How many guns should one person own?

Freedom is dangerous.

A person should be able to own any amount of guns they want.

I hunt for a living, so I use a gun for every occasion. I also practice self defense, so I dont call a guy with a gun to save me, when theres a gun problem.

1shotgun, 12 gauge. + 1 .22lr + 1 30-06 + 1 handgun for self defense, + whatever you want and can afford, because we are free people.

A gunheap is not more or less dangerous than 1 gun, because you can only use one gun at a time.

I think people should be allowed to keep their issue weapon after service, because they are vetted and trained by the military.

Well, unless you are Master Chief and can dual-wield.......:D

Seriously, though, I had a coworker who seemed shocked when he saw on the news that the cops had raided a "compound" where they found "tens of thousands" of rounds of ammunition. He mumbled that no one should be allowed to own that much ammo. I responded that the only dangerous ammunition is the couple hundred rounds one person carry at a time- the rest isn't hurting anybody sitting on pallets in the basement.

Gave him something to think about, anyway.

I think it’s a more complicated equation. If Y = the right number and X = what you have, then it’s more like Y = X - 2 + 1 + “oh I saw that Z on THR got/showed off one of those” + “maybe I need a second one as a spare” + “I have no use for that now, but maybe one day…” + 4.

I think minimum of 2, with no maximum. Personally I don't want so many they become a burden or impersonal. I want to know my guns inside and out, and not just look over the heap.

I agree with all the above, especially the last sentence. But since I couldn't do that........

I did the next best thing. I had atomic engineering put my issue rifle's serial number on an 80% receiver. They do Hydra-Matics also, with any serial number you want. Still working on the rest of the M161A1. Might be a slow build.

I have more than I need, but not as many as I want!!!!
The question is not about need which 4 will cover that very well. 1-centerfire rifle, 1-shotgun, 1-22lr, 1-handgun.

5) Of course a muzzleloader is needed to extend hunting season in many states.
6) A woods rifle is useful like a lever action.
7) A Long range rifle for target shooting.
8) A carry handgun for backup.
9) A 22lr handgun.
10) A pocket shotgun like a Bond Arms Rowdy or Judge

Ok the correct answer is as many as you want to fill your needs. I have several tools in my toolbox and firearms are tools .

How many guns should one person own?

What a question, but allow me to frame it differently. How many fishing poles should a fisherman own. I can tell you this, it varies widely. When I used to fish offshore and enjoyed coastal fishing near daily. I needed a bait rod, or a couple of those which were cheap breakables. But quality light-weight rods are also wonderful for small fighting fish such as Bonefish. I also of course needed my Snook rod. I then needed my Tarpon rod. Of course I also needed a Barracuda rod configured with a treble hook and weighted lead sinker to foul hook those 40 lb brutish torpedos. Then there were the Snapper rods and or a couple Grouper rods. Also a Shark rod or at least a couple big gun 9/0 stand-up rods. Least we not forget at least 4 Shimano TLD50's for trolling tuna and dolphin, a few live bait pitch rods, etc.... etc... and etc... I had a good friend who had a spare bedroom that had to contain 50 to 75 different fishing rods because he liked variety in a hobby he had been engaged in for a lifetime. On and on I could go. What I found made a great fisherman was being prepared with rigged rods ready to go for all types of situations and circumstances. I once ended up into a school of marauding ocean going Crevalle jack's. If anyone has ever experienced what that is like, they'll agree it's exciting. Everyone fishing there that day ended up hooked to a Crevalle jack. Nearly no one landed theirs because they were unprepared. I of course fought and landed mine because I had a goto rod rigged and ready with the proper jig and the proper wire leader. Is firearm ownership somehow different? A law enforcement officer never asked me what do you need all those fishing rods for.

I am of the opinion that if you are allowed to own a tool there should be no limitation on the amount of tools you are allowed to own.

Recently, as in yesterday there has been widespread comments on the internet and social media regarding the Memphis shooting of an individual named "Young Dolph" the comments circulating widely are that open carry laws have been passed as a means of genocide against a one demographic vs the other. Cleary one in the hand of a callous criminal is one to many. However laws are never obeyed by the lawless.

Guns are dangerous and need to be stored securely , or, be under direct control of responsible individual. The formula SWMBO (she who must be obeyed) has come up with is all that will fit in a gun safe. Then you buy a new safe when you are at capacity. Repeat the process. We are now at stage 3 ( third gun safe) . She has been looking various gun safes again. I know what comes after that. I just hope it is a rim fire , or, something we have dies and brass for.

The question pertains to my collection of hammers, I have a lot, each one for a different purpose and get used for what they were meant for.
As long as they’re kept safe and used properly, the number I have is irrelevant.

After I acquired a wife, "we" acquired a lot of kitchen stuff- the stuff I had previously (not much/just the right amount), the stuff she already had, and the stuff that continues to pile up, replicate, clone itself, or whatever is happening in there. There's a good amount of it that I have no idea what it even does, and there are cabinets in the kitchen I don't think I have ever opened. I have no idea why we have more frying pans than stove burners, but she insists that she knows what she is doing, so I just let it be. Since I pointed this out, she doesn't question my firearms inventory.

The word "should" implies that there can be a limit.

There is no valid limitation of the number of guns I can own. (Yes, the various levels of government may restrict the types and bore-size of guns I am "allowed" to legally own, but they cannot limit the number of guns I own, or desire to own).
