Do you really need another 9mm striker-fired pistol if you have a Sig P320?

Or if you have a S&W 642 do you need another J frame?

How about if there’s a 9mm Beretta 92FX, Walther P1, and a Sig 210A in the safe, do you need another full-size 9?

For carry, how many more pistols are necessary after a Sig 250 subcompact, Beretta PX4compact, S&W 3914, 6906, CS9, and Shield EZ in 9mm?

Or, for bigger bullet carry, say in 40 & 45, do you need another if there’s a CS45, 4513, and .40 SW99 subcompact handy to conceal?

After a Smith 28-2 how many more .357s are necessary? (Okay, I confess to a Dan Wesson/HiStandard MarkII as well)?

Or in 38 special, is a S&W 15-2 and WWII Victory enough (my eldest made off with my Model 10)?

If you have a Smith 625, any more .45 wheel guns on the I-want list? (Another confession: a 1917 Colt .45 is in the safe. It just sorta appeared.)

And for personal protection is a .44 mag really needed if there’s a .357 (or two) handy?

(In smaller calibers, is a Beretta .32acp M81 Cheetah and a PP clone; .380 EZ and Beretta 85F; and 38S&W Terrier and .38/200 BSR enough?)

Oh, and for .22, a Ruger MK IV and Sig conversion for my P220 in .45 seems to be more than enough. No?

Okay, my dilemma is that the frugal good sense inculcated by my Depression-era parents is now getting in the way of my gun buying mania. I can’t see adding something that essentially duplicates a good gun I already own. (I ain’t buying an FEG when I already have a Browning HP.)

Full disclosure: I got hooked on Smith and Wesson 1st – 3rd Gen pistols and have a whole bunch of them in 9, 40, and 45, so I’m no stranger to “collecting” and having them not necessarily for practical use but for my own satisfaction.

But every time I think it would be neat to own a CZ75, or PPQ, or SD9VE or Ruger 345 or SAR B6, or Daewoo DP51, or Sig P2022, or…well, you get the idea. I keep saying, “I’ve got a perfectly fine Sig 320, what on earth do I need a Glock for? Or a .40 Beretta/HK/Ruger would be neat, but it’s pretty much the same as the S&W4006TSW CHP in my bedside night table.

This ramble is apropos of nothing, but I just spent an hour pouring over gunbroker and couldn’t find anything I wanted that was priced reasonably. (And yeah, sure, I want a Smith 4506, but spending $1,200++ is out of my budget now that I hang out at the mail box waiting for my social security check. (Actually, it’s direct deposit.)

So I know “it’s only money,” “there’s no pockets in a shroud,” and “It’s my hobby and sort of an investment” are all good rationalizations. But so far, not enough for me to hit the bid button on gunbroker.

If ya got this far, thanks for sticking with it; hope you don’t feel it was a waste time.

Redcoat3340:

Are you married?

In “How many guns should one person own?”, the marriage Factor among ‘male gun owners’ can resemble the missing Dark Energy/Matter of the Universe: it is difficult to measure, but it permeates everything married men do with implacable stubbornness and very crafty subtlety..

“They” even notice how many beers we drink, at home.
Only an alien life form which migrated from a different planet can perceive, take note of, and remember so many inconsequential activities- and mistakes made by the inferior sex.

The more often you sell or trade a gun for another, the more difficult it is for our
“Leopard Women From Venus” :)to keep focused on their insatiable desire to keep track of everything.

Every shooter should master the Glock 22/35/41/23/19/17/34. Whether you like them or not.

Nope. 642 is fine.

Yes. A CZ Shadow2, CZ Ts2, and Glock 34.

Glock 19.3, Glock 23.4, Dan Wesson Vigil Commander .45 or Specialist Commander.

Same answer as previous question.

Nope. No more .357's are needed.

Nope. Good to go.

No. I've always wanted a Colt SAA, but it's 100% useless. Unless your a nostalgic guy with hundreds of acres, and horses.

Heck no, work on your autoloader game. You've got revolvers down.

More than enough micro compacts.

Sold my 22's. A suppressed 22 might be handy. Recoil is part of pistol training. I never train with anything weaker than 9mm now.

With minor work, and attention to detail, the Glock is the finest fighting pistol ever made. Add Warren Tac sights, smooth G35 trigger with flush cut, undercut the trigger guard, 3.5 OEM connector with a custom tuned striker spring and some polish, and my Glock sets the bar for all of my other defensive pistols. Including my custom expensive 1911's.

The CZ's are mostly excellent competition guns. I haven't really had much luck with the CZ75b, at least compared to a carry oriented Glock or 1911. A skinny 75 built similar to a Shadow 2 would be a fun project.

Well I dont need most of what I have, but I enjoy shooting some and collecting others. As long as I enjoy it, I'll continue with it. Like you, I have some similar models that are slightly different, but if well taken care of, its just like money in the bank.

Believe you me, I can come up with a need for any gun I have or want. Found that out when my wife asked why I have so many, and I was able to justify every single one. Mind you, some of them were a bit of a stretch, but I was pretty proud of myself. When it came down the the last one I bought (243 Savage Axis), the need was that I needed to buy because it cost me $4 post rebate. :D Hard to argue the fact that it cost me about the same as a gallon of gas

I believe you. I too can "come up with" a need for any gun I want, or already have.;)
My (our) problem is, my wife is almost as good at coming up with a "need" for a gun she wants as I am. And seeing as how we've been married for 50 years, and lived in this same house for 42 years, we're out of room.
At our ages, we're not about to buy a bigger house and move just so we could buy more guns either. In fact, the very reason we can afford more guns is because we've never done silly things like that.:D

The more you own-

the more you support the US economy,
whether the seller is a retail business or a private owner.

Even imported guns require American workers to process them ‘etc ;)‘.

Need? I can only surmise the question of 'need' when placed in a specific context. For instance, "How many guns does one need to hunt North American game?" I'm not going to outline this list, but it is a finite list. Seeing your avatar and your screen name, I suspect you either live in the U. K. or have immigrated from there. A list of guns for hunting the game of Britannia would I think be smaller, as Britannia does not have the larger, most dangerous game of the far North. (Kodiak or Polar bears, for example.) The possibilities go on.
One should note such a list would be the minimum number of arms to properly hunt the assortment of critters or perform the task. It would by no means be a maximum.

For a collection of "specific purpose" arms, the list is much larger. For instance, "Military Arms of Thailand". There is likely a finite list of such. However, one can restrict the collection to muzzle loading arms, cartridge arms, semi-automatic arms or other; include handguns and long guns or concentrate on one type only. In any event, the list, though finite, can be stretched by finding an example of one same already possessed, but the recent find is in much better shape.

As has been pointed out, the 'need' requirement is moot in the U. S. In some nations, limited to a fixed number of arms, one must be much more discerning, or just picky, about what to have.
