin t-shirt). I used the factory Vortex 3-9x40 for a few months, then last fall I found a deal on a Vortex Viper HS 6-24x50 with a 4in sunshade and it is sweet and kinda funny seeing a sniper scope on a hunting rifle lol. I got my 30-06 fix from my newly purchased CMP M1 Garand and about 1100 rounds of various types of ammo lol. And I have almost 600 rounds of 270 ammo lol.
 
My nephew has one in 6.5 Creedmoor and it seems like a decent hunting rifle for the money. 30-06 isn't sexy anymore but as a one gun hunting caliber it's pretty tough to beat if you're wanting something that can swing up to elk or moose size game. In that role I'd probably take a 30-06 or 7 Rem Mag if you want one rifle to cover all your bases.
 
Handled and shot a few of the synthetics. They are solid rifles, a touch above your average budget fair.
If your recoil sensitive the low weight maybe an issue in something with as much recoil as a .30-06 (doubt it, since the x54s no slouch), but other than that (and possibly getting a lemon) i think youll be quite happy with the performance of the Patriot.

Nothing wrong with the 7mm RemMag, but the 30US will cover all bases, and again, load it down to .30WCF levels, or anything in between.

Dang! I think the .30-06 is the most sexy of them all! :what:But perhaps more in a Dorothy Lamour way.

Not long ago the 30-06 was the round to have and all others were compared to it. Now days the newer than the next guy lighter calibers are fashionable. I have gone to the 7-08 due to my age and recoil. But the 30-06 is still the king of North American cartridges and has been for 100 years or more.
 
So, great cartridge with some versatility but not a very different cartridge from the 7.62x54R that you have; a consideration. I have a syntheticPatriot in 375 Ruger and it is I must say, unpleasantly light. I have a friend with one in 243 Win and it is much more pleasant indeed. For a carry rifle, it’s pretty great. Look and feel of the plastic furniture is quite cheap, however, the barrel is fully floated and while the plastic looks cheap, it is rigid and does what it needs to do. Magazine is again cheesey plastic but slips in and out well and locks in solid.

The gray/silver cerakote looks good and I find the design of the action elegant in its simplicity. Safety lever is a bit gritty. Trigger is better than I would have expected on a rifle at this price but the Interweb reports that this varies.

I find it a good all-weather hunting rifle for the money. It’s not a target rifle and I wouldn’t recommend it for a long day of range shooting.

Mine has a factory set 2.5lb trigger that goes off if you sneeze near it lol! :rofl: It's awesome for showing you how much trigger follow through matters... Like by the time I can feel the trigger move, it's gone BANG and there's a hole in the target. It almost catches you off guard.

I think 165gr 30-06 is the best weight for the cartridge as you can send moderate weight bullets at pretty good velocity for long range hurt on game and dead trees shredded, pressed, and glued into a white, thin, rectangle shapes lol. I've loaded up some 165gr Hornady BTSP 30-06 that I need to Chrono and test out for accuracy. I used AA2700 and I always use Magnum primers as they are more consistent in cold weather and help ignite powders such as Win760. 2700 and 760 are close in burn rate but are not to be interchanged with out checking your load data carefully as they do have a grain or two or three difference sometimes.

I've shot a few things with that bullet. Picture book perfect mushroom expansion every time.
 
The Patriot is a solid gun, but has just about the worst recoil of any 30-06 I've shot. With that said, I just put a muzzle brake on my Howa 30-06 and it really tamed down the recoil. If were to buy a Patriot in 30-06, I'd definitely think about having it threaded for a brake. About $100 for the M4-72 brake , $75 for gunsmith to thread the barrel to 1/2 x 28, and $50 worth of shims and 5/8 thread adapter.

That might be putting lipstick on a pig if you consider that you could probably buy a Savage or Ruger with a threaded barrel for close to the same money.
Unless you really like the Mossberg, or you are absolutely limited by budget, you might want to look at the similar offerings from Savage and Ruger before you decide. There are also quite a few T,/C Compass and Ventures still available that might be less than $400 new.

The venture and compass rifles are viable options too, al.ost pulled the trigger on a compass at dicks sporting goods, don't like that chain for various reasons, but it had a price tag of 349.00 threaded muzzle with protector cap on it.

For cheap shooting I use 223, 556 real cheap to shoot, get lots of practice on mechanics before going to my heavier center fire rifles. The patriot rifles aren't bad at all, I prefer other brands, but would buy one if the price was right.

Looking for a 98 mauser action to do a semi custom build so my dollars are tagged for that project right now

I shoot the x54 with a short barrel and no butt pad.
