Hi guys,
I'm building an AR15 and was hoping to go with more vintage-looking A2 setup, with the most important features being the classic A2 front sight paired with an A2 carrying handle.
However, this particular build is going to require an adjustable gas block. I've built/assembled a couple of free-float configuration uppers, and found that process to be fairly straightforward, and easy to accommodate almost any gas block because it just hides under the handguard/rail. I am not very familiar with the A2 front sight block, delta rings, drop in handguard, etc. configuration, although from the videos I've watched it seems a little more complicated overall than the free-float configuration.
I did some Googling and did manage to find this product which would appear to make things a lot easier because the adjustable gas block is integrated to the A2 sight. However, I have a few problems with that sight:
(1) It's pricey with most retailers pricing at $130-40 not including tax or shipping.
(2) It doesn't have a place to mount a sling swivel.
(3) I can't tell if the sight post itself is removeable/interchangeable, which interests me.
(4) I don't know how well it functions as an adjustable gas block; to my knowledge not all AGBs are created equal and I'm naturally skeptical of this hybrid-style product.
So I guess my question is whether it is possible to build an A2 style upper with a non-integrated adjustable gas block? Essentially my A2 front sight would have to be of the clamp-on/set screw variety/functioning as a sight only, and the actual gas block would be separate, and would inevitably have to protrude out (along with a small portion of the gas tube) in front of the handguard. I realize this might look a little goofy, but am not super concerned about it.
Does anyone have any experience building this type of setup? Or if you know of or have experience with any product(s) that could allow me to come close to this type of a vintage A2 style setup in a free float configuration?
I welcome any pictures, suggestions, etc.
