Hi guys,

I'm building an AR15 and was hoping to go with more vintage-looking A2 setup, with the most important features being the classic A2 front sight paired with an A2 carrying handle.

However, this particular build is going to require an adjustable gas block. I've built/assembled a couple of free-float configuration uppers, and found that process to be fairly straightforward, and easy to accommodate almost any gas block because it just hides under the handguard/rail. I am not very familiar with the A2 front sight block, delta rings, drop in handguard, etc. configuration, although from the videos I've watched it seems a little more complicated overall than the free-float configuration.

I did some Googling and did manage to find this product which would appear to make things a lot easier because the adjustable gas block is integrated to the A2 sight. However, I have a few problems with that sight:
(1) It's pricey with most retailers pricing at $130-40 not including tax or shipping.
(2) It doesn't have a place to mount a sling swivel.
(3) I can't tell if the sight post itself is removeable/interchangeable, which interests me.
(4) I don't know how well it functions as an adjustable gas block; to my knowledge not all AGBs are created equal and I'm naturally skeptical of this hybrid-style product.

So I guess my question is whether it is possible to build an A2 style upper with a non-integrated adjustable gas block? Essentially my A2 front sight would have to be of the clamp-on/set screw variety/functioning as a sight only, and the actual gas block would be separate, and would inevitably have to protrude out (along with a small portion of the gas tube) in front of the handguard. I realize this might look a little goofy, but am not super concerned about it.

Does anyone have any experience building this type of setup? Or if you know of or have experience with any product(s) that could allow me to come close to this type of a vintage A2 style setup in a free float configuration?

I welcome any pictures, suggestions, etc.

I guess my question would be...
Why do you want an adjustable gas block on an AR15?

I plan to use a special binary style trigger that's going to require some tuning and tinkering to operate correctly, and I don't really want to assemble the upper twice if a standard gas block doesn't work out.

The JP A2 style AGB is good to go. Very good product.

Yes, the JP A2 FSB uses the same adjustable front sight option as a standard A2. Note, it does need a short rear sight, it’s not an F type sight.

No, the JP A2 FSB AGB does not have a mount for a sling, but alternatively, you should look into an A2 style free float tube, which has the end cap and sling swivel on the end of the tube, such the barrel is truly free floating. Same look, same feel, less disadvantage.

I would think you would want to do a clamp on front sight. I did that with an a2 type pistol I built a few years back. Gas block was under a short FF handguard but same principle would apply under clamshells. You would need to dimple the barrel for set screws though as the spring tension on the clamshells combined with recoils would undoubtedly cause movement over time. I might even be tempted to mill a tiny flat there and then use locktite to help hold it tight once it was in place.

How about a railed gas block with A2 style detachable sight mounted to it?

Or get out the grinder and welder and make your own? Cut up a FSB and weld it to an AGB.

I was this close >< to buying that A2 style free float tube but went with wood drop ins instead. It is still on my radar.

A2 FSBs can be drilled and tapped for gas system adjustment, FYI. I did exactly that on my .308 AR post sample, won't run full auto suppressed with wide open gas.

That’s all we used to be able to do - it really wasn’t so many years ago that adjustable gas blocks were almost exclusively custom gunsmithing endeavors. I recall drilling and tapping a lot of blocks in my early days of building custom AR’s - and frankly, I’d probably have a lot more money in my pocket still if I never started buying AGB’s once they became readily available and kept D&T’ing my own.
