Magnum Research SSP-91 anyone?

It’s pretty unique. I have a couple contenders but I’ve always felt like a contender is a target pistol that is a bit out of place hunting. I didn’t like dragging mine around in the woods and getting it wet, and a contender feels kind of unwieldy and front heavy shooting it any other way than rested front and rear. The balance on this and much shorter length make this more stable to shoot in field position even though the trigger is not great. This feels like a purpose built hunting pistol.

35 Remington is the issue , not the gun.

Set shoulder in die set better. Because your primer is is probably flush in the pocket.

Happened to my Xp100 and contender until I figured it out

If your shooting factory ammo… Get a extended firing pin.

I know. I have a stash of softer primers that I switched to which solved the issue until I get them all fire formed. After they are all fire formed I will shim the sizing die till I get the setback I want.

What is he trying to get out of it?

I cannot remember but it seemed like 700-800. Also, it might be a Lone Eagle as opposed to an SSP-91. I don’t know if there is a practical difference or not.

I’ll be seeing him again next Saturday so I will ask. As of two weeks ago he was still trying to sell it. He doesn’t have it listed anywhere it’s just word of mouth. He not wishy washy about it but he has been trying to sell it for over a year now.

When you don’t list something like that online your not going to get too many interested parties.

Seems like you got it figured out

Ps,Xtps shot decent in my xp100

It’s too bad Remington doesn’t make the 150 gr psp core-lokt .35 Remington load anymore, that would be perfect in your pistol.

I bought 3 boxes of those rounds several years ago and single-loaded them in my 336. Man did they shoot great, I would get literal 3-shot cloverleaf groups at 100 yds (The rifle is scoped.) When I fired the last rounds from the final box I went back to Bass Pro for more…and learned they were discontinued. :(

Have you shot the Leverevolution 200 gr FTX load? I bought a few boxes, in my 336 they’re good, but not as accurate as the old C-L 150’s were.

Stay safe.

I have one (Lone Eagle) in .44 mag that is real fun. Easier to shot than the Contender pistol in .44 mag. After firing, point the barrel down and rotate the breech to pop the empty brass up about 10”. It brings a smile to my face, like when the en-bloc pops out of a Garand!

A buddy had one in 7mm-08 that was very accurate, and not so bad to shoot.

I handload only but no plans to buy the FTX bullet, kinda pricy. I think I’ll stick to the round nose bullet since I’m unlikely to use it at more than 100 yards. I do shoot the 180gr speer in my other guns and like that bullet a lot.

I have loaded the 180 gr Speer as well, it’s a good bullet .

Stay safe.

You said the "trigger is not great," is it just heavy? Is it a single or two stage?

It is pretty heavy for a specialty pistol and before I worked on it it also had some take-up and creep. I actually want it to be a little heavy being that I intend this to be a dedicated hunting pistol, but I wouldn't mind if I could get it another pound or two lighter. I would say its probably 4 or 5 lbs. I think about 3 lbs would be about what I would like in a hunting pistol. I have a sear grinding setup so I might work on the angles some more and see if I can get it down safely but I am hesitant to go too far on this since replacement parts are nonexistent. Its not bad as it is, but it definitely takes some concentration to shoot it accurately.
