Shoot it and value drops

I inherited my passed Father-in-Law's Viet Nam bringback French MAC pistol (made in 1952), complete with the paperwork for the bringback. I DID shoot it twice. The first time after a careful inspection, cleaning, and lubrication to assure proper function. The second time to share the experience with my friends. And that's it for shooting. They are so rare in the U.S. that if I break a part it would cost hundreds to fix. A nephew of mine from my FIL's side of the family will likely inherit it. Other than that one exception, I shoot my guns...

My neighbor has a friend who makes over $250k a year and obsesses over their transferable Thompson appreciating in value over the course of being unfired for twenty years. The dude has a 3,000-acre ranch in Colorado and owns a bunch of small companies.

I'm amazed that he makes so much money, because he seems to lack commom sense or basic financial acumen. Then again, you'd think doctors have to be smart too, but look at the 600K people who die yearly from medical malpractice.

Disagree. To a collector, the enjoyment is simply having it. I have so many guns I could never shoot them all anyway.

Then I disagree with collectors. I am a shooter and have worked for decades to require the skill to justify my purchases - and I do not mean financially. Buying a gun for the accuracy potential and not being able to use it is like buying a steak and having no teeth.

I have three NIB Ruger 50th Anniversary revolvers. A flattop .44mag, a flattop .357mag, and a .22/.22mag.
I intend to shoot them some day, that day just hasn’t arrived yet. Everything else has been shot. My SAA .45 is honestly the most pleasurable revolver I’ve ever shot. It’s 1956 vintage and is like handling a fine mechanical watch.

Know a guy who bought HK VP 9 as his first gun and threats it as a collectible - trying not to have a single scratch while being handled by him and others - super annoying guy

I don't know if your acquaintance is all that annoying insomuch as he maybe is misinformed as to the collectability of yet another polymer framed/striker fired pistol, even one as nicely designed as the VP9, and made by HK!
