.22 Short for self defense?

dodo bird: "The millennials are still trying to figure out what a “phone book” is."

I keep getting phone books with white and yellow pages from the company that had my late wife's home office account for landline, internet, dish TV.
The contract is long gone.
The phone books keep coming.
The last one was February 2021.
I feel like Winston Smith in "1984", holding the photograph of Jones, Aaronson, and Rutherford, evidence of a past consigned to the Memory Hole.
Should I keep the phone books as evidence of a past the future won't understand, or should I just go ahead and use them for bullet penetration tests?

The key thing to know about phone books is that they can make a great bullet stopper. You just need to know how many of them to tape together for a given cartridge.

I can't remember the last time I used a phone book to look up a phone number. Probably the last time I used a pay phone.

When in high school 60 years ago, I shot a standard velocity .22 lr through the Austin phone book one evening while my parents were out at Bingo. It penetrated all the way through and left a 1/4” deep hole in my bedroom baseboard where the book was propped against. IIRC correctly, that phone book was at least 2” thick then.
Pretty darn loud.
It was fired through my Ruger Single Six that I had bought new two years before. Still have it too, along with the tinnitus.

I’m gonna say shoot them.

22 short is useless for self defense. I used to use it for dispatching trapped animals quietly without hearing protection. it failed to kill some critters with a headshot so I went to plain old bulk 22 and never had another issue. Also a friend of mine shot himself in the foot wearing Justin cowboy boots and the boot was still waterproof....ive also seen stew cans get dented but not Penetrated.

Generally in these threads the answer is "better than a rock, or stick". But if the assailant is wearing good eye protection i believe id take my chances with a large rock or stick in the case of the 22 short.

As far as phone book they absolutely stop a bullet. A short won't make it inside. Even 5.56 and 5.45 LAP won't go far on a yellow pages. I used to use them a lot.

I’m very familiar with how to point, cock, and pull the trigger on my NAA if there’s a thug bent on causing me harm. I am not so sure about my ability to draw, deploy, and effectively use a knife in the same circumstances. I’ve never been in a knife fight and although I’m sure that a 6” blade is probably much more potentially lethal than a .22 short…. Sam Colt’s equalizer still works to a point. You can shoot someone without being an accomplished martial artist. And I’m willing to bet that a thug with some street experience is probably going to be better in a physical altercation than I am, even though I’m not particularly old or out of shape.

That is far from being able to use it effectively in a self defense encounter,

I am not so sure about my ability to draw, deploy, and effectively use a knife in the same circumstances.
Most people are in the same boat, though they may not recognize that.

I’m sure that a 6” blade is probably much more potentially lethal than a .22 short
Lethality and defensive effectiveness may be two entirely different things.

Mosin and Klean both make good points on .22 Short and knives. A knife could be effective for self defense if the person using it knew what he was doing and did knife training classes, but a .22 Short that someone has more time and experience with could be more effective with it, especially if there were multiple threats involved.

Isn't there a story about a S. African using an NAA to fight off 3 armed robbers, killing two of them? Yeah, with .22 Mag, but .22 Short could have possibly been effective, whatever the case it demonstrates that a little NAA mini is capable of engaging multiple simultaneous threats.

I'm not fictional movie character who can slice and dice his/her way thru countless enemies. I'll take .22 Short over a knife simply because you can't beat reach.

Although a NAA revolver was enough to motivate protestors here to keep moving (regardless of caliber), I still think it's a terrible choice.

This is from a few months ago in Louisville KY.

Protestors aren't exactly determined attackers, LOL. Of course, that is one of those cases where a fake gun or unloaded gun would have been just as 'effective' given that there was no shooting.

"Those cases" make up more than 99 percent of the over one million defensive uses of firearms that take place in the US every year. Still, someone who carries a firearm should always load up for "the one."

If you actually watch the video of Grandpa Pug, you see one demonstrator racking a round into an AR pattern rifle when he started waving the pug. If they truly wanted to deal with him, he was in serious trouble. The demonstrators weren't interested in taking him down. His wife dragged him inside, probably to his benefit. Same with the St. Louis lawyers, the crowd was just passing by when crap useless gun wife postured. They had quite a few rifles and if really interested, they were dead right there. Posturing with guns is not a good idea.

Kyle Rittenhouse's pursuers were not deterred. In fact, there is a reasonable case to be made that the gun encouraged them to go after him.

She was actually trying to get her fellow protestors to move on, making her one of the level-headed ones.
Well, I have not seen any video, just the still picture.
Seems to me that management should request these protest interlopers to leave the restaurant premises, and call the cops to arrest them for trespass if they refuse.

I bashed this thread awhile back....so I'm going to come back with some positives...

CCI 22 CB caps 29 grain chrono'd in the 400s fps
Remington 22 Shorts 29 grain............in the 800 fps
Remington 22 LR 40 grain......in the 800 fps
22 Magnums 40 grain in the 1,100s

I like the variety of ammo choices with this gun, including the bird shot. With its small size, it might find its way into a pocket or a suitcase, when another option just might not... hot summer days where clothing is minimum, and advertising/printing isn't desired. These situations are very few and far between for me.
It's extremely portable, and has ammo options to have some versatility.

Interesting velocity numbers. Thanks for posting those.

Did you shoot them all from the gun pictured (using a .22LR cylinder swap?)

I had this long reply with stats and etc all written out, to show that if you pull the trigger twice, and you put the shots in the right place, a .22 can be effective

I deleted it. Figured it has all been hashed out before and people already have their minds made up.

Why would you carry a .22? In my opinion, better than nothing is a legitimate reason for some people.

There have been times in my 60+ years that I found myself in possession of nothing more than a piece of bike chain, a pocket knife, .22 LR single action, a single shot shotgun, a big stick, etc, I have made due with what I had available because events or circumstances dictated that was what I had to do. I am sure a lot of you have also.

While I currently have more than those things to protect myself or my family, I have recently carried an LCR in .22 mag because of circumstances. I felt what I had was better than nothing.

Same with a .380 vs 9mm, .38 vs .357, 45 Colt vs .45 ACP or 44 mag, revolver vs semi-auto, sometimes your circumstances dictate what you do, and sometimes we compromise either by choice or need.

My dad "needed" some security, circumstances prevented him from having a firearm, so, I bought him a Mace Pistol and he keeps it with him now. He has not had to use it, but he has it and feels it is better than nothing

Sometimes we do what we have to do. If you have the need to carry a .22 short for whatever reason you have, then you do what you have to do, it would not be my first choice, but, there are many things I would choose it above.

I am pretty sure it will be better than nothing.
